E3 2008: Sony Ain't Gonna Copy Off The Competition

Some pessimists will say that everyone steals from everyone in big business, but the optimists like to think that global corporations actually have real live thinkers on staff. Well, Sony basically tells us they've got plenty of those thinkers, and they're not about to steal any ideas from competitors.

See, after Microsoft revealed their Xbox Live avatars, they claimed it was a "fresher" approach than Sony's, but Sony fired back on Wednesday by saying they're not about to copy others. SCEA president Jack Tretton has been busy responding to journalists all week at E3, and here's what he had to say on the subject:

"I don't know enough about Microsofts avatars. I think we're going in a bit of a different direction with Home. We made a line in the sand and made a strategic decision on Home and that's where were going." (source- GameRush Entertainment)

In regards to those avatars, Tretton responded- "My understanding is that it's a more simplified vision. That may be enough for some and not enough for others. We are who we are. You have to be who you are. You can't backpedal down a road if it doesn't appear its going to plan. You have to be aware of what's not resounding with people. We've got a plan for PS3. I think the worst thing we could do is look at the competition and try and do what they're doing." Okay, that's kinda roundabout of an explanation, but we get the point. Sony isn't about to tear down their current blueprints just 'cuz one of their competitors makes a mere comment.  They like their idea.

PS3 home avatars haven't been released yet, but they DID think of them first, and they announced them first. The 360 avatars are basically just a rip off of the Wii's avatar system.

The Home avatars are more realistic looking, instead of being a rip-off from the Wii's you can interact more with others.

it looks like microsoft doesn't think the same way sony those, i mean many things on xbox is a rip of from other companies, for eaxample XMB, the home button[guide button], R2 AND L2 triggers, avatars, and alot more. I mean microsoft doesn't really impress because they are not original.

Agreed, Microsoft is not original.. well, look at it's main founder, Bill Gates... Where did he get the Windows idea from? Oh, hello there Apply... :) Microsoft all together is just a big idea stealing corporation to be honest, I am glad that Sony is completely ignoring the competition.

umm, who came up with the GUI? One of the most important innovations in computing? I believe that's universally attributed to Bill Gates.
Really, everything that's claimed about MS in that regard is even more true of Apple. Let's face it Apple Computer Inc. v. Microsoft Corporation (1994) was just a huge attempt by Apple to steal total intellectual property rights on GUI Desktop design.
Both Apple and Microsoft are businesses, niether are good nor evil. This is life, not a Disney movie.

Next thing you know, M$ will be trying to take ideas for games. All the while talking down to the competition like they always do. Bunch o' pricks!

I really think microsoft did avatars to be like nintendo and their miis. Sony's avatars were just one part of their plan to create an online community.

The only original thing microsoft ever did was with computers,(and that wasn't exactly original). Now they wait for an industry to prove itself and then they try it out.

PS3's Home will blow those console out of the water. Anyone else hear 360 fans spouting the mantra "Xbox 360 is built for online". Well, now PS3 will show them that building it for online still didn't hit the mark. We've got Home, free online play, insane size games like MAG and even user based uploadable content. What's the 360 got?......i'm waiting.
Although, i do have to say that the Trophies looks a lot like 360's achievements. Yep, everyone copies.

@thepoetrazel

btw why u say mag is insane size game?
its only 256 Players

MMO should be able to serve thousands of players

pc game MMO already support more than 1000players. long time ago,

i remember playing Ragnarok Online when there a photo session with the GM. duh! there more than thousand player in Prontera (a city). and thats damn crowded lol

RF Online when Chip War. Thats what i call MMO :D

its really "Massive Multiplayer"

256players for a console game is pretty impressive in my book. Maybe not a World of Warcraft crapload of people at one time but honestly I don't want to play a game with 1000 people...and 800 of them being 10 year old brats

Like Minishmaru said, for a console game this is big. And really, in this genre of online game, 256 is big. If i can quote Arnold "It's a war! An honest-to-goodness WAR". That's why this is an insane size, cos unlike other games in this genre matches aren't battles, they're wars.

Someone should learn the difference between a console OS and a Computer OS.
Why do you think you need Bootcamp to run Windows on a Mac?
