First Dead Space Review: Does EA Redefine Survival/Horror?

Yeah, we know what you're thinking: "holy crap, it's not possible...it's EA!" Well, the largest video game publisher in the world has to eventually get lucky, right?

It seems the first review for the highly anticipated survival/horror title, Dead Space, has arrived courtesy of Xbox 360 World Magazine, which just hit store shelves yesterday. As reported on by several sites around the Internet, including CVG and Joystiq, that review is very, very positive: 91%. In fact, they go so far as to say that EA could teach Capcom (makers of the uber-popular Resident Evil series) "a think or three about survival/horror." Yeah, they really did say that. In terms of the environment, the review says that exploring your spaceship - the Ishimura - is "a nail-biting experience" and they actually go so far as to compare it to Rapture in Bioshock. Apparently, it's "just as meticulously designed and easily believable." And last but not least, the crowning achievement of the game centers on its very cool Zero G environments. "When the gravity is removed the fun really starts."

Well, this is certainly good news. Of course, we will have the final say on the matter, just 'cuz we've got a few of the most professional and knowledgeable critics in the industry. Oh...but it's true. Stay tuned!

I think the only way to decide what you will spend your money is to create some system whereby you prioritise what you want by scoring each item appropriately; using a scoring system that relates to your specific needs/game type or genre and features. It would be great to buy all these games, but it will eventually lead to some sort of bankruptcy. One has to tier the purchases, and decide how many games are bought within a one year period and then try to prioritise those purchases. Do remember that 6-8 months later the game prices are reduced, so you could get Bioshock and more, for 49 or 29 dollars depending on the title. You could squeeze two titles out of your 60 dollars, but the penalty is having to wait... I don't mind waiting, I don't get overly excited by too much these days anyway, so I will wait and take my pick. Saying this, the title I will purchase off the bat is Killzone2, the others are not that crucial for me at the minute!

With regards to EA... they are the publisher, they can control quality to a specific level, any more and time to market is lost. They are so large they probably don't care too much if there is a bad apple in their basket every so often. In this case make sure you don't purchase titles from EA immediately upon release, make sure you scan and read multiple reviews of an EA title and see if it fits your criteria of game genre, features and QUALITY. If it stinks leave it... as people have learned with Orange Box. I don't suspect ALL games EA publish will be bad, Dead Space is a good example, and Bad Company another. Take your pick!

Q!

Its a real rip off of Bioshock,Though Silent Hill Homecoming has been getting unjustified reviews The IGN review was appauling, The writter didnt talk abour many qualities in the game like about the boss battles being unique. I'll still be buying Silent Hill Homecoming, If there are more positive reviews i may buy it at a lower price.

Jury's out on Silent Hill for me, SH: The Room was too hard imo. I'd run out of bullets and have to beat the baddies to hell with a pipe but they would just get back up and F with me again! Dead Space looks tight but I still dunno if its in the budget. RE5 is a lock. I just a got new job (yay) so maybe I can swing it. Too bad Dead Space aint exclusive but ya gotta give the bots somethin'

This concept that EA never publishes good games is bogus. The following games all received better-than-average to good reviews from Gamespot:
Madden 09
Army of Two
Burnout Paradise
Skate
Battlefield: Bad Company

EA gets a bad rap because people like to attack the "big guy" on the block and see him fail. Well, EA is no longer the de facto biggest game publisher out there. That would be ActivisionBlizzard. Go get 'em guys! ;)

out of the two i played on that lisr, both were awful, Army of Two was horrific & Burnout Paradise had no multiplayer modes, it was also very easy to take a wrong turn & lose the race with no chance for a come back.

UltimaDream : One, you need to be clearer on that 'no multiplayer, cuz at first i thought u were on about online.

two, Taking wrong turns gave me a sense of difficulty and realism, in real life you wouldn't have flashing barriers telling you where the race wuz going!

As for Burnout Paradise....I love this game! As long as you pay attention to your turn signals going off a few seconds before the turn you shouldn't have a problem missing a turn and losing the race. I'm up to 42 cars.

Alright not a bad investment! The only review that really matters, is your own.

Guess I was wrong about this game... but that's only one review and if you look at metacritic, ratings are all over the place for just about anything. It actually disapoints me that it might end up being really good tho because now I gotta think about buying it lol.

LOL a ripoff of Bioshock? That seems to be a ridiculous comparison in my opinion. One is a first person shooter set in an underwater city while the other is a 3rd person survival horror title set on a ship in space. I'm with you Advent Child, I preordered it a while back and was nervous too. Still am pretty nervous, but this is definitely a good start. If a game has a good story, which I am sure this one will with the animated comic, the game, and the movie all coming out I will be interested in it.
