NPD July 08 System Sales: PS3 Still Above X360

So, we've now passed the half-year mark for 2008, and one critical element has yet to change in the sales of videogame hardware: the Xbox 360 has yet to outsell the PlayStation 3 this year. For the seventh straight month, the PlayStation 3's momentum continues as the system outsold the Xbox 360 by 20k units. Sony's PS3 took in 225k sold, and the PSP followed closely with 222k sold. The Xbox 360 trails in the distance with 205k, and the PlayStation 2 continues to stay alive with 155k.

The behemoths that are the Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii are still leading the pack, as both units continue to appeal to an audience far more casual than that of the PS3 and X360. The DS sold another 608k handhelds, and the Wii moved 555k. Below are the hardware numbers in order.

July 2008:
Nintendo DS 608k
Nintendo Wii 555k
Sony PS3 225k
Sony PSP 222k
Xbox 360 205k
Sony PS2 155k

It's definately passed the dark days that gloomed when the PS3 first started. The more players on online the merrier and I couldn't be happier with my 60gb PS3.

Oh just wait till August through December of this year, not only the PS3 sales will even grow higher, the PSP will demolish the 222K for this month.

Star Ocean: First Depature
Star Ocean: Second Evolution
DISSIDIA: Final Fantasy

So far those are the three games that'll be coming soon, DISSIDIA should be out early next year or before the summer of next year.

Sony will catch up and surpass, and may do it by the end of the year. Mid next year is a given at this rate... what really amazes me is why the WII and DS are so popular, I still cannot understand the dynamics behind it... is it down to the quirky games and controller? Or, is it really down to price in the end... it boggles the mind!

Poor Wii. It's spark is dying out fast. But then agian, they did manage to sell a shitload. The way I see... Ofcourse the PS3 is going to come out on top when the dust settles, the Nintendo DS is going to come in second, then the Wii, then the PSP, and then tht thing... oh yea, Xbox 360.

Now... If you will excuse me... my bed is calling to me. It speaks with a very sexy voice "Come sleep on me"

im always shocked to see how the nintendo DS still sells so many systems. I like it but my shoulder buttons are broken and i really dont wanna shell out the cash to get a new one, id rather get a psp instead ( yup, still no psp ). I wish i knew someone that could fix my shoulder buttons

I have to agree with Shindelion here. You should really pick one up! You are missing out on Monster Hunter, Crisis Core, Star Ocean, Final Fantasy Tactics, etc. Not to mention the other RPG's that are coming out for it. Wierdly enough, the Psp has in a way become the RPG system of this generation. HOPEFULLY that will change as the years pass and the PS3 matures!

PS3 being outsold by the 360 in Japan?!? Thats impossible! Altho...when the Square enix exclusives for the 360 come out then I can see that they might outsell them for that period. But I don't think any of them are for sale at this point so...NO WAY JOSE!

I believe that Tales of Vesperia is the reason why there was that boost in XBox sales in Japan. Apparently there was even a line outside a store for that game! Crazy ay?

This is true. The X360 saw a big release with Tales of Vesperia, which gave it a spike in sales. It'll be back down to nothing next week.

I don't get it. How can people be still buying the wii when they said there not coming out with any holiday titles this year. The wii is basically done for 08 there are no suprises none. I guess people think thats the easy way out, buying there kids a cheap next gen system
and be done with it. Thats why the number is so high even after people knowing its not coming out with anything good for the remainder of the year, and we're only half way there. Let that be ps3 saying there not coming out with anything good for the rest of the year.

I know that the PS3 will eventually outsell the 360, what I'm asking is if you still believe it will catch up in 11 months?

You were more than sure about it a while back, and argued with an exlusives list and touting a God of War III release date of early 2009.

I still don't believe it will in such short time.

Nintendo still have tv ads for old games for the wii because there is no new games for the system to create ads for. Maybe there's a billionaire nintendo fan that buys hundreds of thousands~?

LittleBigPlanet will sell so many ps3s that it'll definitely change the whole outlook of ps3 VS 360.

Metal Gear Solid 4 has done so much in pushing the ps3. Something which needs to be talked on more.

Can't wait for the holidays.
