Final Fantasy Versus XIII Set For December 2008 Release?

Final Fantasy XIII is still a ways off, and most all sources have a "TBA 2009" release date for FFXIII's counterpart, Final Fantasy Versus XIII. The latter is still a PlayStation 3 exclusive, by the way, and Square-Enix just confirmed it would have a worldwide simultaneous release. They didn't give us a release date...but maybe a couple major retailers have let it slip.

First up, in perusing GameStop.com on a completely unrelated venture, we found that Versus XIII had a pre-order ship date of December 13, 2008, which may or may not be nothing more than a placeholder date. You know how GameStop loves to hand them out just to up the pre-order number, right? But then, a PSXE reader sent us a tip that Best Buy boasted a similar date: December 15, 2008. Now, because Square-Enix hasn't confirmed any release date, we can only treat this as rumor, but it's quite the coincidence that both GameStop and Best Buy say Final Fantasy Versus XIII is actually coming out this year...

This would be one hell of a time for the game to arrive; it means yet another hot PS3 exclusive will be available for the holiday season. We can already expect the likes of Resistance 2 and LittleBigPlanet; is Square-Enix tossing its hat into the ring with Versus XIII? Let's hope those dates are accurate!

I agree, as nice as it would be for it to come out this holiday season. I really doubt they really made that much progress on FFv13. I don't think there's even that much news on even the battle system. Also, if anything, I would trust Famitsu's date over bestbuy or Gamespot.

Is think a joke? Do you know how far behind Versus is compared to FF XIII? They had to take people from the Versus team just work on FF XIII. Try more like 2011 at best. Seriously, this game is not slated before FF XIII. Moreoever those are year end placeholder dates nothing more.

that's actually not true. the media changed it to say that the versus team needed to help ff13 get going but it was actually more like the versus team was helping out the ff13 team when they weren't doing anything. this is what ff13 versus director, Mr.Nomura, said. And seeing how the two directors, who both did ff7 btw, of ff13 and ffv13 have some tension between them, i don't think that one director would let SE put their game on hold for the other guy's game. but anywayz i just want ps3 rpg's to actually come out. And that means good ones.

I don't know, they also at one point had FF13 as a Dec. 31 2008 release date. This is most likely just a placeholder date, but god I hope this is true.

thats been on gamestop for a long time final fantasy 13 was on there for december 3 but they changed that so it might be right

I'm not very keen on the new battle system they are going to use (FFXII Style). And to be honest it doesn't look as awesome as Versus does. I mean compare the trailers, it's easy to see which one is going to be darker (The Anime lover inside me is drooling over the Versus trailer). That and the fact that Versus is supposed to play like Kingdom hearts really makes me want to play Versus more.

I'm not saying FFXIII is going to be bad, i'm just more excited about Versus.

Surely GameStop and BestBuy aren't very reliable sources... a part of me hopes this is true though. And I see what you mean about the similar dates thing Ben, I wonder why they picked those days in particular? And if this was true, why would Enix give GameStop and BestBuy this kind of info and not other outlets?

Never believe Square's first announced release date on anything. They always use these types of placeholder dates, and they always push it back. I had a copy of FFXII on preorder for 2 years because of this practice.
