Star Trek Online Boldly Goes Console

In days past - days that aren't too far in the past, actually - most console owners ignored the announcement of a new MMO. But this new generation has seen all gamers embrace the Internet, which means times are changing. Remember M.A.G from Sony's E3 press conference?

And as further evidence, Cryptic has officially confirmed that their new project, Star Trek Online, is being developed for both next-gen consoles and the PC. Here's the announcement from their official site:

"Powered by the Cryptic Engine, Star Trek Online will be developed for both console and PC formats. With customizable ships and characters from the Klingon Empire and United Federation of Planets, ground, space and shipboard gameplay and unique options for player-generated content set in the Star Trek universe, Star Trek Online is the MMOG that allows you to boldly go where no one has gone before!"

If you peruse the site, you can check out some early media for the game and gather in a few more details. One interesting little tidbit is that they'll be unveiling the first gameplay footage of the game on August 10 at the Official Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas. So if you're a big-time Trekkie and you're planning on attending, you'll be the first to see Star Trek Online...that's only fitting, yes? We'll bring you more on STO when it becomes available.

I would like all MMO's to be free to play, even if they wouls raise the price form like $60 to $70. But i heard that it cost a lot to run the servers, hopefully they can make it free somehow.

It doesn't just cost money to run the servers. Most MMOs are constantly updated and patched. They have to pay the people who do that. There are also numerous employees that have to be on call in case the servers crash or if a bug needs fixed and that also costs money. The only free to play MMO that I own is Guild Wars and I honestly don't know how NC Soft made it free. They must use androids or something. But seeing as they are focusing on bringing MMOs to the PS3, that could be a good thing.

I would love to play in a Star Trek universe, however the cost and the amount of time it will eat out of my days and evenings is prohibitive... Older gamers who have 9 to 5 jobs (or longer) find it difficult to put the time needed aside to play these games and make full use of the subscription... if you subscribe to at least one MMO, plus cable, and your mobile (iPhone) etc, it really does start to mount and you wonder where all your cash is going too.

Personally I don't sub to anything at the moment and I don't have an iPhone. My mobile phone is paid by the company I work for, however I can see temptation would riddle anyones budget :( ...and there is so much of it around...

Well we can always hope that this game won't have a subscription cost, you'll just have to buy the game and that's it.
