Will A Stacked October Make 2008 The Best Gaming Year Ever?

In looking back at the current generation, which technically began in late 2005 with the release of the Xbox 360, we may have never seen a month like the one that begins tomorrow. In October, we're looking at a downright ridiculous release schedule; one that almost seems best suited for November or December.

But we're not about to complain. Now, we're certain you well-informed gamers out there are aware of many of the hot October releases, but have you really seen the list? Do you have any idea how badly this coming month is gonna assault your wallet? Check out the list of scheduled October launches, and bear in mind that these are only the notables; we're not including other promising titles like Star Ocean: First Departure for the PSP and the sports games like NBA 2K9 and NBA Live 09. But here, just look:

Yeah, I know there aren't any Wii games on there, but that's because...well, does that system even have games, anymore? Aren't the Wii owners still just playing Twilight Princess and Super Mario Galaxy? Well, whatever. All I know is the next-gen October schedule for the PS3 and Xbox 360 is absolutely nutty, and I believe it may be the single best month of the generation so far. And if the majority of these encouraging titles turn out to be excellent, we might want to start asking if 2008 is one of the best years in gaming history...

We've already had revolutionary titles like Grand Theft Auto IV and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, plus other superb games like Burnout Paradise, Devil May Cry 4, God of War: Chains of Olympus, Super Smash Bros. Brawl (oh look, there's a Wii one...heh, get it?), Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, Soul Calibur IV, Wipeout HD, Madden NFL 09, Spore, and more. And we ain't done yet. Resistance 2, Gears of War 2, Call of Duty: World at War, and several others will be here before the year is out, so...10 years after what was arguably the best year ever in gaming, will we have a new champion?

Think about it long and hard. Yeah, the games that released back in '98 were incredible, but is the list really that much better than the names shown here? Hmm... The notables in '98 included The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Starcraft, Soul Calibur, Metal Gear Solid, Baldurs Gate, Half-Life, Resident Evil 2, Xenogears, Tekken 3, Unreal, and Gran Turismo. Well, MGS4 and MGS can butt heads, as can SCIV and the original SC, and while probably not as revolutionary now, Resistance 2 and Gear of War 2 can compete with Unreal and Half-Life. Can Dead Space be as good as RE2? Sadly, we don't have the RPG competition this year, so maybe that's the deal-breaker, but even so...the likes of LittleBigPlanet and Grand Theft Auto IV absolutely cannot be ignored. the comparison is interesting, is it not?

u missed some ps3 games like naruto ultimate ninja storm, eternal sonata
its a good year for 360 owners but a better year for ps3 owners

a baldurs gate the hours i put into that game... totally worth it XD

2008 is definately a great year for gaming. Next year is as well. GT5 (hopefully), GoW3, FFXIII Versus and normal, Tekken 6, Street Fighter, MVC3 (hopefully), argh so many. I'm looking forward to finishing off school this year hehehehe.

Ben I've never known you to make a mistake so I'm guessing there is a reason you left these out but there still PS3 Eternal Sonata in Oct, and Valkyria Chronicles in Nov. That said, I have an extra $200 bucks burnin a hole and that aint enough to get all the games I want!

I know all about them, but Eternal Sonata has been out for over a year (Bioshock has been, too, but it's actually a blockbuster release), and in all honesty, not enough people care about Valkyria Chronicles.

I have never seen so many great games coming out, this holiday season will be insane. Maybe if congress cant fix the economy maybe the ps3 will. Too bad I cant get the loan I need to get all the games I want.

Lbp OR Fable 2 for me this month.Ben,I noticed Fable 2 is the only x360 exclusive u added, i reckon u gettin Fable 2 cause u've missed rpg's,same with me,Right?

Anyways i will like 2 add,i tried Nba Live 09 demo n for y'all who luv nba, I must say this is one sports game with a billion animations have ever seen in ma life,i think Live 09 will be the best nba sim yet just like Fifa 09.

To dat headline question,I think October is pretty stacked but a lotta aliens will be crawlin in November(R2,Gears2)

Only thing Im gunna say is that GH world tour and Rock revolution are both for the PS2 and Wii aswell Ben, so there are actually 2 Wii titels up there :P lol.

Ben how rude... no PES 2009 or fifa 2009, them two games will outsell most of the games above, and thats only because its a close 50-50 split between the 2, if u add both the football games there is 2gether it would outsell every game in that list ( i kno your american and your not that arsed about the football ( soccer ) games but they still sell like crazy, which just adds to a great month, tho with me getting pes am only lookin to add LBP and Socom to that list, 3 games will keep me tied til Resistance 2 drops... and lets not forget football manager drops out soon, i kno some of the british folk on ere will be having that when it drops.

Ben I know "your a gamer not a fanboy" and you "apperciate all games regardless of the platform" and the rest of your liberal hippy bs, but when you run a Playstation website nobody wants to hear about xbox 360 and fable 2 or gears 2 throw in the odd editorial about them by all means but everyday your talking about the xbox, we don't care! I like those games not a hugh fan of the 360 or ms but thats what i go to VG247 for a site NOT a PS3 website.

Opinions aside Gears of War 2, Fable2, etc. will be great games. That in itself is not debatable(unless they flop of course).

Fanboyism doesn't do the gaming community any good.

I mean I know I'm not buying those two games but that doesn't mean that I can't accept how good they are.

While I don't think too much of the Wii's line-up (or their cheap strategy of coming up with more controllers than good games), surely your comment was a little unbecoming of a professional journalist - gaming or otherwise? I know you are as entitled to strong opinions as anybody else, but I was under the impression that bias should be a little restrained in reporting.

I don't mean to offend you or anything - just typing out what I felt.

This is an editorial. People express opinions in editorials, and that statement isn't a fraction as harsh as the ones used by most newspaper columnists in their editorials. Trust me on this; I've done both.

It is my opinion that the software lineup for the Wii is absolutely pathetic in comparison to the PS3 and 360...people are lucky I didn't say something worse.

I'll take you at your word then - I agree that yours are probably less harsh than other editorials - non-gaming anyway. You should see the degree of bias in unashamedly supporting the 360 and spinning most news in MS's favour on some other (purportedly unbiased) gaming websites, e.g. Eurogamer (my opinion entirely) - well, for most "journalists" on there anyway.

Thinker: Yeah, it's true. Sadly, many game "journalists" out there aren't journalists at all. They've never worked in the field, they've never been published, and just because they know games, they think that automatically qualifies them as media.

It's a trend that HAS to die if gaming news journalism wants to be taken seriously.

Nice shot at the Wii! Its not the consumers fau-, well..., maybe it IS their fault. There's no way anyone can con ME into buyin a $250 ps2 with motion controls. Thats 4 nex gen games that will alone prove the difference! People gotta be more informed...I blame the parents. (Hence the reason I purchased a future proof ps3)

Neways '98 was actually ground-breaking. Grand turismo graced our consoles for the first time....BUT I do my own game shoppin now so I can get 'em all! Yey bein all grown up Rocks!

I have to say it is pretty close to '98's lineup. That is, with the exception of a few, like Saint's Row 2, Spider-Man, and Legendary. Nothing against those titles, but I'm sure there not going to be anywhere near mindblowing as most of the games were in 98.
