Console Installed Base Nearly Doubles In UK In One Year

Recently, video game professionals in the UK have complained about a significant lack of new talent coming into the industry, and that's unfortunate. Obviously, gaming is big in that region; why not give a little back, guys?

Gaming is so big, in fact, that according to information gathered by High Street retailer The Game Group and GfK Chart Track, and reported on by GamesIndustry.biz, the next-gen console installed base has almost doubled in the past year. As of last month, the PlayStation 3 hit 1.4 million, the Xbox 360 is at 2.3 million, and the globally popular Wii is at 3.6 million. Both the PS3 and 360 have sold 1.1 million units since this time last year (so much for the 360 always outselling the PS3), and the Wii's user base has grown from 1.1 million to 3.6 million. This growth applies to handhelds, too; the DS rocketed from 3.8 million to 7.1 million while the PSP's base grew from 2.2 million to 2.9 million. In all, the total installed user base for the five consoles in question has nearly doubled in the UK: a total of 8.8 million this time in 2007 to about 17.3 million now. That's a pretty significant jump, and one of the reasons why Sony and other major publishers aren't about to ignore that region any longer.

Traditionally, the UK and Europe has received the short end of the stick when it comes to game releases; any gamer over there will tell you they usually have to wait longer than anyone else. But with gaming more of a worldwide phenomenon than ever, and the UK posting such big numbers, the days of Euro gamers sitting at the bottom of the barrel should be over.

I wish I was in the UK, at least they receive the short end of the stick, in Mexico we don't receive anything at all.

the trouble is in europe, is it takes the developers longer to translate into about 10 diff languages, which is why we always get stuff late, which is a fair arguement, altho terrible frustrating as we could just have the american version of games and be sorted, yet they alwayz used to be region locked, this generation is different at least as their is no region locking on blu rays, meaning when stupid stuff ( like unreal tournament came out in november 07 for america but march 08 for uk) ppl can just buy it off ebay straight away, i have a few american games, and this has really made a big difference being able to import games now, this had made developers get games out in europe at the same time more or less as in america, altho only on a friay lol, games films and dvds only ever come out on fridays in the uk lol but still this is good news i have a ps3 a wii a ds and this crimbo i'l be getting a psp

In the UK we speak English too. So why can't the UK get the same release date as NA and have the rest of Europe wait, and blame them for speaking a different language.

Europe's economy and overall acceptance of v-games has really increased this decade.

During the ps1 days I can only remember the UK being relevant.

These days even countries like Spain and Italy are important.
It's all due to the European Union thing they started in the late 1990s(if I'm right)

Anyway good to see Europe and the UK in particular accepting v-games in such a large way.

Personally I'd love Japan the best, they really know what's good.

Top cars and technology..who wouldnt like Japan?? But i think the whole its rude to blow your nose in public rude..yet its acceptable to pick it very strange..as a european gamer this can only be considered a good thing. Pity there isnt a worldwide council for rating videogames as that sometimes holds up game launches here too. the WGRA(Worldwide Game Rating Association!!)
