GC 2008: 160GB PS3 Announced For PAL Territories
At E3 last month, Sony revealed the new PlayStation 3 model that would replace the current "default" 40GB model. The new 80GB machine would feature similar specs to the 40GB version, with the obvious difference that it has a bigger hard drive. But Sony saved one final PS3 hardware announcement for the Leipzig Games Convention today.
First of all, we should probably tell you that as of the end of this week (Friday), the new 80GB PS3 will become available in all PAL territories for the price of 399 Euros. According to recent retail information here in the U.S., this means Euro gamers might actually be getting this system a few days before us; Sony Style will ship their pre-ordered 80GB PS3s on September 1. But now, the big news: during Sony's press conference, it was revealed that a new 160GB PS3 - with the same specs as the recently unveiled 80GB model - will be coming for the price of 449 Euros, plus it will feature 70 Euros worth of downloadable game content! Sweet, no? Of course, all you American gamers out there are wondering if this bulked-up PS3 will make the trip across the pond and all we have to say is...well, we hope so.
We can't see any reason why it shouldn't arrive in other regions, but you have to remember that Europe did have plenty of PS3 packages that were exclusive to PAL regions. However, we're talking about a whole new PS3, here; not just a promotional package that includes the same hardware as other territories. As soon as it's confirmed that the U.S. in getting this behemoth 160GB machine, we'll be sure to let you know.
