SOE: PS3 Is Primed For The MMO

For the most part, Massively Multiplayer Online games have been restricted to PCs in the past. However, the instant consoles began to jump online, MMO makers began to consider a new platform for their titles, and now, the PlayStation 3 could be the perfect choice.

According to GamerChip, Sony expects MMos to become a major part of the PS3's software library in the future; they plan to "restructure" the PlayStation division and Sony Online Entertainment to make this happen. President of SOE, John Smedley, has heartily stated that the "next round" of MMOs will be made for both the PC and PS3, and says that 8 years of running an online service is valuable experience. However, we may have to wait a bit before we see something like EverQuest 2 on the PS3, simply because the PSN is still in a...well, a learning process, let's call it. While Smedley says it's a "significant and robust network," developers know the PSN needs to take a few more steps before they can realize their ultra-ambitious goals with new MMOs.

Our only question is, will MMOs attract traditional console players? It'll be a definite transition for most, but then again, the likes of Final Fantasy XI have probably helped generate a few fans in the past.

Interesting that it's the PS3. Most people would associate multiplayer games with the Xbox. But mmos would definitely increase the popularity of the PS3s multiplayer. And multiplayer is really the only advantage that the 360 has...

I l-o-v-e FFXI; I have never wasted as much time on any other game. Haven't been playing for a while... maybe it's time to pick it back up.

Hell yeah! I logged 50 days on XI! Waste of my life, but it was awesome! (Party)(Can I have it?)(Fishing) for (Excitement!). That was an experience I've never had anywhere else in any other game. Insanely time consuming, but incredibly satisfying and rewarding. Crafting (Fishing, Cooking, etc) and taking on a new job every month or whatever, seasonal events, updates every week keeping it fresh; it was brilliant and in-depth! I can only IMAGINE how much more detailed MMOs are going to get (and I thought XI was detailed for an almost decade-old game) and how much more time I'm going to waste. PS3 MMOs FTW!!!

by the way, I was on Siren =P and for anyone who hasn't played FFXI or an MMO, you're missing out on an awesome gaming experience!

This sparks a bit of a cloudy memory. I don't know the exacts, but I know that DC is working on an MMORPG game, and if I'm remembering correctly, it was slated for a PS3 release. I don't remember if that part is accurate or not. What I do know is that the entire game is being designed art-wise in-house by WildStorm Studios, headed by Jim Lee. Everything in the game from the actual DCU comic book characters to things like computers are being designed by WildStorm. I also read a long while ago that things that happen in the game are going to relate to and effect what's going on in the current comics. Think City of Heroes but being able to interact and potentially have crossovers with guys like Batman and Superman. I think the thing is still in development, it's been a while since WildStorm has mentioned anything on their blog about it.
