Network Maintenance And PS3 Firmware 2.40 Unrelated

Earlier today, we contemplated the possibility that the network maintenance might have something to do with the impending in-game XMB and trophies. Sony was bringing down both the PlayStation Network and Store today between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. PT (which means they're still down), and of course, the idea that this might be firmware update 2.40 coming earlier than anticipated spread across the Internet.

Unfortunately, and as expected, Sony has responded to this rumor: over at the official European PlayStation Community forums, a SCEE employee has confirmed that this maintenance is just that - maintenance - and it has nothing to do with the firmware 2.40 update.

"The PLAYSTATION Network will be offline for 5 hours today from 3pm BST (4pm CEST) for maintenance work. It's pretty much all behind-the-scenes work and is, most definitely, not the 2.4 System Software update. Sorry, you need to wait a little longer for that one!"

It's highly unlikely that the US or Japan will get something different with this maintenance process, so everyone is just going to have to wait for that in-game XMB and trophy support. The latest evidence points towards early next month, although Sony has yet to provide an official release date. We'll keep you updated.

Sony needs to stop leaving us in the dark when it comes to the updates. If they are trying to cause some suspense thats stupid its just an update not a game.

For all I care they didn't leave us in the dark... We just assumed it would be for the firmware update, and they have confirmed it's not... No harm or fault done by Sony.

I don't thinks sony is tryin to build suspense, I take as they don't want to put out a date and have to rush it to bring it out on the promise they gave us. Or have some unexpected delay happen to push the date back.

Ok like they've said, anything anyone else says BESIDES SONY, is all just speculation and rumor. Until THEY CONFIRM such things that you are expecting to be something they have NEVER said it was...how about just chilling out and stop accusing them. @ Papaduke. i agree. I dont mean they need to give us a date for the 2.4 update but if they are doing something to the network they coudle easily post on their blog what they are actually doing with it..rather then just leaving us guessing.

@ Tatsujin..Maintenance...yeah thats a pretty wide cloud to cover..id prefer them to be more specific...is it to help certain games to run faster??is it to make the Network more reliable??Is it the groundwork for trophies and In Game XMB??...nope..its just maintenance..and by the way..theres plenty of words in the english dictionary that you dont need to curse...it just shows the flaws in your character.

Dude a Maintenance is just a regular... maintanence... MMORPGs have this on a regular weekly bases... I guess now we see the one with the flaws... Once agian, Sony only said it was a maintanence not a set-up for the upcoming patches or anything of that. Need more explaining? Honeslty for a regular maintanence you can not get any more specific than that.. believe me.

I did go off today, I can be a real jerk at times.. Sorry guys. My PS3 left me today :(
I just hope they fix something with it.. otherwise that is 150 dollars down the drain and another 600 for the PS3 -.- Or maybe they replace it? Who knows.. I like the nickname Sparky though, thanks :P

Everyone calm down. I believe we said several times this was nothing more than a hopeful rumor, and Sony hadn't officially confirmed anything. On the other hand, it's not necessarily wrong to be nothing more than hopeful, so take it easy (Tatsujin, this means you).

My PS3 still isn't working and I just sent it in to Sony, charged me 150 bucks.. and for what? Jeez -.- A whole month without CoD4, could you guys believe this? Mb guys

There is a rumor of it being pushed back to E3, but when they first announced 2.4 last week, I was told July 2nd, hopefully they didn't push it back again.

If they did, they better add Multiple PSN logins, and voice chat (while in game).
