Unreal Engine 3 To Power "Groundbreaking FPS"

At this point, maybe it would save time to ask who hasn't signed on to use the Unreal Engine 3. It seems like every time we turn around, another development studio has licensed the popular engine for use in a new project, and while we've seen great stuff from UE3, we have also noticed it can give devs problems with the PlayStation 3...

Hopefully, this won't be the case with Ignition Entertainment, who has just announced they have "entered into an agreement with Epic Games to license Unreal Engine 3 for its upcoming, 'groundbreaking' FPS'." (source- VideoGamer) Sure, everybody calls their FPS "groundbreaking" during the early stages of development (pretty sure Free Radical said that about Haze), but there's a reason they do that: it's always exciting to hear, even when we know it doesn't mean much.

"Epic's Unreal Engine 3 is an extremely versatile engine," said Jeremy Stieglitz, Game Director and Lead Designer, Ignition Florida. "So when deciding on technology for Ignition Florida's first next-generation video game, there was no questioning that Unreal Engine 3 is the way to go."

Epic's Vice-President, Mark Rein, added that Ignition is "pushing the UE3 in a very exciting direction" and further included a bit of praise, saying that "these guys have the chops to create some remarkable games." We certainly hope for something remarkable, but we have no further news at this time. All we know is that this mystery title is scheduled to arrive some time later next year, so we'll be on the lookout for any new info down the road. But jeez, end of 2009? Wouldn't Unreal Engine 4 be out by then?

I've been in other forums in the past where people have said that there are better engines than the Unreal Engine 3. I'm not one who knows about these things but if this is the case then why are devs not licensing the better engines?

UE3 is OK, but to me it always seems better to just develop your own engine while making the game so you can build it to fit the needs of the game.

Its just cheap and easy now(used to it), thats why they said, "Epic's Unreal Engine 3 is an extremely versatile engine" Just wait until they get a better handling on the PS3 and drop the UE3 engine and i dunno Naughty dog or Incognito figure out the Naughty Engine or something lol.

Groundbreaking...is that like Groundbreaking like Haze? XD

The problem with using middleware engines is that there is no real room for growth in the engine.Looking at Gears 2 I see no color improvements cept it went from a blueish hue to a copper brown hue,No color vibrancy at all...again.Unreal engine like all engines is only as good as the developers that know how to use it and honestly thats only Epic.They made it they know its limits.But I'm sure as Hell that they dont go off selling it based off it's limits,that suicide to the engine.Hmm If Insomniac went hardcore graphic and violent with R2 as Gears,I wonder who would have the better engine.My money would be on Insomniac.They made a engine from the ground up and improved on it for a 3rd gen game.Unreal engine 3 seems still so... 1st gen.The texture loading still takes forever,even with Epic handling the engine.Why should 4 layers of texture take so long to load on the UE3? and why the Hell are the colors so damn washed out? Why is there polygon breakdown as well? The shader is so thinned out too and all this with Epic at the helm.It dont matter what system it's on it happens to PS3,PC and 360.Stop buying the engine and start making your own engines again developers.You should take pride in the fact that you made your own and with enough effort make a better looking engine.

They said that was the "art" of Gears lmao. Sounds more like they just had horrible coloring :-P

Gears is not the only game with washed out colors.Every UE3 based game is washed out.Look at Bioshock for example,texture colors are washed out as well.Hell even the up coming Mortal Kombat Vs DC looks washed out.
