Blizzard: No WoW For Consoles, "Square Peg In A Round Hole"

Ever since World of Warcraft released back in 2005, console gamers everywhere have been wondering if Blizzard would ever deliver the addictive MMO to their favorite home entertainment system. The clamor rose when the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 arrived, but Blizzard has recently clarified - again - that the chances of WoW coming to either console are very slim.

According to Videogamer, this has nothing to do with a Valve-like bias; Blizzard "has nothing against consoles," and the concept of WoW on a console is just a "square peg round hole thing." As most of you are well aware, the MMO on PC consists of a whole lot of pointing and clicking; something you really can't do with a gamepad, regardless of how powerful the hardware is. Furthermore, this news falls in line with what Blizzard executive vice-president of product development and co-founder Frank Pearce said about Starcraft 2. He basically said the chances of it coming to consoles were "very close to zero." Lastly, when production director of Wrath of the Lich King, J. Allen Brack, spoke at Leipzig last week, it was more of the same:

"World of Warcraft is designed as a PC game. It's designed to have a keyboard and a mouse. So the controls and the control scheme that you have are very PC centric. If you think about mapping those controls and all those different type of buttons that you have to a console without a keyboard for chatting, it's a very challenging proposition.

It's really not that we have anything against consoles. I mean we love console games also. And I'm sure there will be a successful MMO sometime on a console. So it has nothing to do with that. It's just more like a square peg round hole thing for our game. It just wasn't designed with that in mind."

We'll buy some of that, although we're fairly certain there have been successful MMOs on consoles already, although probably not to the success level exhibited by WoW. Furthermore, with Sony Online Entertainment preparing all sorts of online MMOs like The Agency, M.A.G., FreeRealms, and more, it's just another genre the PC no longer has a stranglehold on. But as for Blizzard's stuff coming to PS3 or 360? Yeah, not likely. Sorry.

I am sorry, that is a poor excuse... a good portion of PS3 users have keyboards at least. For God's sake, if you can bundle freaking band equipment with a game, why can't Blizzard bundle a keyboard and mouse with the game... that is if they honestly feel there is an appetite for such a game amongst the console owning community...

I am sure it would be a success... if they really wanted it to be...

There have been other pc games that have been brought over to the console, Baldar's Gate to name one, and it was a great game. Bllizzard is just afraid if they brought it over they might find out that the pc is NOT the gameing machine it once was.And that the PS3 rules

Im sorry but I agree I dont think bringing WoW to the PS3 would be a good idea, and this is coming from someone who played it for over a year. It just wouldnt work with a controller, and whats the point of bundling it with a mouse and keyboard when it doesnt require a very good computer to play it already? you can go spend $400 on a desktop and play it just fine.

I say if they did bundle it with mouse and keyboard it would be just as good as the PC version no doubt and for WoW they can just set up payments through the PSN for the Monthly Fes.The only reason they wont is because games like WoW, Crysis, Starcraft, and Guild Wars hold the PC platform above sure Doom, because when you think about it, if WoW was availiable on PS3 almost all of Blizzards 8 million customers would migrate to consules, Thus forcing them to learn Programing for PS3 and 360(which will cost them alot to hire people to do) As you know development on Game Systems isnt cheap.Blizzard has been able to sit on there buts and use the same programers year after year without having to worry about "Consule Wars" or "Exclusives" and collect MASS! profit from the subcriptions to WoW.

stay away from WoW, its' very addicting. i've wasted a year and a half on it, leaving tons of RPG games behind me ... but the good thing is i beat down kael'thus and was one of the persons who protected the MT (was the OT).
