DMC Creator Wants Bayonetta To "Exceed" God Of War 3

Are you a big fan of the critically acclaimed and massively popular Devil May Cry series? Were you one of the many who enjoyed this year's fourth installment? Then it is now your duty to pay close attention to what the franchise's creator has to say about his new project: Bayonetta.

Hideki Kamiya's expectations for the game are high, because during an interview with EGM, he said he wants to "make a game that exceeds" God of War 3. Most are anxiously anticipating the new GoW, and just about every industry critic fully believes it will be downright fantastic. But can Bayonetta really compete? Well, Kamiya has certainly done his homework on the genre at hand:

"Out of all those action titles, there's one game that I am paying really close attention to, that I think is a rival game, a good game, which is called God of War 3. So there's like a wall for your imagination or ideas, and when you're actually creating something, you don't even see the wall. But with GOW, I felt like I saw beyond the wall. I felt like they created the game in a very good way which managed to bring in the users, they gave you a huge impactful feeling right in the beginning, and just drew you into the game. So I'm very impressed that they made the game like that."

At the same time, Kamiya isn't quite as impressed with Tecmo's Ninja Gaiden series, but that's mostly because he never played the games. Still, he makes a point of saying that "the quality that gets you interested in something is that you feel something for them." As far as he's concerned, NG "just didn't have the power" to do that, which is why he wasn't interested. There's no doubt that the production value and presentation of GoW is always insane, and it seems we'll be getting that level of polish with Bayonetta if Kamiya has his way.

If you head over to the game's official site, you'll see some baseline intro information, along with an exceedingly bloody teaser trailer where a woman (at least, we assume it's a woman, what with that high heel in the last shot there) absolutely decimates what appears to be a fallen angel of some kind with a hail of bullets. ...could this be our next PSXE Spotlight? Damn, we're intrigued.

........ lmao. something to exceed God of War 3? I'll keep my mouth shut.

Btw Gaiden sucked ass, a piece of garbage that piled dust in my room. Played it because of the graphics, as soon as I got my hands on Heavenly Sword it dragged me away from it. More freedom, easier to control and better gameplay. Gaiden was a waste of my time and money and so I sold it back.

I like this. Regardless of whether or not he reaches that goal, it's awesome to see a new level of competition between developers, 'cause it means WE are going to benefit from it.

As for Ninja Gaiden, I couldn't get into it on three separate occasions. First with NG, then again with NG Black, and once again with Sigma. The story wasn't interesting, and it didn't pull me through the gameplay near well enough to warrant me sitting in front of the screen long enough to finish it. The Devil May Cry games were the same way, though, so... haha. I prefer games that have a nice plot as well as a narrative that pushes that plot from beginning to end. God of War went far and beyond my expectations in that matter, so I'd love to see games *compete* with it, or try to, rather than follow in its footsteps like the Conan game did.

Ramble ramble.

@madpower I couldn't agree with u more. I love the competetion between developers. Cause we are the winners. I wish football could say the same, but that's another subject.

I am willing to give this game a try just based off his comment.

Ninja Gaiden sucks, period. What more, the creator of Ninja Gaiden chickened out on the Ps3 and claimed 360 is easier to use. It is, yes, sure. But I wonder how long he is going to last in the market for the next generation consoles. And the gameplay? Characters? Come on man ... the game sucks. The game can't even take the crown off of God of War III.

GoW III is gonna blast everything down. -evil laughs-

When a developer isn't even opened-minded to give credit where it is due and to acknowledge quality, I really wonder if he is open-minded enough to produce quality, himself. Moreover, I'm not sure how innovative he can be when he already has an existing game in mind, either for exemplifying or competition.
But really, what he said I think is just a way to cast marketing attention to his future product...

Btw, NG's have never been as cinematic as GOW's or DMC's, but they've always had the deepest gameplay.

No, not really. DMC3's combat far exceeded the depth in NG. And only the combat was deeper than GoW; I wouldn't say the gameplay as a whole was deeper. GoW includes far more in the way of diversity (platforming, puzzles, better story, etc.).

I wouldn't be surprised if it exceeds GOW because Nero's aggresiveness in DMC 4 is soooooo CRAZY! as he says when performin combos.
Nero vs Kratos, who wins?i don't know, but if this bayonetta protagonist can exceed Nero then am sorry Kratos must hit the gym......lol

Just started playing NG:S and I like it a lot so far, as long as I play it on easy. I suck at this game so much... But yeah, NG does not compare at all to GoW. The gameplay is great but the story seems so pointless so far.

As for "DMC Creator Wants Bayonetta To 'Exceed' God Of War 3" ... haha! No but the trailer does look pretty sweet. I never even heard of this game before... I think.

At the risk of sounding too fanboyish, and therefore being invalidated, this is my last comment on NG. If you, like most, casually enjoy action-adventure beat'um ups, then ofcourse you will like GOW because of it's dramatic story-telling and cinematic presentation. But if you're all about sophisticated enemy ai, enemy variety, challenging (but not cheap) difficulty level, and replay value: NG is the better one in that department. Those who understand, have understood, and those who disagree are entitled to not understanding. Btw, remember to play Sigma in 720p, if not 1080p. It's a stunner.

