Dead Space: Don't Skip Cut-Scenes

It's one of the most anticipated games of the fall, and even though it releases during the loaded month of October, our hopes remain high that it'll be a must-have title.

However, there are some twitch-gamers out there who are going to want to skip the cut-scenes, just 'cuz they have the patience of a gnat. If you're one of these people, you might want to pass on Dead Space; the writer claims "you'd be a fool to do that." According to CVG citing PSW magazine, Anthony Johnson wrote the script for the game and is also responsible for the corresponding comic, and he tells us you'll be very, very lost if you pass on the cut-scenes.

"You'd be a fool to do that. If you want to find out the mysteries of the game, you need to listen to the dialogue. But more than that, you actually need to listen to it so you can complete the game."

It's that last sentence that's going to generate some discussion. What exactly does he mean that we have to "listen to it" to finish the adventure? Is it going to be one of those situations where if you skip the cut-scene, you'll miss crucial information that would let you pass the next gameplay segment? We're seeing more and more in the way of story revolution in this new generation, and this could be another example of how the script becomes an essential part of the experience...

I think that it sounds like a great idea. I'll admit I am guilty of skipping cut scenes just because I feel like I am ready to move on. I think this will, just as you said, develop the story telling aspect of the next gen games a lot more than what it is currently.

I love the cut scenes, I think of them as a reward. Especially when I can complete a game and you can enjoy them all like a small film.

Huh. This kinda changes my outlook on the game. I originally thought the story would be the worst element, but I could be wrong. I always like a good story!

Good! Sometimes I watch my younger brother play games and he's always skipping cut scenes that just irritate the crap out of me. I feel the cut scenes give the game character and build on the depth of the storyline. I definitely get more satisfaction out of the game this way.

I like the idea of watching cut-scenes to be able to advance in the game as long as you can pause, rewind, fastforward and watch them again at your convienience.

Cut scenes are a must in my opinion. It pulls the gamer down further into the story well provided its good!! Thats how i am with MGS at the moment..playing it slowly..enjoying every moment..including the cutscenes..i must say being able to apuse the cutscenes is a must too..theres nothing worse then a long cutscene halfways through and the phone rings r whatever..

Good to hear. Good cutscenes can add so much to a game and make a great game even better. Final Fantasy and Metal Gear for example. I watch every cutscene on the first playthrough but after that I tend to skip them. How people can just skip them right off the bat is beyond me. Developers spend countless hours working on them, scripting them, and recording voicework in most cases now. Enjoy the full game not just the gameplay. I really enjoy the Force Unleashed cutscenes. The best Star Wars ones to date.

i will not skip cut-scenes i think im going to skip this game all together no online story not that good looking coming out when 2 meny good games are out.

i hate it having to watch cut scenes, made me nearly hang myself during mgs4, loved the game but the cut scenes took the piss

So, if the cut scenes are so crucial, why not make it to where you can't skip them? Or you have to pause it first for those that just can't wait?

I say let the impatient people skip if they want to . They are the ones who suffer by missing out on the story.

Personally, I'll happily stick to watching every minute I can, atleast on the first playthrough.

I don't know ... even if I do watch the cut scenes, will I be able to finish the game? I'm not a very good listener. I'll have to wait for some reviews before deciding on this one.

Sorry for a double post...but are you guys serious? I'm not trying to be a DB, but is it really that hard to sit through a few minutes of story telling. You don't even have to do anything...just watch, lol. I know we live in a society that cultivates low attention spans, but seriously guys...What happened to the time when people loved and looked forward to cut-scenes; playing just a few extra moments in hopes for a big story reveal. It's not only this, but reading in the US is in the decline big-time as well, I'm guessing because kids don't want to take the time to indulge their imaginations. Go take some aderol and watch the dang cut-scenes.

As one of my professor yelled once to some skate punks as we were all coming back from a bar..."Go Read a Book"!!!
