Wheelman Stalls, Won't Run Until 2009
When a delay is announced, we don't get quite so indignant as other sites. We figure, if the team needs extra time to make a great game, just give it to them; we'll all benefit in the end. No need to be impatient. So perhaps we should adopt that same philosophy again with The Wheelman.
It was first announced back in 2006, and the final product will be the combined result of Vin Diesel's Tigon Studios, Midway, MTV Films and Paramount Pictures. See, there's both a game and a movie in the works, but for some reason, they haven't been able to hit their planned progress with either. According to GameSpot, the game that was once scheduled for holidays 2007 has now slipped into 2009...but then again, perhaps that makes sense, considering the movie is in the same boat: it isn't scheduled to arrive until next year. Midway provided a simple statement on the matter:
"Midway is committed to developing and publishing high-quality games. It is important for us to support the development team with the resources and time needed to make Wheelman a great game experience. Wheelman is now scheduled to ship for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC in the first quarter of 2009."
Tigon Studios has plenty of potential (we still remember and love Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay), and based on early information, The Wheelman is both promising and potentially innovative. Let's just hope all this extra development time will be used to good purpose, and the end result will be worthy of a purchase.
