Network Down For Maintenance, Home Or PlayStation Life Related?

Update: Ooookay, update 2.  We've seen multiple e-mails and multiple sources now, gathered in from seemingly all corners of the 'Net, and NONE of them seem to gel.  The Network is down now, but we don't know why, and it's not just for MGO.  Or maybe it is.  Maybe it's different outside the U.S.  We're so CONFUSED.  But we'll keep you updated; it's what we do. ;)

You can file all of this under speculation and rumor, but at the very least, it's intriguing speculation and rumor. Who cares if it's boring, right?

According to FeedOnPlayStation and verified over at the Metal Gear Online official site, the PlayStation Network will be down for maintenance today between 8:00 and 13:00 a.m. PDT. Now, the only real information we have is the simple explanation regarding this maintenance, although it includes no details:

"Maintenance will be undertaken on the PLAYSTATION(R) NETWORK between August 26th 16:00-21:00 (BST). During these times, customers may be momentarily unable to connect to the PLAYSTATION(R) Network."

Now, we've checked the official PlayStation blog and can't find any explanation there, which means the speculation has already started to run rampant. The two things that keep popping up in discussion is PlayStation Life (which seems to have disappeared in recent weeks since the announcement) and the extended PlayStation Home beta. We know for a fact that both should be coming at some point, but we've seen e-mail evidence that says the expanded beta already kicked off a couple weeks ago on August 14. Therefore, we're leaning more towards the PlayStation Life idea, simply because it's a little late and now should be the time. Either that, or is this is just another stability update that is mostly innocuous and not worth mentioning. But then again, that's not exactly newsworthy and really...not much fun.

We assume Sony will clear this up at some point today, just because they're usually pretty quick about clarifying rumors pertaining to scheduled maintenance. As soon as we learn the truth, we'll let ya know.
