Life With PlayStation Sneaks Into Folding@Home Update?

For a while now, people have been wondering when the new PlayStation 3 application, Life with PlayStation, would arrive. For those who don't know, it's a global news and weather program that allows you to...well, check the news and weather anywhere in the world. It's a neat little feature, to be sure, but it has been delayed several times.

We still have no official announcement, but oddly enough, it seems it's already here...maybe. Sev1512 of PlayStation LifeStyle claims Life with PlayStation has been released through a Folding@Home update. You wouldn't know unless you have that Stanford-oriented research program on your PS3, but if you load it up and then nab the required update, Life with PlayStation mysteriously pops up. In fact, he says the Folding@Home icon gets "replaced" with Life with PlayStation. Images and videos are starting to circulate of users sampling the freshly obtained application, and in some ways, this makes perfect sense. We had heard that Life with PlayStation would be linked with Folding@Home; when running the former, the latter would continue to operate. Hence, this could be the preferred delivery system for the global news and weather program, although it's a tad bizarre that Sony never bothered to announce it.

We're going to check a little later to see if this works for us, although some users are claiming they haven't been prompted to download any Folding@Home update. This puts us in a bit of a pickle, but we'll try to work it out. If you'd like, head over to your PS3 right now to see what happens, and let us know if you're a sudden Life with PlayStation user.

MusterBuster of the PS forums has said that a test form went out by mistake. He also said that launch details will come soon.

Wasn't it something like when Sony were doing testing they accidently put it up for download and then had to take it back.

Folding@home is a way to donate your processing power to Stanford for what Bardock above decribes. While I havent personally folded all that much, the dashboard is very relaxing---rotating globe with fellow ps3 users lights on through out. You can also play in-game music(since it starts up as a game). I think that's a fabulous idea to incorporate life inside folding@home, more people will probably use it.

This will certainly make Folding less...Useless?

With energy prices going up, its expensive to use a power-sink like a PS3, especially when your not playing on it. I used to leave it on with Folding running at night but i just cant anymore. It really is a bummer, but it cant be helped.

I dont have it, looks like you guys said it was a mistake, i thought it might be a secret beta or some nonsense, but i did find a system update, ill try again after that. I'd like to have this thing, I dig Folding because they help with diseases I have lost people to and yeah the graphic is soothing, also I like to set it to play my loaded mp3s. You can kinda rotate a 3d rendering of a buncha molecules. Alzheimers runs in my family too, so I'm willing to fork over some processing power to help Stanford.

When I started-up folding I got a note that it has been "renamed" to Life with Playstation. Then it started to download v1.0 ... 126MB. So this appears to be true - for some.

Hey guys, Sony has updated their stuff, and LIFE WITH PLAYSTATION is now available to download for real. My guess is they didn't intend to release it, but with last nights screw up, it caused quite a bit of outcry from PS3 owners, thus responding with releasing it. I could be wrong, but that's my take on it.

I just did a system update (Not required for ne1 outside of Japan) and a folding update. Life with Playstation is now in place of Folding. You can switch between the Life format and original Folding format by pressing Square and select your flavor from there. But I have to say that I like what they've done. Mess with config for a bit and see what you like, but no matter what it's helping humanity, and there is no other console that can say that. Screw a 360!
