Hirai: MGS4 Caused PS3 Sales Spike

As if there was any doubt, Sony head man Kaz Hirai has confirmed that Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is indeed a true-blue system seller.

According to Kotaku, the PlayStation president made the announcement at Sony's mid-term strategy meeting, and he also noted that MGS4 sold 3 million copies worldwide during the game's launch week. Hirai said Konami's blockbuster is "the first title to fully utilize the capacity of dual layer Blu-Ray disc" and added that MGS4 has managed to create a "world of gaming entertainment that can only be realized on the PS3." Hideo Kojima's vision is amazingly impressive, to be sure, but because it's an exclusive, it most certainly pushed console sales.  Hirai's comment on the sales increase is as follows:

"In the first week of the release of Metal Gear Solid 4, sales of PS3 in the Japanese market grew significantly, [an] eight times increase as compared to the week before, proving that Metal Gear Solid 4 is a platform driver for PS3."

Yep, that's quite the leap, but again, we probably should've expected it, especially in the Japanese region. As of now, MGS4 is the reason to own a PS3, and that, we're sure, makes Sony very happy.

I just can't wait for other developers to follow in the footsteps of Kojima and bring to the world masterpieces of their own. I truly cannot think of anything that can come close to comparison to MGS4. A movie couldn't portray better the Metal gear series let alone the 4th installment. Congratulations Sony and Kojima

My friend broke down and bought a PS3, as soon as he got his hands on the first 15 minutes of MGS4. It's that impressive. Sony should have the first 30 mins of the game running on all the PS3s at Wal-Mart and GameStop.

It's great that it sold 3 million already.

Nothing wrong with owning more than one system, people. I have a 360 and I have no intentions of getting rid of it...despite the fact I haven't been playing it much lately. ;)

I was thinking of getting a 360, but didn't. I still might get it, but whats the point when you dont play it? I mean Ben you said it yourself you dont play your 360 that much, so whats the point in having it.

It's not very surprising, considering that this was the first chance in a while to buy an 80gb ps3.

The 360 is doing very well right now, but it really looks like it has gotten as good as it gets. On the other hand, the ps3 is still growing, rapidly. developers are finally getting the hang of making good games. I think the ps3 has a ways to go before reaching its full potential.

I will say yes Metal Gear is a AAAA not AAA Game lol.But XBOX 360 isnt that bad.Hell I still play Gears of War every once in a while but as far as AAA titles for 360 gose all it can bench on is Fable 2 and Gears 2 besides that im wayyyyy to much interested in Sony's line up of game....as Jed said 360 did its job but now has lost steam(and MGS4 taking thier fans away) and our AAA 10/10 (I Hope) titles will keep comin PS3 has much room to grow

Yea it's not very surprising. If there was an award for best overall game of the decade on any system or platform MGS4 would definitely be it!

I...don't think so. People are getting caught in the moment of MGS4 and it is a great game but in a year or so you'll look back and be like...hmm I WAS caught up in the moment.

Game of the year though...so far.

I have all 3 but its still safe to say the ps3 is a long ways off from catching the 360. Better games and Better online support.
