GC 2008: 160GB PS3 Announced For PAL Territories

At E3 last month, Sony revealed the new PlayStation 3 model that would replace the current "default" 40GB model. The new 80GB machine would feature similar specs to the 40GB version, with the obvious difference that it has a bigger hard drive. But Sony saved one final PS3 hardware announcement for the Leipzig Games Convention today.

First of all, we should probably tell you that as of the end of this week (Friday), the new 80GB PS3 will become available in all PAL territories for the price of 399 Euros. According to recent retail information here in the U.S., this means Euro gamers might actually be getting this system a few days before us; Sony Style will ship their pre-ordered 80GB PS3s on September 1. But now, the big news: during Sony's press conference, it was revealed that a new 160GB PS3 - with the same specs as the recently unveiled 80GB model - will be coming for the price of 449 Euros, plus it will feature 70 Euros worth of downloadable game content! Sweet, no? Of course, all you American gamers out there are wondering if this bulked-up PS3 will make the trip across the pond and all we have to say is...well, we hope so.

We can't see any reason why it shouldn't arrive in other regions, but you have to remember that Europe did have plenty of PS3 packages that were exclusive to PAL regions. However, we're talking about a whole new PS3, here; not just a promotional package that includes the same hardware as other territories. As soon as it's confirmed that the U.S. in getting this behemoth 160GB machine, we'll be sure to let you know.

sweet so I'm guessing that if/when this model is released in the states it'll be 450 usd. since the 40 gb is 400 euros and the 160 gb is 50 more euros. or maybe it'll be more since our currencies are different.

you say that like europe gets great deals, you guys get the 80gb anyway which has backwards compat which we haven't had for ages because it was discontinued here, plus its the hardware software bc. So don't complain that we get the 160gb machine when in all fairness i would prefer the American 80gb.

I picked up the new 80 gig that replaced the 40 gig. It was quietly released on Monday. It's nice but it doesn't play PS2 games. I had a 60 gig but the BluRay laser went out in it. Hopefully this new model features backwards compatibility.

Now you tell me PS4 is comin, when clearly SONY want to make the most out of PS3,i can see PS4 is not even thought about,MS will have to wait and lose this generation before they release their so-called 720.

They have thought about it and probably have experimental specifications down already, they could easily produce a PS4 now if they want to... a 16 core Cell, the hottest NVidia graphics hardware... but they don't. Sony have their future plans to maximise profit before the next cycle begins. The black horse is the new XBOX Microsoft may release and surprise the markets... that may take Sony off guard, hence the fact that they already would have plans for PS4 well in advanced... or at least have a good idea of where they would go with it.

Why have the hottest Nvidia now when the PS4 can have the hottest nvidia in 5 years time or when ever?

I'm sure Sony is thinking about the ps4...it takes quite a long time to develop a console.

I beg to differ, I think their plans are well advanced and they have a good idea of the technologies they would use and include in a PS4. It would not make business sense to sit on ones laurals and wait for MS or any other company, maybe even Apple, to come in and introduce something new, something outstanding that would take Sony off guard. I am sure they have contigency plans on the side lines should something drastic happen in the market place... maybe the first weapon would be to protect their market would be slash prices by half to fend off any competition, even taking a total loss for a while on hardware (even after cost cutting) in order to protect their markets!
