Rumor: Dark Knight Game GTA Style?

The situation regarding a video game based on "The Dark Knight" is slightly confusing: unlike most other games based on movies that release right around the time of the film, we have no game for the latest Batman movie. However, actor Gary Oldman confirmed its existence in an interview last month, and now we're just wondering: what kind of game will this be, and when will it arrive?

We're still not sure about the latter, but rumors are starting to pop up about the type of gameplay we can expect. According to a rumor reported on by Kotaku, the ever-popular Grand Theft Auto sandbox style may be coming our way, as the Dark Knight may seek to take a bite out of crime in a free-roaming city. Batman has plenty of cool gadgets and vehicles at his disposal so the idea should work out just fine, but it's a theme that seems to be popping up in a lot of superhero games... If this information is true, we'll be looking for more in the way of true freedom and yes, if we can use that Batmobile out on the open streets of Gotham, it'll impress us. Hopefully, whoever is handling this game will hand out some details soon, although we may have some time to wait. Oldman hinted that we could probably expect the title to arrive at about the time the movie comes out to buy on Blu-Ray.

Given all this extra time, a GTA-style Batman could be absolutely awesome. Let's just hope that the developers are using the time to make a game that lives up to the quality of the movie.

I'm suprised they didn't release this at the same time as the movie and cashed in on it.

well they stand to make more money if they can make a game that truely lives up to the batman name in every respect, if they can make the fans salivate and piss themselves with anticipation then its worth it. im not a batman fan though, im more excited about star trek online.

Going for simultaneous release, that always ruins the game. Pushes the deadline too much.

Of course, but movie games lately have tried meeting the deadline and been crap as a result. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad they're putting more effort into it. I just think the hype will of died down quiet a lot by the time this is released, and maybe that will hurt sales. Just don't do an Enter the Matrix.

they could spend the extra time on this game hopefully making at least half as good as the movie and that's an accomplishment...hopefully its not another horrible game based on a movie we all know about 95%of these types of games end up terrible

Yeah lets hope if they do attempt a game it's not just for the money. A sandbox style Batman game would be friggin amazing if they put the time, effort, and care into it.

lol i just envisioned the batmobile prowling down predestians down a street. Isnt it a bit late for a batman game? most movie games are released just before the film reaches the cinema.

What could be better than running around Gotham as the caped crusader doing side missions and unlocking new bat toys, areas, and living the double life as Bruce Wayne. If done right it could be immersive and one of the best games ever.
Movie license games have a tendency to be rushed and have no artistic vision, lets hope whom ever produces this takes it by the cajones and makes a kick ass game.

Hmm, not sure if I like this idea. Batman's always focused on his mission and doesnt deter. Plus why would Batman be just roaming the streets? This style of play can be implemented to many themes and scenarios but just cuz its fun doesnt mean it suits the dark knight. As long as they dont give you time to just drive around aimlessly but always heading to a target then it may work. Otherwise, sounds like a corporate decision. "Ppl love GTA, ppl love Batman, why not combine them?? Gold!"

Skwidd, you sound like a Batman purist.

But, if you really think about it, Batman has to roam around the streets at night to clean them up and find the scum. I'm sure he doesn't just come out to see Gordon when the bat signal is out.

Not really a purist at all. I like the character and enjoyed Frank Miller's Dark Knight. It was just an obvious observation. To me Batman doesnt deal with random street thugs unless they're part of a bigger agenda. Mind you, he would kick their ass on his way back to the batcave, but the hoodlum fighting seems more of a spiderman thing. I also like Spiderman and am not disrespecting him with that said :)I never enjoyed GTA so who am I to judge..
