E3 2008: New PS3 Exclusive MMO, 256 Players Supported!
Sony had a lot to say about the future of the PlayStation Network and how community features are becoming more and more important in this new generation. Then, near the close of the conference, they proved their focus by allowing Zipper Interactive to unveil Mag, an absolute beast of a MMO.
The trailer they showed at the event is just downright amazing, with a gigantic war happening amidst stunning visuals and a horde of players. The special part? Not only is everyone you see in Mag a human participant, but there can also be as many as 256 players at once involved in any given altercation! Forget all about that 60-player stuff in Resistance 2; this holds the new record! But in order to scale things down a bit and make the game more accessible, players will join 8-man parties as they head out into the battlefield, and the best players will be assigned as leaders. You will have plenty of reasons to stick around; you can fully customize your character, for example, who will progress statistically as you succeed in certain combat endeavors. With so many people playing together at once, we thought it very impressive that the game could look that good.
We hope to bring you that E3 trailer for Mag very soon, along with the first batch of screenshots. Don't be surprised by what you see; that really is a MMO, and it really will support 256 players at once. We don't yet have an exact release date for it yet, but we can probably expect it some time next year. Along with titles like The Agency and the other newly unveiled MMO, DC Universe, the online capacities of the PS3 have just shot sky-high. There will be more reasons than ever to be part of the Network!
