Rock Band/Guitar Hero Can't Play Nice

Rock Band 2 is definitely coming - even though it will debut first on the Xbox 360 - and as it turns out, the great peripheral caper continues.

While original Rock Band instruments will be compatible with the upcoming sequel, the two publishers still refuse to make the instruments for RB and GH (that's Guitar Hero, music geniuses) cross-compatible. According to Joystiq, someone has already tried to use their Rock Band guitar with the Xbox 360 version of Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, which just released this past weekend. Not surprisingly, he got the following unfortunate error: "An unsupported guitar peripheral has been detected. Connect either a Guitar Hero guitar or Xbox 360 controller and press START to continue." Well, that figures. The Rock Band guitar never worked on any version of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, if you remember. And if the 360 guitar don't work, we're pretty sure the PS3 guitar won't work, either.

All of this may resolve itself in the future, and it does help that both Rock Band and Guitar Hero will have multiple instruments from now on (most likely). The instruments for each franchise will be compatible with sequels, but it's unlikely they'll be cross-compatible between the franchises.

I'm curious to see the peripherals and the playlist for RB2...right now with a mega cool drum set and a st list of a hundred songs, i gotta say i'm leaning towards GH:World Tour...Then again, only time will tell...

sooo the rock band instruments work for guitar hero IV but not the other way around? I'm a bit confused, to me the wording of the article implies that Activsion made Rock Band when they actually don't

It's all about the $. Asking for RB and GH to have backwards compatible controllers is like asking Sony and Microsoft to allow their controllers to work on one an others console. There rival company's and always will be.

Typical. Both companies have to realize for the bulk of consumers it's going to come down to one or the other as who wants two sets of instruments (esp drum kits) all over the place? Maybe Nyko or another company will make some cross-compatible controllers, I have the Frontman guitar for PS3 and it works well with both Guitar Hero 3 and Rock Band. For me it will all come down to which game has the track list I most prefer as any additional features like Guitar Hero's plan to be able to create your own 'music' is gonna be crap. If you want to write music buy some real instruments. Right now with the massive amount of additional content for Rock Band I've downloaded and the fact it'll all be compatible with Rock Band 2, I'm leaning towards Rock Band 2, but either way it'll also be wait and see how both get reviewed before plunking another $150 our for another music game. No real reason to rush out and buy either right away I can see.

maybe learn more about the game before u say tht something is "gonna be crap". your not making your own music, your just taking a song on your xbox/ps3 and setting notes to it. i guess you could make your own music and put it on the xbox/ps3, but you would need your own instruments so ya...

What is Sony doing as you cannot completely blame it on Neversoft or Harmonix as the Rock Band guitar works with Guitar Hero: Aerosmith on the other console. I see more blame going towards Sony for the peripheral Hell of Guitar Hero/Rock Band.
