Square-Enix Set To Underwhelm PS3 Owners At TGS 2008

Square-Enix dropped a bomb at E3 this year when they announced Final Fantasy XIII for the Xbox 360, but can we expect any blockbuster unveilings at the Tokyo Game Show this week? Well, before the hype and anticipation starts, we'd like to say: nah.

Final Fantasy Union recently ran an article about what to expect, and as far as we can see, we'll have to look elsewhere for any super big announcements. While Square-Enix is bringing 25 titles to the show, only 6 of them have anything to do with the revered Final Fantasy franchise, and only 9 of the total 25 games on display will be playable. One bit of good news is that this includes the upcoming Dissidia: Final Fantasy for the PSP, so handheld fans should be anticipating some new gameplay footage. But beyond that, we likely won't see much in the way of new details or information concerning either Final Fantasy XIII or the still-PS3-exclusive, Final Fantasy Versus XIII. We also don't expect any new titles to be revealed, and to be brutally frank, this isn't what we wanted from Square-Enix at TGS 2008. Sure, PSP owners might be satisfied with Dissidia and Final Fantasy Agito XIII, but PS3 owners are going to be disappointed. Again.

So far in this generation, we've noticed a growing trend: PS3 fans haven't been happy with the news that typically comes from the Square-Enix camp, and RPG fans are starting to turn more towards other Japanese developers/publishers like Atlus and Level 5. We had really hoped Square-Enix would have something special for us at TGS 2008, to help restore a little faith...sadly, it seems we're going home empty-handed. Again.

Disclaimer- Just so you know, we still can't wait for FFXIII. We're sure it's going to be amazing.

FF is (usually) great stuff. I cannot say that riding that one franchise is going to be enough for SE. Level-5 rules!

I'm with you on that one, Ben. Everything said is true. I'm looking at other companies now that they screwed around with XIII, but I know XIII is going to kick so much ass on the PS3. And they've been releasing more titles on the 360 so now it just seems like they are moving towards the 360. Well, good for them. All the good die-hard and hardcore fans are on the PS3, specifically for Final Fantasy.

I'm really looking forward to Dissidia, and of course FFXIII! But I think Dissidia should be coming out sooner, that is if the Japanese release date holds true for the US as well...

the guys at S.E must have found the PS3 harder to program for than they initially anticipated. its time for us to look for a S.E replacement. wonder if Level5 is gonna be the new S.E

I started to care less about Final Fantasy, I just feel they are more and more commercialized and tailored towards North America taste and trend, the classic JRPG story, game play, the depth of the game, the music, these are wut actually made Squaresoft (not square enix ) great! with Sakaguchi and Uematsu are gone, I am looking forward to Mistwalker and hope the Lost Odyssey become the new rule of JRPG franchise.

The KH team is developing vXIII

it's going to be similar, but quite a bit darker. So far, it's above XIII on my WANT list.

Hey it wouldn't be a gameshow without sque-nix spitting on ps3 owners, but i think sony should start to back atlus, nis, level 5, and the smaller companies more so if/when they become bigger they'll help sony out

X-2 was disastrous! But i'll spare you from another one of thoughs rants. For me alot is riding on the 3 FF titles, I really need an overly satisfying title; Which in my opinion hasnt happened since X. I'm interested in Dissidia & i'll buy it when released but my attention for Sqaure-Enix is focused on XIII

I feel so shafted by Square.

People speculate that Square is releasing FFXIII for 360 simply to broaden its audience and gain more sales. How, then, do you explain the exclusives being developed for 360? How do you explain Star Ocean 4, or Infinite Undiscovery? You can't. Square was more than capable of developing those games using its White Engine, making the game available for both PS3 and 360 users.

Instead they leave PS3 users in the shadows, longing for a half-decent RPG. Curse Squenix!!!

Look, i own a PS3 and not a 360.
I agree that Square Enix should make more games for PS3 but does it really matter if some games are for 360? It's just to shut those fanboys up.

Why? Besides vXIII what exclusives does SquEnix have for the PS3 so far?

I think the core of the problem is that Sony fans feel betrayed because we are the ones who made SquEnix as big as it is and now the company has turned its back on us.

