Holiday Face-Off: Resistance 2 vs. Gears Of War 2
While there are plenty of hot titles scheduled to release over the next few months, none are hotter than Resistance 2 for the PlayStation 3 and Gears of War 2 for the Xbox 360. This is gonna be one hell of a holiday showdown.
Both are shooters, yes; but one is a true-blue FPS while the other utilizes a third-person, over-the-shoulder mechanic that works exceedingly well. The original Gears of War was an easy Game of the Year nominee and winner while Resistance: Fall of Man was the best PS3 launch title...by a long shot. And at E3 this year, the attendees were wowed by the release of several new gameplay videos for Insomniac's ambitious project, which appears to be bigger and better in just about every possible respect. At the same time, everyone is expecting nothing short of brilliance with GeoW2, and the Xbox 360 still has the lead in terms of an established user base. Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of this particular head-to-head contest is that these two titles are exclusive to one particular platform; that's a damn rare thing these days. As the third-party exclusive is borderline extinct, we have to turn to first (or second)-party teams for exclusive projects.
So of course, the big question is, which one? Well, it's nearly impossible to make that decision. It may be a no-brainer for FPS fans who still refuse to embrace even the best third-person gameplay, but for those who simply want an unbelievable experience, there may not be a definitive answer. We can say that Resistance 2 is yet another reason to own the PS3, as if MGS4 wasn't enough of a reason a few months back. As for the 360, which seems to have a lighter holiday lineup than Sony, GeoW2 will easily be the biggest exclusive 2008 title. The PS3 will also get a huge boost from LittleBigPlanet, MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, and SOCOM: Confrontation, but the Resistance sequel should set the tone. The detail appears amazing for both games, the gameplay should be spot-on, and the rest may come down to personal preference regarding story, atmosphere, and general style. As for online, GeoW2 will be gigantic, but it'll be tough to top Resistance 2's 60-player extravaganza, especially with the free Network.
Yeah, those who don't know us just figure we're using this as an excuse to promote the PS3 game over the 360 game, but that's not what we're about at PSXE. As far as this writer is concerned, it's all about playing the best of the best, and no matter how I break this contest down...I just can't come up with a winner. I refuse to recommend one game over the other, and all I can really say is this: I'm thankful to have two awesome games coming out at about the same time, and I really don't care they're on two different platforms. I suppose I can say I want Resistance 2 just a bit more because I think it'll be longer than GeoW2 and more worth my $60, but I'm not even entirely sure that'll be true. So if you're torn, I'm sorry I wasted your time, but I can't help you. Get both. :)

So I really have no clue. I do hope the 360 takes another drop in price by the holiday, but that might not happen since it did already. If I had a 360 tho, both of these titles would be at the top of my list, right on top of LBP and Bioshock(PS3). Forgot about Fable2 as well... that'd be up there somewhere too.

I hated the online part for GeoW (too many rude people over XBL) and loved every piece of RFOM (my first PS3 game).
I'll be playing both, and if you can, you have to do it.
But, first on my shooters holiday list is Socom, I'm loving every shoot in the game and has that old Socom feeling and a beautiful tactical gameplay. Something that neither R2 or GeoW2 have.

Though I'm siding with Resistance since I find it more engaging more creative.
The kinds of weapons in Resistance is something special.
And not to mention how every aspect(both story and online) are very deep and well made.
And now that you can fill up rooms up to 60 players...wow that'll be sweet...

However I am not insulting Resistance, Resistance is an Awesome game and I will definately be getting the next installment, but I will also be getting gears of war 2 (which in my opinion will be better after watching the trailer included in unreal tournament 3, which also sucked a little I just don't like the smooth movement of some first person shooters it looks awesome THEY'RE ADDING THE MOST AWESOME FLAME THROWER EVER!).
I love resistance but its no Gears of War (I have yet to find a game which is better, except OBLIVION) can't wait for bothe these games too come out its going to be a fun winter (also looking forward to Fable 2 and Fallout 3)

I have no idea who will come out on top, gears has a very big fanbase compared to resistance.. but resistance seems to promise alot more than the first one. It's a coin toss ladies and gents!

With the two major players in the 'hardcore' console war (Wii is a part of the same generation of consoles, but Nintendo went 'innovative' over 'powerful,' which excludes it from this particular comparison) each pushing a second chapter in a popular, innovative franchise, it can only mean better games. No one can rest on their laurels in such an ultra-competative environment and that means newer, bigger, better things.
It's going to be an exciting showdown to watch, that's for sure.

My 360 was well used for the year when I didn't have my PS3, Gears 1 was brilliant. Now both systems get used on a regular basis.

Resistance did well because it's a great game. I played that and Gears, and while I might say Gears is a slightly better game technically, I emphasize "slightly." I will also say I ended up having more fun with Resistance, but that's only a personal preference.

its a happy day when a Dev wants to make a game so huge it has to trim slightly to fit inside 45GB.
This is good. I have high hopes for R2, and i think it might be a prime example of exactly how much you can do with a ton of power and a huge storage disc. Make me proud, Insomniac.

*edgy was the most polite way i could think of to describe the horrible dialog in gears designed to shock teens into thinking they were playing an adult game by dropping the f bomb every other line
gears was fun. it really was. and although i did finish it i didn't do so because i was compelled to by the story, like i have with other great games like Uncharted, Resistance, or God of War
