No Sony Press Conference At TGS

Now that many will say E3 is a shadow of its former self, most of those same people will agree that the Tokyo Game Show is the biggest gaming show of the year. However, it seems things are gonna be rather low-key this year, so don't expect much in the way of big announcements. Tough to get those if you don't even hold a press conference...

According to Gamekyo, reporters live at the site have stated that only Microsoft will deliver a press conference at TGS 2008. Sony won't be doing one, and Nintendo isn't even showing up, apparently. However, while we won't be sitting here, watching a live feed or live blog of the conference like we have in the past (and desperately hoping for super-huge news to give our loyal readers), this doesn't mean the party's over. In fact, the party is just beginning; Sony does plan to hold a cocktail party of some kind tomorrow, and of course, they have a huge booth erected on the showroom floor. Let's not forget that we're supposed to hear about many previously unknown titles currently in development, so there's still a chance we'll see a Shadow of the Colossus 2 or Kingdom Hearts III. It's not likely, mind you, but we're just saying so long as Sony is in attendance, showing off games, there's a chance. But as far as an official press conference is concerned, it appears that ain't gonna happen. Guess they just figured, "we hand out news on a daily basis these days, so what's the point?"

Oh, and not to ruffle any feathers or anything, but some on-site reporters have noticed that Square-Enix and Microsoft's booths are right next to each other, and evidently, they're holding some kind of joint drawing. We're not sure what it's for - a contest of some kind, obviously - but it seems S-E and Microsoft are all buddy-buddy over there at TGS. ...anybody surprised?

The proximity of the SE and Microsoft booths certainly doesn't seem to be accidental. They've kind of casually hinted that there will be a playable surprise of some sort. Most people seem to be guessing at FFXIII 360 (which would be odd considering it still isn't planned for a Japan release, unless that's what they're unveiling) or, naturally, the old FFVII remake rumour that accompanies everything mysterious SE ever do.

That would be bizarre considering SE haven't even started on the 360 version yet, but mind you, this is SE we're talking about...

That's what people have been saying, that even though SE have said they haven't even started development on the 360 it wouldn't be out of character for them to have been stretching the truth a little. If there genuinely is something big and surprising then it could only really revolve around FFXIII, FFVII or a brand new exclusive game.

It's possible that more is being read into this into this than it deserves. Perhaps it will be one of the multiformat games we already know about, but only playable on 360 at TGS. Microsoft can't build every press event around big Square-Enix announcements.

Its sad to see a company you've been loyal to since you were a small child just straight up abandon you like a demented old circus monkey. I don't wanna wax emotional on the issue but if it weren't for whatever's left of the Final Fantasy series they are treating us pretty much like Valve does. Doesn't sit well with me. Back on topic: I can see why Sony wouldn't hold a Press Junket but even a short one would've been nice, not everyone scours the net for new game news like we do. It's no good to let M$ dominate these game shows, sends the wrong message. I'll be waiting on pins and needles for another buyout deathblow to the gaming community from the power-mad M$. Maybe this time they got their grubby hands on Versus XIII.

I'm jealous. I live outside of Boston, US. Very soon I will be brought to the edge of my life with dangerous road conditions, careless drivers, and freezing weather cold enough to cause infertility.

I think it would've been nice to have a Sony press, even if it was small, like WorldEndsWithMe states. Just the fact that they're acknowledging us and proving that they can dominate is always more preferable than nothing at all. But whatever. I think even if M$'s conference isn't all that great, there still a bump up from Sony in this particular event, imho.

Anyone consider maybe M$ paying S-E for a FFVII remake for the 360??its quite possible..more space than the previous disk on the playstation..not as much on a bluray but its still bigger...only a matter of time..i personally cudnt care less as i cant stand FF.
As for Sony not having a news conference up at TGS..we have over 40 games coming out in october for you all...play and be happy. We all know thats what gamers realy want!!

I think the rights to FFVII are owned by Sony because they published the game, but I could be wrong. I hope I'm not wrong...

At Press conferences its all about business and figures, they only show games because the gaming public are interested in watching and we want to see games. We may not see Sony top the conference when they first shown LBP? If Sony was to do a conference what really will they talk about? the same old, figures etc. eith a few games.
Sony has many games coming and quite a few unannounced games. So Sony could do an amazing conference if they only shown what games are coming and all the games yet to be anounced. 30 minutes of showing and talking games. M$ couldn't compete.

@bamf - I completely agree with you, but maybe the Japanese don't care as much about RFOM2, Killzone 2, Socom as we do. That's probably why.

But that would be awesome, 30 minutes of amazing footage from the exclusives Sony has planned for the future.

If SE is making Versus multiplat I'm going to buy an RPG just for the irony of the weapon's name and go blow then up. Okay, maybe not, I love FF to much for that, multiplat or not; but really, why do they do this to us? Sony should try to buy SE just to give MS a taste of it's own medicine. As for the no press conference thing, it doesn't bother me that much, I already have to many games to buy and too little m,oney anyways.

ok the thought of S-E doing a remake of final fantasy 7 on 360 only would piss way to many people off. if you think their losing respect now just see what happens if they ever did do something like that. ive always liked square and ill admit that their business practices lately have bin questionable but if they do something like that their cutting their throats.

Ok, now I have 2 situations where I would ignore SE. 1: They make a FF7 remake, exclusive to the 360. 2: They make KH3 360 exclusive. And if V13 goes multiplat, i'll still be pretty pissed. SE is turning into a bunch of sellouts, and I'm not happy about it.
