Buy "Accelerated Experience Points" With Call Of Duty: World At War
Don't have the time to spend a lot of hours in Call of Duty: World at War multiplayer? Why not just buy your way to the top of the rankings?
Well, that's a bit of an exaggeration, but according to ALT+F4, Activision is planning a unique promotion for the launch of the next CoD entry. Evidently, the publisher wants to ramp up online activity for the franchise (even though CoD4 is massively popular on both the PSN and Xbox Live), and they want to do this via the "Day One Advantage." The player will purchase this option when they buy the game, and it will "accelerate their experience point earning." Basically, by tossing a few more bucks over the counter, you won't have to invest as much time as everyone else to rank up, and this may be a big positive for the casual gamers out there. But for the hardcore, they'll undoubtedly perceive this as lame; other people with less skill can have the same rank simply by paying more money. To the avid gamer, that may sound very unfair.
But hey, it's a well-known fact that this industry continues to work to embrace a larger and larger audience, and that includes the casual crowd. However, a promotion like this is bound to be exceedingly controversial, so...let the debate begin!

Combined with the way they discarded a lot of the more interesting games Vivendi had in development in favour of just keeping the safe bets, it doesn't really make them look good.

And to ANYONE who buys this i have some wise words for you..
You can buy your rank, but you can't buy skill.
In other words, i'll still whoop you up and down the game because i actually PLAYED it to get to your "accelerated" rank.

You can go 0-30 in one game and it won't harm your rank in any way. Good people are never defined by their rank in videogames.

Personally, I think that's pretty lame. If I get the game, I'll be playing it the old fashioned way... Earning my rank on my own.

And I'm also wondering if this is permanent, or if it only lasts for a week or something, you know?

Adding something like this, that is online, is just plain stupidity imo.

usually Devs work hard to make sure that the online portion of the game is very fair, but it appears Activision is doing the exact opposite. typically the system of "ranks" in an online game is to reflect the overall skill of the player. Higher rank=More Skill=Tougher opponent. This looks to me like it drastically unbalances the purpose of ranks, and cheapens them
This also has the potential to backfire. While many publishers like handing out freebies to get people to preorder (hat for mercs 2, sniper rifle for BF:BC, Various stuff for LBP), none of them have really given people who dont preorder a reason not to buy the game. In this case, arriving to the party late means you wont level up as fast as the rest, which is a big disincentive. Why would I buy a game that is already stacked against me before i even buy it, when there are plenty of other good (if not stellar) titles that have been perfectly balanced?
This looks better on paper than it does in practice, but its unprecidented. It's a gamble, but a rather large one, with high risk and low gain. We'll wait and see, but I wouldn't be surprised if it blows up in activision's face.
