SOE: PS3 Is Primed For The MMO
For the most part, Massively Multiplayer Online games have been restricted to PCs in the past. However, the instant consoles began to jump online, MMO makers began to consider a new platform for their titles, and now, the PlayStation 3 could be the perfect choice.
According to GamerChip, Sony expects MMos to become a major part of the PS3's software library in the future; they plan to "restructure" the PlayStation division and Sony Online Entertainment to make this happen. President of SOE, John Smedley, has heartily stated that the "next round" of MMOs will be made for both the PC and PS3, and says that 8 years of running an online service is valuable experience. However, we may have to wait a bit before we see something like EverQuest 2 on the PS3, simply because the PSN is still in a...well, a learning process, let's call it. While Smedley says it's a "significant and robust network," developers know the PSN needs to take a few more steps before they can realize their ultra-ambitious goals with new MMOs.
Our only question is, will MMOs attract traditional console players? It'll be a definite transition for most, but then again, the likes of Final Fantasy XI have probably helped generate a few fans in the past.
