Hirai: MGS4 Caused PS3 Sales Spike
As if there was any doubt, Sony head man Kaz Hirai has confirmed that Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is indeed a true-blue system seller.
According to Kotaku, the PlayStation president made the announcement at Sony's mid-term strategy meeting, and he also noted that MGS4 sold 3 million copies worldwide during the game's launch week. Hirai said Konami's blockbuster is "the first title to fully utilize the capacity of dual layer Blu-Ray disc" and added that MGS4 has managed to create a "world of gaming entertainment that can only be realized on the PS3." Hideo Kojima's vision is amazingly impressive, to be sure, but because it's an exclusive, it most certainly pushed console sales. Hirai's comment on the sales increase is as follows:
"In the first week of the release of Metal Gear Solid 4, sales of PS3 in the Japanese market grew significantly, [an] eight times increase as compared to the week before, proving that Metal Gear Solid 4 is a platform driver for PS3."
Yep, that's quite the leap, but again, we probably should've expected it, especially in the Japanese region. As of now, MGS4 is the reason to own a PS3, and that, we're sure, makes Sony very happy.
