NPD Aug. 08: Xbox 360 Edges Out PlayStation 3 in Sales?

All great things must come to an end eventually, as after a seven month reign over the Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3 has finally been outsold by its rival by 10k units: 195k to 185k. Although to Sony's credit, the PlayStation 3 had a rather poor line-up of games in August, with Madden and SoulCalibur IV being just about the only things worthy of mentioning. Where as Microsoft at least had Too Human, proving again that games will ultimately decide the victor of this generation. Stll, what's impressive is that the PlayStation 3 still costs considerably more than the X360, and yet despite that, continues to give Microsoft a lot of trouble.

Overall, August was a slower month in terms of hardware sales, as nearly every console sold considerably less than July. That is to say, every console excluding the PSP, which actually saw an astounding 30k bump in unit sales over July, with 253k sold; an unusual spike considering the lower sales for the rest of the systems. The Nintendo powerhouses continue to make their assault known, the Nintendo DS leads with 518k sold, and the Wii continues with another 453k moved. Lastly, the good ol' PlayStation 2 keeps on ticking, bringing home 144k units for Sony.

Oh wow the 360 finally outsold the ps3. *sigh* They had to drop the price to outsell the ps3 by only 9.5k units is actually a good thing. Considering the cheapest ps3 is doubled the amount of the cheapest 360.

it'd be nice to show dollar amounts for sales.

then it would be pretty clear that when your machine costs half as much and still only outsells by 10k units, you aren't making more money than your competitor.

Corporations want more money. Unit sales are important, but not as important as cold hard cash

not really. with hardware sales comes software sales. and you have to believe that the 360 software is also outselling the ps3 software.

yea those numbers are accurate. but not only august, we don't got so much in september too so we may be outsold this month as well. BUT ... I can tell you with the big games hitting Oct and November and hell, add December in there too ... we'll regain it =)

Just got my PlayStation US magazine and they got some bad ass information on Valkyria Profile (woot!).

I also just notice, Eternal Sonata is getting released on Oct. 28 ... another woot! I pre-ordered it today.

edit -- Not to double post, you guys notice that Sony is actually not only covered by their other electronic products for the PS3, but also the PS2 is helping the PS3 sales ... while the 360 is getting no help ... MS really wants to crush the PS3 very badly, I want to see how it is going to turn out.

Well the economy...the way it is currently is a double edged sword for consoles. Yes people want to buy the cheaper console...but now people are more conscious of "most bang for your buck" pretty much. So yeah the Wii and 360 are atleast 200 bucks cheaper but the PS3 is still the better deal, its future proof!

On that note, i'll probably pick up a 360 within the holiday season cuz I want some more games to play such as Infinite Undiscovery,Too Human, Gears 2.

Don't do it! It's not worth it for those games.

On the other topic: Obviously the average consumer is uneducated about their console options and/or not particularly concerned about maximizing value. Otherwise the PS3 would be destroying the 360 in sales. But most people just want a "next gen" console and will go for the cheapest available. Of course this doesn't apply to most gamers, or the tech-literate, but it's true of the average person.

For the PS3 to out-sell the 360 this gen, Sony will need to cut the price soon. The $400 PS3 is an enormously better value than the $200 360, but that's not going to matter to a lot of consumers. They can get the kids a new console for Christmas or play Madden 09 and GTA for half the price of the PS3. For the average middle class idiot, that's enough to make the decision. And there's also the "premium" 360, which is still $100 less than the cheapest PS3 and comes with the luxuries (in the xbox world) of a wireless controller and a hard drive.

I think just a $50 price cut would do a lot for PS3 sales this Christmas and beyond. It would put the entry level model under $400 and the 360 Elite. I think a lot of potential 360 premium buyers would dish out the extra $50 to own the real "premium" console.

Im disappointed..... Now I cant use that line "360 hasn't outsold PS3 all of 2008" to all the 360 fanboys. It was such a good line. Will PS3 ever catch up? b4 a xbox 720 comes?

once the new owners start paying for xbox live n repairs (due to the red ring of death) ,they'll understand why ms can sell it that cheap. I think the price drop will help sales,bt im guessing majority of the xboxes will be bought by people who are replacing their defective 360s.

The holidays'll see the big numbers. At this point, i'd expect to see the console on the most christmas lists to drop in sales since a lot of people will be saving to get one for christmas.
The 360 and PS3 will probably be close next month too, likely with PS3 a little in the lead. Then PS3 kicking November and December. It's even possible that the Wii will loose a lot of it's market share too as that's become more of an easy pick up at anytime.

Surely people don't base thier purchase on what games were released for that month? Its only natural for sales for all 3 consoles to drop at this time of year because xmas is just around the corner.

I agree the masses think the ps3 cost more than the xbox 360 but it doesn't. the arcade model doesn't have a hard drive, so it worthless. the ps3 costs more at retail store but the xbox costs more when you bring it home. $400 for 80gb ps3 or $500 for 160gb and your good to go. the 60gb xbox cost $300 the 120gb xbox costs $400 then add $50 a year for xbox live and $60 for warranty which you need for the rrod. I think people are waiting for the 160gb to come out and holiday bundles.

ps don' waste your money on too human or infinite discovery they both suck and got 5-6 reviews.

I truly don't understand people. Why is people still buying a 360 when every game that comes out for it is crap. Take too human and infinte discovery for example. If you look at 360 exclusives compared to ps3 they dont measure up. OK they got mass effect and gears and blue dragon,but other than that they got a wall full of crap at gamestop. Not even worth taken a chance on the #1 unreliable system to date. Multiplatforms is the only thing thats saving the 360 in my book. Gamestop is helping 360 in a way too because every employee has one and if you go up there trying to buy a next gen system they will try there hardest to get you to buy a 360 over ps3. I mean these clowns highly recommend it. Its like M$ is paying them a commision everytime they sell a 360 over the ps3 do yall notice that.

Damn... The DS and Wii are really way ahead huh. I do agree that the 360 is unreliable but i still want some of the games they got, mainly the rpgs! I've got a feeling that i would like Operation Darkness and Spectral force 3!

Wii sure as hell ain't a next gen console,neither is the 360. Developers already struggling with the 360's weak processors and lack of storage for high end gaming.Blue ray FTW!

The wii is so far ahead I think it lapped 360 and PS3 a few times, then stopped to take a nap right before it lapped them again. It ridiculous when the only decent games on it i've played millions of times on the N64 and the gamecube.

Like everyone else I got a Wii. I liked it, but now I'm bored. Moved onto the PS3 and never looked back.

The Xbox720 will be a PSN exclusive download that will allow you to play 360 games. lol

I ALMOST bought a 360 today. I seriously pulled out 400$ out of the atm. I went to go grab it, but I sat there for 10 mins looking for the game to go with it then realized there isn't anything I wanna play on the thing. Everything on it I've either played, already have on PS3. I was confused for a while, soooo I just bought Dualshock3, orange box for PC, and METALLICA's new album :D
