Geoff Johns Slated To Write DC Universe Online Saga

Sony Online Entertainment has announced that Geoff Johns, renowned writer responsible for DC Comics creations like the Green Lantern, Action Comics and Justice Society of America, has signed on to write the script for DC Universe Online. The highly anticipated MMO, previously announced at E3, will be the "first-ever collaboration with legendary comic artist Jim Lee."

The game is designed to reward all those loyal DC Comics fans out there, and is currently in development for the PlayStation 3 and PC, with SOE working in tandem with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. For those of you unfamiliar with the premise, we're thinking it's something along the lines of the popular City of Heroes. Having a writer like Johns is a step in the right direction, too, as explained by SOE-Austin vice-president of development John Blakely:

"Having a writer of Geoff's caliber brings even more authenticity to the DC Universe Online, and should provide fans with an exciting new medium for his storytelling skills. Together with Jim Lee, who is our executive creative director for the game, we are tapping into the very best talent from the comic book industry."

In the game, you will "enter the DC Universe and battle alongside or against your favorite DC Comics heroes and villains." Obviously, there will be more than a few recognizable names roving about the large and engaging world; expect to see Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, The Flash, The Joker, Catwoman, and more. As for Johns, he seems quite enthusiastic about this opportunity.

"Taking comic books into the online space presents an exciting and unique opportunity for me as a writer. I'm looking forward to creating a thrilling story that explains why the DC Universe has suddenly been populated with millions of new heroes and villains in a way that will engage players."

We don't have a release date yet for DC Universe Online, but it was one of several big titles unveiled at E3 that turned some heads. Expect to see more details later this year, and prepare for a completely new comic-related experience!

If you're going to do it... do it right. That's what I always say. Glad to see the efforts being put into this one.

I really enjoyed City Of Heroes, it was the only MMORPG that got me excited. I don't like Orcs and goblins and what-not but super heroes are bloody cool. I may well get this given how much I enjoyed CoH, but it will ultimatly come down to subscription prices I reakon.
Also Marvel would have been much better than DC...
