Kojima's Top 5 "Most Memorable And Influential" Games

Metal Gear Solid proved to the world - as if it needed proving again - that Hideo Kojima is a master of his chosen medium; a true visionary that has provided gamers with some of the most memorable interactive experiences in history. But as we have been inspired by so many of his productions, perhaps a fair question would be: what inspires him?

According to GameRush Entertainment, the MGS creator has revealed his top five most memorable and influential video games. Some of these may surprise you, but a couple most certainly will not:

  • Super Mario Bros. (series)
  • Portopia Renzoku Satsujin Jiken
  • Xevious (aww...remember this one?!)
  • Outer World (long-time U.S. gamers will know this as Out of This World)
  • Metal Gear Solid (duh)

Some may see it as a little egotistical to put your own game in such a list, but it makes perfect sense to us. It should be fairly obvious that Kojima's personal efforts inspire him on a daily basis; getting up to work on MGS4 is inspirational in and of itself, yes? Kojima punctuated his list with the following quote given to The Yomiuri Shimbun:

"Games are a composite art that evolves absorbing new technologies. I hoped to 'create a big wave' in the game world."

Well, we can safely say, without any reservations whatsoever, that you have done exactly that, Mr. Kojima. There are millions of fans around the world who would agree, and at this point, it's only about how much further you wish to go. How many more mountains can you scale in a lifetime? In many ways, gaming is still in its infancy, which means Kojima represents the purest definition of the word "pioneer."

Interesting games. I have no idea what the second one is.

Hopefully he's already working on MGS5.

Out of This World was an inspiration? >.> I mean, I guess the graphics at the time were supposed to be ground breaking or something? But... That game was just downright horrible as I look back on it! Granted, I played it endlessly trying to beat it, although I was also the same kid who never could beat Super Mario Bros... So yeah, good luck there to me eh!

As for adding MGS to his list, not at all. I kind of have to agree in the sense if you've created something you're very proud of, and it's not perhaps your own work that inspires you, but perhaps the characters and/or story you created, that goes beyond your daily abilities as a person. If you get what I mean.

I had no interest in the MGS series, not a care in the world for Kojima I suppose, although I knew little about either. After giving MGS4 a chance... I've reversed that statement... New fan? Sure, you could say that!

I still have not seen a live demonstration of MGS4. Having never played one of the games in the series... I guess I just haven't been motivated enough to finding a shop that is running this monster...

smash bros is actually one of the worst games I've ever played. A friend of mine was like...brawl is the best game ever so I played it.

matrixkurt: I can pretty much guarantee that Kojima isn't including Smash Brothers in that choice of "SMB series." No, I'm sure he's talking about the original 2D adventures, and they are some of the best games to ever exist.

I know you're young, but it's a REALLY bad idea to hate on the classics amongst people who have been playing games for about a quarter-century... Just a friendly warning. :)

LOL If Kojima listed Smash Bros. as one of his top five most memorable and influential games, I'd think the poor man was ON something. :)

I know you're all going to hate me for this, but really, I think the most memorable/influential games would most likely all be Nintendo games...Super Mario Bros., Zelda, Metroid, etc. Who HASN'T heard of these games? It's only hardcore gamers who've even heard of the games the guy listed above.
