GC 2008: Heavy Rain Demo Coming, DLC Possible

It's the talk of the town. The official announcement came yesterday, we scrounged up more gameplay details today, and now, just in case you're still on the fence about this one, a demo will be headed our way.

According to Eurogamer, Quantic Dream founder and Heavy Rain director David Cage confirmed a playable demo will eventually come to the PlayStation Store. Very simply, he said- "Yes, of course, there will be a demo." However, due to the story-based gameplay, the studio must figure out a way to deliver a demo without spoiling any of the plot ahead of time. Cage added:

"We need to think about it, but I wouldn't want to spoil the story. We've spent a lot of time working on the story this time; we've worked with people from Hollywood, script writers, to really make it just right. And I think it's a very unusual story for a videogame, so I think people will be quite surprised."

As for downloadable content, Cage didn't confirm that but did hint at the possibility some time down the road. In this generation, gamers are always looking for demos, added freedom in terms of gameplay, and of course, extras to enhance the gameplay experience. This usually comes courtesy of downloadable content, but again, it could be tricky to figure out what kind of DLC Quantic could prepare for Heavy Rain.

"This is something it's really too early to talk about, but it's definitely a possibility," said Cage. "There's so many possibilities with this thing, because what matters now is just the story you want to tell. Do you have a good story to tell? Then you can do it, because this thing isn't specific to the series. You can tell any story with this interface, because it's entirely contextual."

Heavy Rain is scheduled to arrive some time next year, so perhaps we can hope for the demo in early 2009...? We'll keep you posted.

Who cares about DLC at this point in time. It's like if people nowadays ask about multiplayer and DLC before they even know the full details of a game.

a new genre of game. Can we call it the first true FPS (FIRST PERSON STORY) game :) This might just be the closest thing to feeling like your IN the game then we ever did before. I wonder if the shoulder buttons will act as SHOULDER buttons and if Square will be left hand/arm O-right hand/arm Triangle-Head X-Feet and depending on what combination of buttons you push will vary on what you do. Lol I guess this game is going to build up alot of hype

You know I think a very good thing to do with downloadable content is let people make their own stories to be played through, like the new Far Cry 2 map editor. Allow something where you can use any dialogue the character has used in game, and allow them to build their own environments or something. It would have unlimited potential. Maybe even keep adding more dialogue and stuff as further downloadable content.

I watched the game play video and I don't really know if that the way to go. To me it looks like a HD Dragons Lair. I hope it has more intuitive controls than what the game play video shows. But with the developer who brought us Indigo Prophecy the story should be good.

I know its NEW and NEW is SCARY but how come when there is a NEW FRESH IDEA for a game...we're quick to say "oh its gonna be crappy, all graphics,no gameplay" yada yada yada, its not even complete! Maybe it'll completely pull a FFVII reaction and 10 years from now we'll say "When are they going to remake HEAVY RAIN, with next gen stuff" Are we just so used to playing the same stuff that we get weirded out by something that isn't "normal"

^Agreed. If we're skeptical and give doubts and be suspicious, well its not encouraging.. Do you want to see more first person shooters? Okay, I love them too, but I am hungry for new titles and games that would push the medium forward. Remember having our minds blown by Super Mario Bros when it first came about? Well, I want something similarly completely fresh. We should embrace new ideas and not scare them away. Potential for 'different' is only a good thing. Worst thing, it can be an example of what else can be done and some other studio can take the idea and refine it. We win.

ok well as far as graphics go this game looks pretty gud, other than that this sound like a rediculous game, why would you wanna play a game to control only the head and shoulders of a person when you can go watch a movie like "wanted" and get all the supposed action this game has to offer while moving your own head and shoulders? no idea why theres so much hype to this game but hey this is only my opinion i could be terribly wrong :) lets just hope i am
