Downloading 2.40 Pain-Free...Mostly

Some believed that due to the immense level of anticipation for firmware update 2.40 that we may encounter downloading problems. You know, if the servers got all jammed up because a gazillion users were trying to obtain the new update all at once.

However, despite a few reports of users getting errors when trying to log in, or errors during downloading, it seems obtaining firmware 2.40 is a pain-free process. It'll depend on your Internet connection, but this is hardly the largest or longest firmware update we've seen in the PS3's history, and we haven't come across any reader complaints of server unavailability. Also, on that same note, there doesn't appear to be any problem with 2.40 itself. In the past, we've heard plenty of nightmare stories about updates for either the PS3 or Xbox 360 completely "bricking" the system; in fact, Sony has been known to issue more firmware updates simply for the sake of fixing what the last update did (update 4.01 fixes 4.00 for the PSP, for example). We've heard about multiple freezing issues in the official PlayStation message boards, though, so we're a trifle worried that whatever this problem is, it could be widespread.  But it doesn't appear to be a major issue...yet.

In the end, we've heard of people actually saying they'll wait to get 2.40 after the craze has died down, but we assure you, there's no need to wait. And even if there was, the craze would've died down by now. So go! Get! Enjoy!

kinda... this update is great and i thank the great gods of Sony for bestowing such a gift onto us, it just seems like it's lacking for the moment.. once the developer support kicks in, which hopefully shouldn't take to long, this update should really shine through more..

i know that Burnout will support trophies as of the 'Cagney' update, hope they add custom soundtrack support as well (either in the game build or through xmb)

this update is just short of wonderful, only because in truth it actually is a foundation for something that is wonderful that shall come to fruition soon enough

Pain free definitely not i was so exciting when i remembered about it in the morning i ran to my ps3 with my coffee and spilled it all over my crotch...burned my left testicle completely off.

But it was worth it!

mine was finished installing at 12:04 it worked fine but i noticed the xmb ran kind of slow in the game

ya it did run pretty slow, besides that i have no complaints and I can't wait for developers to issue updates so we can finally have trophies

I got mine easy, but it froze up Lego Star Wars when i was playing 2 player with a friend. also its signed me out of the PS Network a few times

I had no problem installing 2.40, it signs me out of the PS Network occasionally, & froze on Lego Star Wars after an hours play but its fine other than that.

i got mine around 9pm last night i was surprise it was out early for me yeaaahhh...it was pretty slow and well hope they add in game chat soon

mine appeared to be pain free until it tried starting with the new update installed. it made the startup sound and the screen was normal with the wavy thing and the words "Sony Computer Entertainment," but then it just showed the background and wavy thing moving around. the sign-in menu never came up. i let it sit for a while and then decided to restart it manually... same thing happened.
called sony and they said i did all i could do, and that i have to send it in. of course, it'll cost me $159 cuz its out of warranty.
so for me, this was a $159 update. not to mention that i won't have my ps3 for awhile. at least they said they will return it to me within 7 days of receiving it, so it should only be gone for a couple weeks i guess.
still, this is some frustrating shit. i wonder if anyone else has experienced something like this.
i need a drink...

the update itself was painless for me, but i can't update SSHD. I either get signed out and it says an error occurred or my playstation REBOOTS ITSELF. Anyone know what the problem might be?

UPDATE:
i tried reformatting the HDD, but it seems to be toast. I'll have to buy a new drive. At least I can get one larger than 60gb for less than $159.

No problems here with my update, to be fair to sony my ps3 has never crashed or hiccuped when downloading updates or anything really :), did hang on a game once or twice but thats about it.

BIG NEWS!!! 2.40 HAS BEEN PULLED FROM THE STORE!!!

even take a look at the update list that the ps3 uses to find out the latest version (http://fus01.ps3.update.playstation.net/update/ps3/list/us/ps3-updatelist.txt) its been put down to 2.36

NEWS ALERT: NoMoreWar you are not alone, your problem is so widespread that Sony has pulled 2.4 from their update servers. If you haven't updated yet you won't be able to until Sony fixes these problems.

i hope sony brings in game chat like i said before but it would b great if they did it with multiple people were able to talk to each other like some sort of chat room with out the chat room so they all can be playing their game and still talking to multiple of ur friends

they pulled the update before i could get my greasy hands on it. i hope when it is re-released it is bug free. a firmware update should not act like a virus. with friends like these...

Called Sony back. they agreed to fix it for free now. they were very nice and helpful this time and were very sympathetic. i guess its a huge problem. sounds like they will just replace my hard drive, which i was going to do... but free is free. just have to endure a couple weeks with out my ps3...

I've said it before and I'll say it again: when it comes to customer service, no corporation is perfect, but Sony is LIGHT YEARS better than Microsoft...who is the absolute worst. Just ask any RROD sufferers.

Sony's customer service is A in my book. I went through 3 PS2's and never had to pay for anything. They also all arrived in less than a week. My roommate's PS3 broke not long ago, he sent it to Sony and received a new one in 4 days.
