No Trophies But "Required Honors" For Soul Calibur IV

With firmware update 2.40, the talk of the gaming world quickly began to revolve around two very special features that came with the update: the in-game XMB and Trophy support. But as this is a relatively new occurrence, many new games still aren't with the program just yet.

Namco's fighting blockbuster, Soul Calibur IV, is right around the corner, and perhaps not surprisingly, it will not boast the ability to have customized in-game music, and it will not support Trophies. Of course, the latter could be added at some point in the future, but bear in mind that Namco has a replacement already built into the game: Honor. According to Talk PlayStation, you can unlock these "required honors," which are essentially Achievements or Trophies unique to the game. When you unlock one of these honors, you'll know because a message will pop up and inform you of your success. No, they're not Trophies, but they're something to strive for, and they're certainly better than nothing.

We're hoping that Namco sends us our review copy within the next few days, and when we get it, we'll dive in and then - not long after - give y'all our analysis. We're not about to knock points off due to a lack of custom music or Trophies, in case you're wondering.

I cant wait for the game! Maybe they can add in game music and trophy support for Tekken 6.

Sony needs to Make these two features requierments or Developers are never going tocare about it...You see even after we get our Update to make this possible were still getting gimped..what do u think sony should do Ben

They should definitely make at least the Trophy system a requirement. If M$ didn't enforce Achievements it would have never got as big as it is now. From what I hear 360 developers say adding Achievements to games isn't a hard process, so it can't be too hard to add Trophies to games. Especially games still in development.

I'm sure that trophies isn't that hard to develope but i don't think it's as easy to program as everyone thinks it is. Cause look at uncharted, naughty dog said they'd put trophies in the game but they said we would get them around mid-august. Also developers are always looking to improve and games by catering to customers so i think that since people on every blog are like "trophies, trophies, trophies" then i'm sure they understand that not only does it add replay value but also fan appeal.

It's easy for us just to sit here and with the games coming out in 08' and early 09' to say add the trophy system,add the custom music option.But its not,it takes years to make these games and alot of the games were in alpha or beta form and I sure as Hell dont want a game delayed because people cant wait for the 3rd-4th gen games to start having the trophy system.It takes planning and alot of coding to make the system work.I'm just happy we got the in-game XMB.It's funny how people are impatient and never satisfied.

Who cares? Just bring it on! We don't need no stinking trophies! Gamers are salivating waiting on this game. This is easily as big as GTA4 and MGS4 (at least, around MY way), just without all the hype. I'll be getting off work Tuesday and going directly to the store to grab this. The rest of my week is wrapped up!

I dont think sony has to make trophy support mandatory. I think that the game developers want to incorperate them, but in order to have them in games coming out now would probly delay their releases. I dont know how hard it is or how long it takes to do the torphy thing but I think they will show up in a lot of games to come.

BTW, I DO think they should make trophies manditory, at least by the end of the year. I own a PS3 (first) and a 360, and there's a reason why M$ is making more money off of multiplatform games than Sony: Achievement points. It doesn't make the game but it does add to the replay value. Plus they're addictive. But I'd rather show a trophy to my friends than just a number. More trophy support = more games sold for the PS3. Guaranteed.

So funny how this game street date was broken so early, but i think its because of theft or other reasons.

The gamestop near me told me they were missing about 10 copies and its not even shipped out to them yet, at least from what UPS told them. Thats roughly half a grand, its kinda bad actually.

That being said,I actually had a chance to play this game on friday at my friend's house ( he had a copy shipped from California, from what ive played, it should do well, some hardcore tourney players will have to find new ways of playing certain characters at high levels ( like taki )

The game looks really pretty on his HDTV

It was more or less a month back. I got my copy last Saturday. I havent seen anything that stood out with Honors aside from the fact that when you see the message on your screen, you usually got a new customized part for character creation, or artwork or something. The artwork's pretty sweet, but the customizable parts....not so much. There's some pretty ridiculous lookin stuff. I'm also missing 2 characters, The Apprentice, and someone else. Anybody who has played or owns the game got an idea how to unlock???

I Believe you need to beat the game with Vader (or Yoda,he looks to be a DLC) I heard the Apprentice is a real pain in the ass.Also try going undefeated with all the characters on normal mode or above.Of course you might have to beat the story mode to unlock as well.

Arrrg! No trophy support for this game? Sorry, but I think I'm going with the 360 version. I'd rather play as Vadar on PS3, but if I can just download him (free or not) later on, I'd rather go with the version my friends will be playing. Plus I'll get "nerd points."

If you can't beat someones ass in person like the good ole days. Then obviously online would be the next best thing...but not everyone likes to play online so "honor" is welcome in my book :)
