Final Fantasy VII PS3 Remake Or Sequel: The Dream Is Dead

We can hope no longer. It just hurts too much. As of today, we at PSX Extreme believe the dream is dead: the idea of a Final Fantasy VII remake or sequel for the PlayStation 3 has flat-lined in our minds.

It suffered the biggest blow yet when the supposed "big FFVII-related announcement" at Square-Enix's private party last month turned out to be nothing more than a Final Fantasy XIII demo that will come with next year's Blu-Ray release of "Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete." It's good news, but it's hardly what we were looking for. And then there was the uber-lame rumor that Final Fantasy VII for the PS3 mysteriously popped up on Best Buy's computer with a release date of August 16. We heard about it, and told you about it (that's our job), but it was just painful to even acknowledge. Talk about grasping at straws. And it was then that we realized- all we've ever done for years is grasp at straws! Everything we may have heard from Square-Enix regarding the possibility of a remake or sequel was either grossly exaggerated, misinterpreted, or simply false from top to bottom. Over and over, the company has said they have no plans to undertake any such project, and that's where it ends.

Yes, that's where it does end. As much as we want it, we have now resigned ourselves to the fact that it will never happen. We're just sick and tired of getting our hopes up, only to see them dashed, over and over. And in retrospect, those hopes continued to spring from completely unfounded reports; pipe dreams, is really what they were. So no more. Ladies and gentleman, boys and girls, gamers of every age and type, we hereby pronounce the Final Fantasy VII remake and/or sequel PS3 rumor to be dead. May it rest in peace. 'sniff'

I will keep believing in FF VII remake. The compilation of FF VII will not end till 2017, so you might want to re-think of that. Square-Enix is too busy with the upcoming titles on the PSP and specially with FF XIII / Versus (Yes, they do have different departments that work on specific games). We're in 2008, there is 9 years left and SE is hiding something.

I'm sure they will remake the game in couple of years, thats when they've learned how the PS3 works, and possibly the PS4 might come out and they may wave towards that direction. I am patient ... with tears.

Move on people

I've always been against a remake of this game. I know it's a great game but I always feel that FF should always move forward and even if they do spinoffs that's fine.

That's what i like 'bout FF you get a new story every other year. Well now it's taking longer, but yeah.

hmmm...i actually got to thinking and i've just beaten ff7 :), and like i actually gonna agree with scarecrow on this one, and not be upset they're not remaking this. basically for the same reason scarecrow stated and also i think that it worked for the ps1 cause ff7 was so groundbreaking for the ps1 and if it's remade for ps3 it'll be top-notch but not the same impact as for ps1. But as for sequel i hope that after ff13 and ffv13 they start a sequel.

just the thought of it almost makes me want to cry, just think of the sheer awsomeness that a remake could be if its done right and we all know that square could pull it off and besides why not, pretty much the whole ff community would kill to get their hands on a game like that. :(

I want to go a little farther than you Ben. Not only is the FFVII remake dead. But in my opinion any respect I had for Square-Enix is dead. I will from here on out not give a crap about any news relating to my ex favorite game developer.

I really gave up on it a few years ago. Upon hearing about the "big announcement" (my ass), I actually gained a little hope that there was some way ffvii could nake some big news. It was all for naught. The only thing that would catch my interest would be the official announcement from s-e, which we know will never happen.

FFXII was awesome, a bit more mature storywise and really gave you different characters from what we're used to.

To this day I don't understand. FF7 is not that great a game, I didn't really enjoy it that much. FF7 on the ps3 will be exactly the same as FF7 on the ps1, but with better graphics.

Finally, the original game was very good and I loved it when I played it. But everyone needs to get past this wanting a remake, I would rather have a new game than a remake anyday.

Im sick of this crap. Lets show em what WE can do.. I hereby call for a boycott of FFXIII. I will not buy this game.. play it.. rent it. Screw them. Fellow respectable gamers.. let this run rampant thru the web.. and let us MAKE our voices be heard. BOYCOTT FFXIII!!! Who's with me.. seriously.. spread this as far and wide as you can. You guys are jokin there aint no way they could ever make a remake,oh then errbody gon be like "we want remakes of mgs 1,zelda ocarina of time,gta san andreas/vice city,golden eye etc.n all the other classic games n we'll move into an era where we play only old games remade.Game developers know it's easy to do a remake,because the story n errthang else already there,but they don't want that,they know they gotta move on to make other classics.
New Stars are born,we don't pray to God for a Micheal Jordan,Pele or any other retired superstar remake,we move on and accept the would-be superstars.

