Quantic Dream Comments On Weapon Usage In Heavy Rain

Now one of the most anticipated titles for the PlayStation 3, Heavy Rain has everyone asking many, many questions. Quantic Dream plans to take this project to another level of storytelling, going so far as to have the plot continue if the main character dies. There has also been plenty of discussion revolving around the gameplay itself, and here's where David Cage has some new details for us.

According to the Videogaming247 blog, Cage revealed that just because you can pick up any number of objects in the world, that doesn't mean you can use them all the time. In other words, don't think of this as GTA simply due to the relative open-world environment that you will explore. Specifically, Cage said:

"You could take the bottle, you can take the screwdriver, you can take the chainsaw, you can use different things and use them as a weapon if the context makes it logical. For example, when the guy comes back in, it’s a weapon. But if you’re just in middle the street, no. The philosophy behind it is not like GTA and it’s an open world and I can do whatever, even if it’s silly. You can do whatever makes sense in the context. That’s really our policy."

So no taking the screwdriver to that little girl playing in the puddle, and don't go arbitrarily smashing a bottle against a telephone pole. Basically, Cage is saying if you want to act like a spaz, go play GTA; in Heavy Rain, you need to accept the seriousness and gravity of the situation and follow along with the engrossing story. Items will help you, but as he says, only "if the context makes it logical." Sounds good to us.

Why is this "one of the most anticipated games"? I get why Killzone 2, Resistance 2 and GT5 are most anticipated.....but why Heavy Rain?

Not alot is known about this game and it is not a proven franchise. What am I missing?

I think it's part hype and part originality. A lot of gamers these days are looking toward original games instead of the same ol same ol fps crap.

Yeah...I can't wait not to do something out of context. That'll be great to grab stuff and not use it...Awesome!

Would someone mind telling us what on earth this game is about? The fact that you can play even after you've been pwned and killed by a goomba or whatever is bad in this game sounds original but kind of worries me. What if the next person you control dies? Or all of them? Is it gonna make me wanna put that screwdriver through my brain? I know I don't hafta buy it or anything but I agree with poster 1, we need to know why we should consider this a special title otherwise it could be a ton of hype.

I Just have this sinking feeling that my ADD is going to kick in before I finish this game, and it'll become boring.

I'll tag this as a really good example of "Games As Art", but i'm gonna pass on buying this one.

Why woudl you possibly want to stop people doing something in a game??the more freedom the better!! and besides my logical thinking could be completely different to someone elses logical thinking.

Does this mean, Ben, that if you *can* take a screwdriver to the girl playing in the puddle, that the developers think it's logical? :-P

I was a lot more excited about Heavy Rain before the announcements. The more I learn about it, the less interested I become - and I LOVE games with great stories! But I don't wanna play a story... I'm real open to new experiences, I enjoy art myself, but I'm not willing to spend $60 on a game just for the story. If it was coming to the PSN for $40, I would definately get it.

Seems like anything that's not an FPS gets a lot of hype. Maybe gamers are finally getting sick of FPS's. I know I am. Although I must say, I have high hopes for Killzone 2.

Paying for the storyline is almost always worth it. I usually have to put down games just because the storyline is boring me and is no longer fun.

Thank god it's not another boring FPS. >.< I wish guys were a bit smarter sometimes. :\
