White Knight Details: Create-a-Combo, 4-Player Online Quests

If you've been following along, you knew Level 5's White Knight Chronicles would appear at TGS 2008, and so it has.

Sadly, they didn't provide us with a North American release date, but they did hand out a few never-before-heard details that ought to satisfy RPG fans. First of all - and we just think this is really cool - you'll actually be able to "create and name your own combinations" with the combo attack system. We're not sure how complex this system will be, but the very idea is music to our customizing-happy ears. Players will also be able to share the save data with others; money and items can be shared in both online and offline multiplayer modes. As for the online mode, some of you have asked if the developers will include a MMO-like feature, and the answer to that is apparently both "yes" and "no." We just learned that co-op gameplay will be offered over the PSN, but what we didn't know is that this will allow up to 16 players to hop into the Lobby, with 4 players each assigned to a Quest room. If you've played a MMO in the past, you know that cooperative quests are the backbone of the game, so we suppose this might qualify as "massively multiplayer online," even though it's not a huge seamless world where all players run around at the same time.

So that's the update for now, although we'd like to know if this game has reverted back to the original title of White Knight Story. We were under the impression that Level 5 had changed it to White Knight Chronicles earlier this year, but now, it seems as if half the sources say Story and the other half say Chronicles. Damnit, make up your mind!

I want this one so badly! Online co-op is a really cool idea too. I don't know exactly how they're gonna pull it off, but I know the only reason I played Tales of Symphonia so much was because I could goof off with my friends.

Yea I read the whole thing over at official PS blog, many awesome details, this just have a Final Fantasy vide over it. Just to compare to something similar.

Need North American release date now.

Edit: Please check the thread I made in the forums for this awesome title.

Chronicles could imply a continuation of the story in the future. I hope it is released in the spring for the US, but probably not.

Maybe they want to keep from being mixed up with Sega's Valkyria Chronicles, ya know, too many chronicles and all that. I know my archnemesis PSU has been calling it Story. I was really hoping for a NA release date though, maybe they aren't done with the English voices yet. I don't just want this game, I REQUIRE it. Hope they get a move on, but I don't want bad acting ya know?

Ben I read on other sites about the 16 players rooms and 4 teams. I don't remember which ones, but it WAS reported. Just sayin'.

Nice. Offline multiplayer modes? Yay, that 2nd PS3 controller I bought wasn't a waste of money after all!

WKC sounds pretty promising. Hopefully this will turn into a series.

this is the biggest ps3 rpg I am expecting now, i put the expectation even above the final fantasy 13 and versus 13, in terms of the gameplay and story.

Square-Enix has not come up any deep intriguing final fantasy stories since FF10. I don't want another big grand opening and eye-candy graphics and characters show at the opening and then nothing else after. Dont want that again, Infinite Undiscovery is another one of them. I am counting more on Versus 13 between the two (ff13 vs ff versus 13). But WKC is on the top my list, no doubt about it.
