PS3 Tracking Down Wii In Japan

Could Nintendo-crazy Japan be slowly turning in another direction? Oh, get outta town.

The Wii exploded in the Land of the Rising Sun and while it has slowed down a bit since, it's still far in front of the PlayStation 3. We'd mention the Xbox 360, but we're not entirely certain that console exists in Japan... Anyway, according to what PSBeyond found in Japanese gaming publication Enterbrain, the trend may be switching around as the sales ratio has apparently experienced a major change. In May, the Wii was outselling the PS3 by a ratio of 6:1, but in June, that ratio dropped to 1.7:1. Obviously, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots fueled a big spike in PS3 sales, but what Wii software is going to blow up within the next few months? In all honesty, what does the Wii have in 2008 that can compete with the PS3's lineup? Analysts expect the PS3 sales upswing to continue, and the Wii really needs some new software to keep the top spot.

On the PSP side of things, Sony's handheld once again outstripped the DS by a count of 274,131 to 195,714 in June, so there's no problem in the portable category. But remember when the PS3 launched in Japan and they had a grand total of about 80,000 machines to go around? It was a disaster, basically, but it's mid-2008 now...and times are changing.

The Wii is showing it's weakness already. It's not diverse enough to have new games. It's already struggling to come up with new things. It's getting boring fast.

I own a Wii and after watching E3 I was really disappointed with the future of the system. In my opinion this year is looking very limited acccording to what was shown at E3. This convention is where the big 3 show off all of the new toys and gadgets for the new year. The Wii was missing out on the WOW factor this year. No wonder Japan is now looking at the PS3.

Yeah I agree with thepoetrazel on this one, most of the games coming out on the wii are extremely fun but after a while the games start to getting boring with because their isn't that much incentive to keep playing bowling, or mii sword fighting again and again and again. The wii is really focusing on the casual gaming aspect of video games and imo that's great for a month or two but after 3 months it doesn't seem fun anymore.

Its just how Nintendo ALWAYS does it. They get a system that sells like hotcakes (wtf are hotcakes? are they REALLY that good cuz I don't know where that phrase came from...anyway) and then it dies down and they are prepared to launch another system...perhaps smaller? or in this case HD compatible. I'm sure a new DS is bound to rear its ugly head considering their sales have supposedly flatlined. Thats a major difference between Sony vs the competition AND Nintendo since someone said Nintendo isn't really part of the console wars. Sony keeps their systems around for quite a long time....the other guys..."man this crap isn't selling anymore ,lets make another one!"

1st off LMAO @ fatchad420... love bumps!

My girlfriend even got tired of the Wii a few months ago and I sold that sucker. I still don't understand why that damn thing sells so much still. At first when it came out and was hard to find, and had games like Smash and Galaxy coming out I can see it seeling. I know the price is also a big factor, but to still be outselling all other systems month after month is ridiculous.

I bought one... Trust me guys, the thing dosnt excite you for past the 5th day... It is boring as nuts. I havnt tried online yet... maybe I will later on tonight :)

I liked Nintendo back when they had the Super Nintendo and all but now they need to bring a serious overhaul of hardcore games that graphically compete as well. Stop with the friggin hardware and just get good games along with the casual... I guess.

I think the thing that made the wii so popular, the fact that it is different, is also what is bringing it back down. It's a fad. Now, every game on the system is trying so hard to do something different. Gamers are left with a plethora of half-baked games that were thrown out there to catch on with the fad. They want better graphics, physics, and AI that the Wii simply can't provide.

The best thing about the Wii is the classic downloads. After I beat Zelda, Galaxy, and played Prime, the experience was mostly classic games, at least for me. Umbrella Chronicles was fun for a short while, Smash was ok but I'm not one of those enormous Smash fans so it got old after a few weeks. And personally I had Mario Kart the day it came out and traded it a week later, the DS version is still the superior Mario kart game imo. It was nice to play it on my big screen but besides that it seemed like the same old thing. Boom Blocks was fun and Wii Sports got probably more play than anything, bowling is the shit I have to admit.

I applaud Nintendo for doing what they did, but I'm sorry...there's no software for that thing. It's the GC all over again in that respect, and it's just painful to watch.
