Hirai Presents "Life With PlayStation"

Nintendo Wii owners are well aware of its weather channel feature, and it seems Sony desired one, too...but they wanted to take it to a whole new level.

According to Gizmodo, Sony boss Kaz Hirai revealed "Life With PlayStation" at a recent press conference; it's a full weather application that boasts high resolution imagery, global weather satellite images, and even local/global news items (perhaps courtesy of the AP). Hirai wanted to make it clear that you're actually seeing real weather with this program; it's not just a simple forecast like you see on television. Hirai also spoke further about an impending photo function:

"For the primary version the application sticks to the present time but in the future we plan to build a system that can visually present stored photos and movies according to their recorded time and place, allowing users with their friends and family to enjoy the visuals in chronological order."

Er...that might be a little over the top, but hey, it's added functionality for the PS3. It's a neat idea, but we're relatively certain that most gamers just want games. "Life With PlayStation" is a cool bonus, but we can't see it being a bona fide system seller.

Actually sarcasm is awesome. And you really don't know if someone's sarcastic or not so don't judge.

Considering people use the PS3 to simulate black holes running into each other on a cold, dark, spacey night, I wouldn't be at all amazed if some weather fanatics bought a PS3 for this.

LOL, perhaps Dr. Mel or Scot Haney will pick up a PS3 to watch the weather at home... Maybe the PS3 will allow them to actually predict the weather.

Better make an in-game XMB function to be able to check live weather incase one of us gamer decides to pause a game to walk outside for a minute.

What's next, a MAP add-on to get directions?

See, I knew it, I freakin' knew it. Its dumb garbage like this that holds up important feature updates like the ones in the upcoming 2.40 firmware, and Playstation Home. If Sony just devoted all of its resources to pushing out ESSENTIAL Playstation 3 features, it wouldn't even be an issue as to which one is better, 360 or Ps3. And yet, they waste their time on the inconsequential, nonessential, and pretty much universally nonrequested weather program? Good businesss model Sony. Good job.

I highly doubt this weather feature is holding up the progress of more important, game related features, but i do agree with you. Not exactly what us gamers want.

If i have the internet for online gaming along with pc usage, most likely, i have some way of getting the local weather

Its a shame they can't get the forecast right, still its a nice feature and may look good when its running.
I like the phrase 'I don't need a weather man to tell me its pissing it down outside'

Perhaps it will be able to give in-game weather too... So you know if you need to bring an umbrella with you to Shadow Moses, a t-shirt will do OK, or most likely, a heavy winter jacket. Weather... LOL, since when are gamers so concerned with the weather we need it built into our gaming consoles, which I don't even wanna know how much harddrive space the thing will take up.

But hey, along with my MAPS idea, I think they should throw in something for the PS3 that can tell you the current cost of oil, and the cost of gasoline. Be about as useful as this weather addition.

I really couldn't see this as less of a neccesary feature. If Sony keep peddeling out crap like this onto the PS3 then it'll soon turn all PSP with its multifunctionality bollocks that turned out oh so well. I want a system that isn't full of crap filling up my harddrive when I know the next game I'll buy will have a 5Gb install before I even get to play it.

Well I for one like the sounds of this. I love the idea of waking up to a Hi-def globe announcing to me the coming weather and the days headlines. It's little features like this that make the PS3 feel more universally useful to me; then again I'm one of the ones who wants MORE than just a games console. As a last thought I would also like built in stock, currency and commodity tickers.

Yeah, for those who have their ps3 constantly connected, this is kind of a cool thing. Sounds WAY better than "local on the 8's"!!!

What the hell is wrong with all you?? Its a nice feature! I seriously doubt that sony has there whole team of developers on this small task. I know Sony has different teams tackling and handling various tasks. Just everyone calm down. Don't download the app.

they should be paying more attention to home or something like that, before creating ideas like this. P.S I am not saying the idea is bad.