I know I do, and I also have a 360. Maybe I shouldn't have bought Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, or Infinite Undiscovery (stupid title); but at least I bought them used so SquEnix and Microsoft don't make money on them. And I know BD and IU aren't SquEnix games, but they might as well be considering who created them.

Anyway, what I don't understand is how SquEnix can turn its back on Sony considering Sony is a shareholder.

Glad to see I am not the only one who has "moved on". Will I buy 13? Absolutely, and Versus is a must have for me (which ironically I always like better). Though Square is a shell of their former selves since the Enix merger. All they put out is sequels, which for Final Fantasy is necessary but remember the days when Square was known for Xenogears, Parasite Eve, Valkyrie Profile, Vagrant Story, FF: Tactics and Chrono Cross? Almost every game they put out was original and/or fresh in some way. Now, we get endless sequels and spin offs with the only original titles apprearing on the DS (Sigma Harmonics and TWEWY). Thats not even touching on the fact that Square's internal developers just stink anymore, with Tetsuya Nomura being the ONLY exception. Tri-Ace has been on a downward spiral since Star Ocean 2 (3 was terrible) and Star Ocean 4.....have you seen the trailer? They talk about and actually say WMD's (weapons of Mass Destruction)I felt like I was watching a opening to one of Ol' G. Dubyah's speaches. It felt so tacted on like they were catering to the stereotype that all Americans are gun loving jarheads. Infinite Undiscovery (tri-ace again) is total garbage, the story was full of cheap overdone inuendo and a confused horn dog teenager. Last Remnant just looks bad, from what we know of the battle system I am not too confident with this one either. Squares stuff use to be epic, what happened? Look at Level 5's recent announcements, all new IP's all which look fantastic and one which is a partnership with Studio Ghibli, that should tell you Square is not the biggest and best in Japan anymore. Atlus has the Persona series which is loved both here and Japan along with other Shin Megami Tensei titles. Outside of 13, the other Nomura projects, Square is looking pretty sad these days.

Maybe we should cut them some slack guys, I mean sure, they ditched us, but remember, 6 FF's ago, they did that to Nintendo, due to the fact that Sony simply had a better platform. Maybe SE just thinks the 360 is better then the PS3, and decided to move on. Sure FF13 and V13 were originally meant to be PS3 exclusive, but I doubt it would have went on for long. I mean they sold out to Microsoft, but that's just their plan to westernize. And about all this stuff about them not being innovative, ease up a bit, they've had so many great ideas in the past, they had to run out at some point. All I'm saying is that SE is doing to us what they did to Nintendo, and we may just have to accept that.

No, it's because the Nintendo 64 decided to go for cartridges which Square was pissed about. N64 cartridge= 64 MB Compact Disc= 700MB
Final Fantasy VII was delayed due to N64 being delayed. But it was good to make Square Enix realize that PlayStation was the way to go back then.

Do yourself a favor and don't expect much. Honestly all their giant announcements are nothing more than hype. Remember their "BIG" FFVII announcement <....< Honestly, you think they didn't know what the fans got running through their minds when they said that? Anywayz - their last announcements were all super disappointing and yeah SO4 FFXIII = 360 was OVER-whelming (yes I DO know the latter is also on the PS3... but if they announced SO4 on that day for the PS3 aswell then maybe I wouldn't be so disappointed)

Good comments people, though I can't agree with you all, I think most of us can agree that if you were a fan of Squaresoft you can see how Enix has poisoned them against us. To put it frankly, I feel like I've been cheated on. People will point to when they shifted from Nintendo to Sony, but that was because Ninty went back on the CD platform for N64 and FFVII wasn't possible on a cartridge. So don't gimme that. This is a straight up douchebag issue, the loss of the visionaries at SE has left us with nothing but douchebags. And I agree whole heartedly that pandering to Xbots must have something nefarious behind it. I for one really liked Star Ocean III (TEOT) and sticking the direct sequel on a system whose company and fans had nothing to do with their previous SO success is just plain jarring. I could go on and on with this issue but I hate reading long posts myself so I'll truncate: mark my words, SE will pay for this treachery as more and more of us turn to Atlus, LV5, etc, and 360 game sales will sag the more they try to cater to westernization.

Lots of PS2 fans went for 360. Not to say I did, that's for sure. I wouldn't get a 360 even if I got it as a gift (unless i could sell it).
