Activision: PS3 Outsells 360 In 2008

There have been a lot of firsts for Sony and the PlayStation 3 in 2008, and that includes the first month (now "months," plural) where the PS3 outsold the Xbox 360 in the U.S. But one of the biggest game publishers in the world believes that trend will continue, and the PS3 will top the 360 in total sales when all is said and done in 2008.

According to ShackNews, Activision CEO Mike Griffith spoke about the company's expectations for console sales this year, and they believe the 360 will end up behind the PS3 and Wii. Of course, the Wii should retain its crown without any problem whatsoever - despite the bizarre disappearance of quality software - but PS3 owners should see this as an encouraging prediction. Here's Griffith's expectations:

Wii- 15 million
PS3- 8 million
Xbox 360- 6-7 million
PS2- 4-5 million

We've already seen the PS3 track down the Wii in Japan, and with the impending PS3 lineup, it's hard to envision anything but continued forward progress for Sony. Furthermore, 10 years is a very long time, so they've got plenty of time to whittle away at Nintendo's lead... It's a big lead, yes, but all it might take is the likes of Resistance 2, Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, God of War III, etc. Competition is always good, though!

Big lead? Honestly, it looks like the PS3 is catching up pretty fast to the Wii... but then agian, 15 million is a whole lot of digits compared to 8 million...

I'm not sure where I could find this information, but how big of a lead does the 360 and Wii have over the PS3 in terms of total number of consoles sold?

I'm not entirely sure...at this point, I think it depends on which source you use. Arnold would be the one to ask, though; he's the one who handles the official sales updates (NPD) every month.

I really feel like the wii isn't going to top 100 million in its lifetime, however long that is. but in 10 yrs it's a definite possibilty and it only helps that gaming is becoming bigger and bigger. As for this year though idk gears 2 will definitely be a big system pusher as for resistance it's definitely not in know as gears is. so it resistance might just do what mgs4 did and boost sales but not significantly. As for LBP i already see the headlines "LBP is sold out and for each copy sold there is a sold ps3." little optimism there but it's all saying "a bright future."

Its funny to me that every gamestop I go to every employee dogs the ps3 but the ps3 just keep selling and selling. They always say its crap trying to talk me into buying a 360. I always tell them I had a 360 but it sounded like a motorcycle when I played it and it did I thought it was going to explode so I took it back I love my ps3 "smiles and hugs the ps3".

Yeah along with Kotaku, quite a handful of gamestop or any videogame retail store dislike the PS3...I guess cuz its the cool thing to do yanno? Except for Toys R' Us, my gf promotes the PS3 lol

Ha. I get the same thing to, especially when the PS3 first came out, I'm just like wait and see buddy. It'll overpower the 360, and once they come out with the 720 or whatever there gonna name the thing. It may have a chance with the PS3.

The ps3 can catch the Wii once it goes down to $300.

Just watch, Microsoft will keep lowering their price, so will Sony. Once Sony's 80GB version goes down to $300 watch people ignore the Wii and instead get the ps3.

I like this guy's prediction, I think when you look at a game like LittleBigPlanet, and then at proven big sellers like Gran Turismo. Sony's got the edge when it's all said and done. Not to mention how much better the ps3 does overseas.

@osxjunkhead85- Your completely right! I almost feel guilty walking into a gamestop and buying anything for the PS3. They always have to make snide remarks about Sony products like they're trying to get you down about it and buy something else. Does anyone else get that too?

Thankfully, most of the guys at EB Games, north of the border in Ontario, seem to have PS3s from the looks of things and are pushing Sony's flagship console. It comes down to places like EB and Gamestop that push the consoles. I wonder if Sony is doing anything to target this array of 360 fundamentalists.

It was only a matter of time before it outsold the 360. The fact that BluRay won the DVD wars and studios are no longer producing movies on HD-DVD had a big impact I'm sure. I'm willing to bet there's going to be record sales for Sony this Christmas/Holiday season.

I bought my PS3 and I have bought most of my games at Best Buy and I've never gotten any flak about it, but then again I've always liked Best Buy and they've never done anything to not make me want to shop there anymore.

The gamestop that I go to has tons of Sony lovers in there. And I never see anyone buying anything for the 360 either. Thats not to say that they dont, but its not common any more. People are starting to realize what we all did from day one: and that is the PS3 is the most powerful console ever made, and it has the best games. Despite what game pro says. God, I hate that magazine.

Hey ppl I had my PS3 for a month I sold my 360 for it and now all my Gamestp buddies are giving me all kinds of flack every time i walk in they talk about how the PS3 has no games but thats all changing now. Im happy with my PS3 and proud to be part of the playstation network

Tell them, when M$ makes a system thats not guaranteed to crap out on them and the ONLY action they've taken was to extend their warranties...then you'll take their PS3 slamming with more seriousness :-P Until then, tell them to enjoy their RRoD

When I bought my PS3 at Gamestop a year and a half ago, Gamestop was recommending the PS3 to everyone, telling us it had more of a future then the Xbox 360. I had already thought that myself, but it was nice hearing it from the store too of course.
The PS3 is following the course of the PS2, and considering Sony's history, it's easy to have blind faith in Sony.

I worked at EB (now GameStop, I know) back in college, and I have to admit, we had a kick-ass staff. It was like a world's first. Just a bunch college students - mostly - who knew a lot about games and played no favorites. Customers LOVED us. We shattered all kinds of sales records for one holiday season.

Things have kinda changed now, though. It's like every time I walk into a GameStop, there's at least one complete and TOTAL idiot fanboy that I can't STAND. I think it's a job requirement now, or something.

Keep in mind that MS counts systems shipped to retailers as "sold" so the numbers can be a bit tricky. NPD Group, a market research firm reported that the Will sold more than 666,000 units (U.S.) in June ! PS3 sold 403,000 (U.S.) and 360 sold 219,600 units for June 2008 !

According to npd's research, the Wii is the top selling console in the U.S. !

Resistance 2 and Killzone 2 are huge FPS. Gears of War 2 was a disappointment to what most people said because it is more like 1.5, rather than 2. Resistance 2, filling up nearly 50 gigs (not confirmed) is going to be a "huge" hit with Killzone 2. Don't forget about God of War III, if Versus stays exclusive as well, and the biggest of all of them is Little Big Planet ... this title will demolish alot of games and be ranked "best game of the year" for 2008, it already is actually, haha.

Its cheaper to buy a PS3 in the long run. Bill gays and his scamming 360 make you pay for online. My buddy bought a Wii and with all the accessories he paid $500 and didnt even get everything. He wish he bought a PS3 now. PS3 is for real gamers that want to relax after a long day and play.
