New RE5 Controls Exhibit Fresh Action-Oriented Focus
Last week, we learned that Capcom would be overhauling the control scheme once again for Resident Evil 5. Obviously, franchise followers were well aware of the significant changes made to the excellent fourth iteration, and once again, Capcom apparently wants a more streamlined approach to the action-oriented gameplay.
As you can see by this control scheme layout (pic from Joystiq), the RE designers are still trying to move away from the awkwardness and clunkiness of yesteryear. Not only can you strafe - hey, what a novelty! - but there are several other points of interest. You may notice the run and quick turn options down in the lower left, and although we were able to run in RE4, that quick turn option should come in mighty handy. There are going to be more than a few adversaries looking to gnaw on your neck, so fast turnarounds will probably be essential. Also, it seems you will be working with a partner quite often, as those two options on the right indicate: you can either locate your partner if he or she has wandered off, or you can execute what appears to be a team action maneuver. We assume this means that both of you perform a special attack at the same time, which is another very cool addition. Everything else seems like pretty standard stuff, but it's very clear that Capcom is no longer interested in making us feel slow and perhaps slightly disoriented during battle.
And yes, we realize that's a 360 controller up there, but of course, the control options will be the same for the PS3. The only difference will be the mapping of the commands, but those are typically customizable, anyway. We definitely can't wait to get our hands on Resident Evil 5, that's for damn sure.
