Valve On PlayStation 3: "We Don't Have The Bandwidth"

Before you finish reading this article, we sense your eyes will have rolled skywards at least several times.

1Up recently interviewed Valve co-founder Gabe Newell and marketing director Doug Lombardi, and they got on the topic of PS3 development. This isn't a fun topic for Valve, especially considering the unbridled hostility we've seen from PS3 owners in the past few years, all directed towards Valve's lack of support. Anyway, Valve just released a set of free updates for Team Fortress 2 for the PC, and they're also coming to the Xbox 360. Are they coming to the PS3 version of the game? Nope. Of course not. After all, Valve has no internal PS3 developers. Lombardi said as much, and Newell said this is the reason why EA handled the port of The Orange Box last year...which didn't turn out very well. As for the ongoing controversy surrounding Left 4 Dead, and whether or not it will go to the PS3, don't hold your breath. Newell said, quite simply, "we don't have the bandwidth. What the heck does this even mean? Couldn't they get the bandwidth if they wanted to?

Newell did say they are looking to get some in-house PS3 developers at some point in the future, but at this point, PS3 owners may not care very much. Some have just replied, "what are we really missing?" So far, just the best version of The Orange Box, but that's about it. Anyway, while it's good to hear that Valve will try to jump into the PS3 development waters at some point, they've got a long ways to go before they redeem themselves.

Its disappointing that great games like portal and half-life are developed by such stubborn people. Otherwise I would care less for valve.

What's new.
Sony could pay them $50 million and they would still pass along all development to someone else to make the game.
I've come to terms with this, and this is why I have a gaming PC that can run HL2 so I can play Episode 3.

Damn valve and they're inferiority. So the Half Life series is pretty great. But the ps3 community won't get to experience Left 4 Dead which is very bad news. There is no excuse good enough.

Now that would all work if Valve were interested in doing that - seems Valve are more interested in shirking that aspect of work and offering excuses/fake justifications.

Hehe you tell'em Scarecrow. I personally don't care anymore to what Gabe and them say. I loved the PS3 version of the Orange Box. I never really got into Team Fortress 2, so I don't feel Im missing much. Now as for Left 4 Dead, here we go again with them messing up with gamers. It's already multiplatform, they might as well take it the next step and let it go to the PS3. I think EA could handle it this time, considering they have learned a thing or two since then. Even though Dice is making Mirror's Edge, EA still owns it and it was developed on the PS3 hardware. So mean come on.

IMHO i think their making a BIG mistake here, there is quite alot of money to be made on the PS3 market nowadays, why don't they come to terms with this and TRY to make the damned PS3 port!

Vale has a pretty good resource of money and if they were truly serious about making money on the PS3 they would invest a PS3 studio.Hell if Crytech is giving full support in thier next game and Valve isnt, there just strait being lazy.I could understand if the tides had never changed for the PS3 and it was still doin horrible but its the best consule to own right now.....those idiots just dont make sense!!

Bandwidth?!!? WTF?
Do they mean a hardware thing like between the GPU and something else?
Are they trying to download a PS3?
What kind of response is that?

lol...I'm going to start using this as my answer to everything.

Hey, I'm sure the fatman uses that excuse with the ladies all the time! Although, bandwidth does refer to both those things you guessed about, he is actually using it in the way you have in the latter: Capacity. They don't have enough ps3 know-how, right now, and so this is why they may hire ps3 developers (which is a very tough market) in the future.

What is most annoying, and baffling, of his attitude, really, is how dismissive he is to his actual customers. Sure, the average consumer won't know who he is or what he has said, but the fan base, which half-life franchise relies heavily on, will certainly know, especially those who were introduced to the series by the Orange Box! I know I was certainly looking out for Half-Life 3. The series had a great story, and the orange box, despite being unoptimally ported, was one of my favorite packs from this generation. But now, even though I have a 360, I'm not holding my breath, and if I do get it, i will definitely pick it up used... and not because I want to save money.

Yea, Valve has firmly established themselves as the Losers of the videogame developing community. In all truth unless a developer is own by one of the platforms(Ex: Sony > PD) then the wisest choice for a Dev is to cater to all platforms/systems. So not only are these guys worthless fanboys who haven't outgrown it, but they also follow idiotic business practices. Goodwork...have a cookie...Loser.

It's simple,Sony don't have time 4 valve n vice versa, why? Cause Sony don't understand why they should get on they knees n beg valve to learn ps3 architecture, cause to Sony valve or no valve they got nun to loose, they have better things to think about like MediaMolcule,Quantic Dream,Square etc.
Damn! Do we now have to beg devs to make games 4 a system, nonsense.Sony is a real confident company n not shaky like MS.Sony walks thru the shadows of the valley of gamin competition it fears no defeat.

This is really unacceptable to the customers that bought this game. If valve had EA port it then they certainly should of had an agreement that EA would also port any fixes or feature enhancements that are made to the other platforms. Not doing so makes valve responsible in that respect and EA responsible in the fact that they do not care to make sure a game they ported is updated while other platforms are updated by Valve.

I bought the PC version a year ago and just bought the PS3 version 2 months ago and prefer to play the PS3 version because the port wasn't really that bad to me and the PS3 version is more convenient for me to play.

Left For Dead may still be coming to the ps3 publishe by EA, theres a article on CVG today about it, as for valve don't really care about them, they are just stubborn and can't be bothered to produce games for the ps3 IMO.

"We don't have enough bandwith", Its more like valve aint got big enough cojones. In the end they lose, alienating the ps3 leaves 10 million ps3's searching for other game. Way to go, you will always be a mediocre developer with them business practices.

Firstly I'd actually like to admit that as a avid PC gamer (gamers play across more than one platform) valve are my favourite developer BUT I agree 100% with all ps3 owners. valve does treat the ps3 with little to no respect and its a real shame because I feel that the ps3 is by far the best console on the market. let just hope that they will try ALOT harder in future with regards to the PS3.
Look at what they do on the PC and you can see that they know what there doing when making great games it's just plain laziness if you ask me and alot of fanboyism.

If they dont want my business, i dont want their games.

It would have been simple enough to fib and pull the line "The PS3 is harder to program for cause we're not used to it" and people would just be miffed that valve hasn't gotten with the program. Right now i feel like an afterthought, and that valve can TOTALLY do without my money.

well, cool. I'm happy to oblige. I'll go spend my cash where it's wanted.
