Eidos, Warner Officially Announce Batman: Arkham Asylum
Update: Just so you all know, this certainly isn't the game based on "The Dark Knight" movie. Some sources were confused on this, so we weren't sure what to believe, but the official word is that this is a different Batman game.
Original Story:
Well, that's a little ironic. On the same day we report on the rumor that a video game based on "The Dark Knight" will present an open-world Grand Theft Auto-style format, we learn of the title's official announcement. At least, we assume this is the Batman game based - perhaps only loosely - on the movie.
According to WorthPlaying, Eidos and Warner Bros. Interactive have revealed Batman: Arkham Asylum, a third-person action/adventure game that utilizes the popular Unreal Engine 3. It will feature a "dark and gritty setting reminiscent of Bioshock," and the game begins with Batman delivering the freshly captured Joker to Arkham Asylum. But after the dark knight is ambushed at the asylum, everything opens up into "an immersive combat gaming experience." We'll get a quality script from Emmy Award-winning Batman writer Paul Dini, and that's certainly good news from a story standpoint.
"In Batman: Arkham Asylum Eidos and Warner Bros. are building a true action adventure game experience worthy of gamers and fans," said Phil Rogers, CEO of Eidos Interactive. "Players become Batman, like he has never been seen before in a video game, as he fights through intense circumstances in Arkham Asylum utilizing his intuitive detective skills and aggressive melee attacks."
As for Warner's statement on the announcement, here's what President Martin Tremblay had to say-
"Batman: Arkham Asylum offers players the chance to battle Gotham's worst villains with Batman's physical and psychological strength in a graphically distinct and story-driven game. We look forward to working with Eidos on expanding DC Comics' world-renowned character Batman in the game space with a noticeably different feature set in an incredibly dark interactive environment."
Batman: Arkham Asylum is scheduled to arrive for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC in all territories some time next year. For the record, Eidos and Warner will publish the title together; Eidos will handle the development duties. We'll be sure to bring you more on this one as it becomes available.

...And regardless of popular public opinion, the one from the animated series on the PS2 ROCKED. I do agree that Bioshock, while a fabulous game, wasn't 'sand-boxy' at all. More like rail driven with a lot of back tracking.

Batman: Arkham Asylum isn't based at ALL on the Dark Knight film. While it has more in common with the comics version of Batman, it has the freedom of not being based on any previous materials or sources and is a completely original story on its own. It's been described as being closer to Bioshock, Castlevania and Super Metroid than any GTA-styled game. It takes place in completely, from what I read, in Arkham Asylum which means about 90% of Batman's villains are in the game (the two I saw were the Joker and Killer Croc) and have all been designed -- somewhat -- from the ground up by the fine folks at WildStorm Productions just for the game. Croc looks NOTHING like he normally does and is quite scary looking.
The game's play system is divided into Batman's martial arts prowess, his ability to intimidate and scare the crap out of criminals, as well as being a detective.
The game was featured in this month's Game Informer as the cover article, if you're looking for screen shots and the like. :)

Pandemic is supposedly working on The Dark Knight game. It is rumored to actually take place after the movie though. Pandemic has apparently run into an problems that make the game just plain bad. The dominating theory is that the combat is messed up. So don't expect any announcement on this game for a while still.

And if Heath Ledger didn't die, this game probly could've been used as inspiration for a third movie.
