New RE5 Controls Exhibit Fresh Action-Oriented Focus

Last week, we learned that Capcom would be overhauling the control scheme once again for Resident Evil 5. Obviously, franchise followers were well aware of the significant changes made to the excellent fourth iteration, and once again, Capcom apparently wants a more streamlined approach to the action-oriented gameplay.

As you can see by this control scheme layout (pic from Joystiq), the RE designers are still trying to move away from the awkwardness and clunkiness of yesteryear. Not only can you strafe - hey, what a novelty! - but there are several other points of interest. You may notice the run and quick turn options down in the lower left, and although we were able to run in RE4, that quick turn option should come in mighty handy. There are going to be more than a few adversaries looking to gnaw on your neck, so fast turnarounds will probably be essential. Also, it seems you will be working with a partner quite often, as those two options on the right indicate: you can either locate your partner if he or she has wandered off, or you can execute what appears to be a team action maneuver. We assume this means that both of you perform a special attack at the same time, which is another very cool addition. Everything else seems like pretty standard stuff, but it's very clear that Capcom is no longer interested in making us feel slow and perhaps slightly disoriented during battle.

And yes, we realize that's a 360 controller up there, but of course, the control options will be the same for the PS3. The only difference will be the mapping of the commands, but those are typically customizable, anyway. We definitely can't wait to get our hands on Resident Evil 5, that's for damn sure.

I might get this for ps3 due to better lighting,i don't find cell-shadin in such locations like Africa attractive. In games where the Sun is emphasized i find ps3 havin the upper hand.

But when exactly is RE 5 comin out?

i don't think cel shaded rendering is done in this game. its more often found in games like naruto and dragon ballZ than in FPS games

It comes out in March, i believe mid march. It looks pretty good. I would recommend it for the ps3, even though -some- of it for both consoles will be identical.

I'd expect them to look identical, since there is no porting going on here. Differences in multi-plat games are extremely subjective and often based on people comparing images from different TV screens. Glad I'm not an Xbot, that controller is so cumbersome.

No Fanboys here so leave those comments at the door, and yes there in fact is online co op a first for the series. A pretty good idea I must say.

I'm a fanboy. Are you kidding me? I love my PS3. My console of choice for RE5.

And Gamecube was my console of choice for RE4... not that brutal PS2 port.

I cant wait to get this game with my brother, we'll be kickin' some A$$ up in there. Im so glad they implemented co-op, and it really works. Im not hugely concerned with the controls changing as long as it plays comfortably, and me and my bro have a good time. Come on March. :P

I'm so excited for Resident Evil 5, I've been a fan since the first one and I've played them since I was like 8. So stoked. So, so stoked.
