Konami Levels Lawsuit Over Rock Band

Gaming is big business, and just like any big business, it has its fair share of courtroom proceedings. The latest big lawsuit is Konami Corp. vs. Viacom Inc.'s Harmonix studio; the former party claims Harmonix's Rock Band game violates patents.

According to Bloomberg, Konami issued patents in 2002 and 2003 that "relate to simulated musical instruments, a music-game system and a musical-rhythm matching game." They are now arguing that Rock Band goes against Konami's acquired patents, and they're demanding cash compensation, plus an order that would stop Viacom and Harmonix from utilizing those inventions in the future. Now, Konami has revealed they plan to issue a competitor to the likes of Rock Band and Activision's Guitar Hero; it's Rock Revolution, which is scheduled to arrive later this year. But it seems they want one of those competitors to pay them for stealing what Konami claims was part of those patents. Viacom and Harmonix have yet to issue a response to the suit.

We really don't know what's going to come of this, but it could turn into a serious issue for the Rock Band makers. Then again, these things tend to drag on for a while...we might see Rock Band 3 and Rock Revolution 2 before everything is settled. Courts these days, you know?

I really hate how the guitar games are fighting about everything, songs, bands, controllers. The thing that angers me the most is how the controllers dont work for both games. They function and even look the same. Think about this, if anyone released a standard controller that didnt work with every game, they wouldnt sell one. I understand its business, but it is incredibly annoying.

Personally, I get a kick out of anything that goes against GH or RB. Why not learn a REAL instrument? SOUTH PARK really hit these games well with the "Guitar Queero" episode recently. :-)

I play real guitar and real drums. But i still play games like Guitar Hero. Playing these games doesn't mean you can't also learn an instrument. Games are there for entrainment, so get over it.

There just games so we fantasize being a rock legend, are you a rock legend?
Saying why not learn to play a real instrument is like saying why not learn how to become a real race driver when we play game like GT4.

If RB and GH break patent laws then the developers/publishers should be penalised.

Rock Band is published by EA right? Then it wouldn't surprise me if they broke patent laws.
The law is the law. If Rock Band breaks the law then it's makes should be punished accordingly.

Well Konami came out with Guitar Freaks, beatmania etc. well before ps2 even existed. Still it is a little odd that this is just coming about now. Rock band has been out for a while and i dont see what they could have done outside of having extra instruments that guitar hero didnt do so why is this only directed at Harmonix?
