New Castlevania Coming For PS3, 360

There hasn't been much in the way of earth-shattering announcements at TGS 2008, but we do have good news for old-school fans who appreciate the continuation of classic franchises.

According to UK site Dark Zero, Konami revealed at the show they plan to resurrect the long-running and critically acclaimed Castlevania franchise for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Apparently, they announced the game to the Japanese press and the project was referred to as, "Demon Castle Dracula," which is simply the Japanese name for "Castlevania." In 22 years, Konami has released 29 iterations of the name, and most gamers only have one problem with that: the later 3D installments weren't half as good as the amazing 2D entries, like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night on the PS1 and the trio of GBA titles that received excellent review scores. Personally, I want them to return to the 2D world, but if it's for the PS3 and 360, that probably won't happen...unless they decide to make it as a downloadable title for the Store and Marketplace. They could very easily produce an excellent two-dimensional adventure for a budget price, and it's something that would certainly appeal to long-time followers of the series.

There are no additional details at this time, although you can check out one blurry screenshot over at Dark Zero. Doesn't tell us much, but at this point, we're just happy to hear that another Castlevania is on the way.

Wow very cool! Great news Ben as I am a huge fan of the Castlevania series. I hope its 2D too since Symphony of the Night is one of my top games of all time.

I wish it was 2D. Doubt it. Wasn't there an interview with some guy from konami about 6 months ago and he was talking about a castlevania and saying they would like it to compete with God of War? Maybe I'm crazy and just made it up.

Anyway, that screenshot in the link you posted is definitely in 3D and it looks like Alucard. Could be a pre-rendered cutscene in between some awesome 2D action. Haha, I remain doubtful.

I remember playing a Castlevania game on the PS1 years ago. It will be interesting to see what they come out with.

I'll gladly take another Castlevania title. Though I agree that the 3d versions were pretty horrible. I'd love to see them make a 2d entry for the PS3. Can you imagine how massive a 2d game could be on a blu-ray disc? Brings chills down the spine just trying to fathom that concept lol.

I liked the first Castlevania for the DS, when I had my DS. If it's going to be similar to that I'll be excited. Also, if they take on a re-make of some sort and enhance it, similar to that of Bionic Commando: Rearmed, I would also be very pleased. Something new would be cool too, but yeah, as long as it's 2D. AND as long as it's nothing like the PSP version. Wasn't the biggest fan of that one.

i wouldn't mind them taking a Bionic Commando: Rearmed approach to this.

might start to get others to follow suit. 2.5D could start to become my favorite kind of title. Imagine a Metroid or even LOZ redone in 2.5D. Absolutely amazing.

*crosses fingers*

While I agree that 2D would probably be best, I still think its possible to bring this game to 3D without royally screwing it up. How to do that? I'll leave it up to Konami, but I won't count this one out if it turns out to be 3D. Actually it would be awesome if they "resurrected" Castlevania: Resurrection. Many may not recall but it was the iteration slated for the Dreamcast, the gameplay footage looked great, but alas it was abandoned.

SOTN! One of the best games ever. I was just wondering what happened to that franchise. The PS3 version should be good stuff.

I am thrilled about this news. Castlevania series are my all time favorite Action/Arcade game, nothing can compare to that in that category. The only game next to it is Devil May Cry series which is another very Gothic type series with big cathedral and medieval feeling.

I wish Castlevania return to 2D too, but it is a dilemma as I think--if it is 2D on a PS3, it probably wont be able to use much of the PS3 power, for I think the ps1 Symphony of the Night's screen quality is already among the best in 2D graphics, therefore, it will be a waste to use PS3 to play a 2D Castlevania. Long words short, if it is a new Castlevania on PS3 (not re-make of the past series), then the game will maximize the PS3's power when it is a 3D, but then again the problem becomes--how good it will be comparing to the 2D legendary series. The two PS2 games, Lament of Innocence and the Curse of the Darkness, while they are good, they certainly can not be claimed as legendary and classic.

I am really curious to see how it will look like on PS3 tho.