honestly i didn't really get into ff7 that much myself (cloud didn't even care, he just wanted to fight seph the whole time and saving the world was a bonus to him basically) =\ or ff8 (squall was too moody) i loved ff9 tho =) wish i could find one again cause my disks suddenly became scratched ._. brought them to a place to clean them, wasted like 10-15$ and they still didn't work =\ the first disk is messed up so i can't play it over since it keeps freezing in the opening movie that i can't skip =O argh. anywayz, and i didn't think ff12 was too bad =\ ff10 just did horrible and 10-2.............. so anywayz. FFv13>FF13 we already know. and honestly i agree with the other people who said that it wouldn't be as big a hit on the ps3 as ps1, but then again i'm 100% it would make tons of money, because of the fame it has. and knight, dude O_o you need to chill, for one thing, i doubt anyone will join you in your boycott of ff13, well i might join you XD but that's only cuz i'm buying versus and not 13 lol, but yeah i mean it's not like they said "We're making a remake on the ps3 =) wait for it" at all. yes they said it for ps2 but not ps3, people are just rumoring it all, just because you want something doesn't mean they HAVE to make it.

on an off-topic note =O wouldn't it be amazingly awsome, if all this time, SE has been saying the trailers and stuff for FF13 and FFv13 were pre-rendered cgi trailers and stuff >_> but were actually gameplay for the game, kinda like mgs cutscenes? lol that would be awsome

Is any body other than myself really surprised ? Im really not, i want FFVII as much as everyone else but i knew it wasn't going to happen ANY time soon.
PSX, its funny how you guys say you're tired of being disappointed and let down when you participated in raising and subsequently destroying every RPG lovers hopes with that April Fools prank.
Its sweet Justice it seems, you ought to know how it feels like now.
In any event i dont care too much about FFVII, square is clearly too stupid to make a remake. As such in terms of RPGs ive moved on, what i really want from square is an FF game along the lines of FFXI. PS3 could totally support that type of community/game and the complete and utter customization could only serve to make the game even more amazing; choosing race, skilset, etc.

50 days logged on FFXI for the year I played it.
The BEST MMO experience I've ever had, and I've tried a lot of them (even WoW)...
FFXI stood on its own, and like you said Xanavi, the customization was endless. No other FF lets you customize your race, height, etc. Plus, you could have as many characters as you wanted! I'm getting sick of single player FFs, there's too many! MORE MMOS! Don't be afraid to try something different! After 12 similarly designed (game mechanics, abilities, etc) single-player games, you'd think they might think about it...yeah right!
Don't worry Xanavi, hopefully we'll have another company to deliver this experience on the PS3 sometime soon (or if SE ever wants to try it again).

We can only hope that somebody gives us that kind of MMOS game. PS3 is FULLY ready to support every aspect of it, its a natural choice for any Developer that wants to stand out in the Genre.

Why release a "tech demo" of the beginning of FF 7? Why include that FMV at the end of Crisis Core with the "to be continued"? I just think getting our hopes up for a remake so soon is pointless. If its going to get done, I'd much rather have it towards the end of the life cycle of the ps3 to use the full power of the ps3. Plus, look at all the projects SE has going right now. It's insane to think they have this mystery project going at the same time. My dream will never die. I'll just wait, wait patiently!

I remember seeing a forum post in which someone rearranged the letters of the dkwhatever secret thing so that it says ff7 remake. I think the remake may happen but these rumors are killing me on the inside.

Then why not just rerelease the original FFVII? Or even if they released it with FFVII, FFIII and FFIX on bluray with additional content or something. It would sell like hotcakes.

A remake would make sense, all of the other ones they're doing. I mean, I just bought FF IV the other day, and FF V should be just around the corner. My main question is, why are we so concerned with VII and not the other potential remakes?

This is coming from someone who has played Final Fantasy 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,X-2,12.. me..
I loved all of them but 7,8,9,10 and 12 stood out as the best.
FF7 does not need to be remade, its already compatible with ALL ps3s including my 40GB.
It would slow down their other projects..
However, I now wonder why they made a trailer for it....

I kinda want them to make a remake, or a sequel. I've only played a little part of the 1st disc of FF7, but i've watched Advent Children and i'm playing Crisis Core. It would be nice to play the original game.

It depends, some people want it, some don't. As for me, I am really apathetic towards this. I neither want it or don't want it. It doesn't really matter to me. But one thing that is for sure: if they do have one in the making, make it great. I don't want a half-effort job from SE. Either make it great or don't make it at all. I do hope that people who want it will get it eventually but don't get your hopes up. It may never happen. My guess is that they are still considering it, but in terms of PR, they just don't want to get people's hopes up. Since, if they say they are having plans on making this, people EXPECT it to be happening and the game will be great. If they keep denying that, people will not get their hopes up but if they happen to change plans and get a great game out, people will be surprised instead of disgruntled. So in terms of PR, that's the right thing to do.

If you have been paying close attention to the recent release of; Dirge of Cerebus (DOC), and Crisis Core, there are subtle overtones(hints)and dialogue that suggests indirectly that there will be a sequel to FF7. Example, in the ending of DOC, Genisis cleary reappears for his brother Weis after the battle with Chaos, and then states, "there is much work to be done". I think personally that they have to set up the sequel with a prequel in order to introduce characters (Example:Genisis) for FF7-2. If I am wrong, I am open to opinions!
