New Ridge Racer 7 Details
Despite Ted Price's best efforts, it's likely that Resistance: Fall of Man won't be the biggest title for the PS3 launch in Japan. And unless Genji: Days of the Blade is a massive sleeper hit, Bandai Namco's Ridge Racer 7 will probably be the most popular title, and thanks to a recent Famitsu interview with RR producer Hedeo Teramoto, we've got some more juicy updates for ya.
Teramoto appeared to be more than satisfied with the game's technical prowess; he emphasized that "no other machine in the world" was capable of producing Ridge Racer 7's eye-titillating combo of 1080p and 60 FPS. He also made mention of the game's 5.1 support for the soundtrack and sound effects.
But perhaps equally important is the fully-realized online experience offered by the racer, as Teramoto indicated. The title sports the same 14 player races RR 6 offered on the 360, but the game's producer feels the experience has "evolved beyond" that. Gamers will compete against other gamers for money and rank, and there's no separation between the primary mode and "online mode." Your acquired money and rank are used for both modes.
Teramoto also confirmed that the game will make good use of the PS3's hard disk. Obviously, it'll be used for saving and downloadable content, but RR7 should also utilize the hard disk for speeding up the gameplay. It's got a pretty massive install, though: 5 gigabytes.
Furthermore, the functionality of the hard disk might even increase considering Bandai Namco's donwload agenda. Teramoto plans to make stickers, music, and race events available for download, and those events will be free at the PlayStation Store. The new music tracks will cost a bit extra, though, but Teramoto hopes to produce a variety of tracks that make it worth the price.
In terms of replay capability and lasting appeal, Teramoto concluded by saying he expects players to get a "full half-year of play time" from Ridge Racer 7, which is quite the span of time. However, if everything comes together as nicely as reported, than that's not an entirely unappealing thought.