Ben, DMC3se is my personal favorite action adventure of all time. However, even I must admit that the action/gameplay in that (not to be outdone by dmc4) was surpassed by NG2, if not by Black/Sigma, as well. Regarding GOW, i completely forgot about those crank/gear puzzles. While certainly, cool, they don't really add as much to lasting appeal of a game, as deep fighting mechanic, sophisticated ai, and enemy variety. Once you beat them in one difficulty, they just feel like a waste of time in the next. Really, I enjoyed both dmc and gow more than ng, on the first plays, because of cinematics, but over time, ng remained on top in terms of continued play. Believe, me if dmc4 was even comparable, I wouldn't have bought a 360 just for ng2.

My stance on this game being better than GoW is wait and see. I hope it is better than to previous two installments of GoW but only time will tell. Anyways competition between developers is definitely a good thing. I can't wait. Plus she definitely better to look than Kratos.

GoW franchise does what it does well. No offense but you kinda sound like those type of gamers that hate on the flavor of the month to "stand out" and gain some type of elite status.

You need to play GoW 1 and 2. The game itself presents very tough bosses and awesome storyline. The game that you played on the PSP was the prequel to the first two games. You need to do more research on GoW. I was just like you, never really cared about GoW series at all and when I got my PSP to get my hands on FF VII: Crisis Core ... one of the store employees got me interested in GoW and told me alot about it claiming that it was the first game to ever use the "button sequence" system and other games started to copy off of it. It featured very powerful bosses and other cool features. All in all, I have to yet play GoW1 and GoW2 ... he told me the PSP version is nothing compared to 1 and 2 so I trust his words and plus if you are going to buy 3 ... then you have to play 1 and 2 to understand whats going on, if you care about the storyline, and to see how the bosses are. =)

Just 2 months before GoW III comes out, I'll buy 1 and 2 and beat them.

About chains of olympus: it was short (understandably because of dmd limitation), but every bit as good as the first. Plus, the huge gauntlet rocked way more than the sword or mallet of the 2nd. And it was every bit as cinematic as the previous (or proceeding) two. It was one of those games on the psp, (provided you have headphones on) that made you forget you were playing on a handheld. However in terms of look and feel, GOW 2 was virtually next-gen quality. Just compare it to the likes of Conan, or even DMC4, and you'll see what I mean.

And about Bayonetta, I don't pass judgement before playing. However, the draw and undeniable stylish appeal of DMC1, was that it was completely original and fresh. And it did that almost like it wasn't even trying. The history of it says that it was suppose to be a resident evil installation, that took a change in design evolution due to a bug of enemies "being juggled" on gunfire. Let's hope lightening strikes twice.
But, i never have been able to understand the notion of playing as scantily clad dressed in SM heroine, that seems to be in some games. Maybe it is a continually failed attempt at winning over female consumers, or a manifestation of latent transvestism in some. And if saying that makes me a chauvinist or politically incorrect, so be it. I only exercise diplomacy when I have to.

Well, I guess. I just don't think, despite the large number of combos in NG2, that it can compare to the multiple stances available in DMC3, plus the fact one can change between weapons on the fly. It just seemed to be a more far-reaching and diverse combat system, one that wasn't limited to certain combos with certain weapons, but one that implemented everything with...well, everything.

devil may cry 3(include special edition) is all bout STYLISH, i can allow myself to do crap bout other areas(time, damage etc.)but its not an option for me to get anything apart from "s" for my stylish part, dunno why though. @aftab, i'never played NG series n iwould like to give it a try though, but i've definitely gone through DMC3se more than 6 times at least, after i finis the game, played through it in heaven or hell mode, then dante must die, then spend another 30 hours to master every possible combos(which seems endless btw, tats how hardcore i am), and go through the game again, then after tat i got the super dante n go through the bloody palace(took me 4 hours) to get the ultimate dante. after all tat, i used vergil, did exactly the same with dante(go through in different difficulties n practice combos), i personally find its harder to rack up the stylish points using vergil but in return his attacks are really strong(beowulf ftw), for tat reason i always prefer dante :) i guess DMCse is for the hardcore action players :)

Cheng, DMC3se was a rerelease with fans/hardcore gamers in mind, but was toned down in difficulty from DMC3. So they brought Vergil back for everyone, and reduced the difficulty for the sake of the CASUAL gamers. It still is my favorite action-adventure of all time.

To Ben, again, I concur that the diversity or variety of combos adds to style, but not necessarily to substance or depth, unless the diversity of combos actually is critical to the conquering of the enemy, as opposed to just racking up an "SSS" rank. For example, the blocking/countering of Royal Guard, though cool, was not critical, because you could dodge an enenmy attack even more easily. In other games, knowing when to block, counter, or dodge will make the difference between life and death, or success and failure. Therefore, in those cases, that is an actual added dimension of depth, that is critical enough to influence the gameplay. Throw a fresh roster of enemies, with increasingly tenacious ai for each difficulty level, and it really feels like you're playing an new game each time.
