NPD Sept. 08: Xbox 360 Outsells PS3, Slow Game Month
Sony's on-going superb performance with the PlayStation 3 has finally come to an end, as the price-drop of the Xbox 360 finally allowed Microsoft to outsell Sony's blackbox by over 100k consoles for the month of September. The Xbox 360 took home 347k unit sales, to the PlayStation 3's 232.5k consoles. Still, considering one console starts at $200 and the other one at $400, the PlayStation 3 continues to perform extremely well for Sony. Furthermore, September was a rather boring month in terms of PS3 games and that didn't help sales of the console one bit. Look for October's numbers to be brighter, as the launch of SOCOM, MotorStorm, and LittleBigPlanet should fuel sales of the system. But it remains to be seen if October's games will be enough to put Sony at the top over Microsoft again.
As far as the lower-spec consoles go, the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS are still kings of the hill. The Wii waggled 687k units into the hands of gamers, and the Nintendo DS is currently touching the lives of 537k new owners. The PSP continues to show strong potential, as 238k handheld units were picked up from the shelves, and the aging PlayStation 2 moves another 173.5k for Sony. With the holidays brewing, the competition is only heating up. September was a weak month for blockbuster games, but October and November will be changing all of that. The next three NPD charts should certainly be interesting.
Nintendo Wii 687.0K
Nintendo DS 536.8K
Xbox 360 347.2K
Sony PSP 238.1K
PlayStation 3 232.4K
PlayStation 2 173.5K

Do games sell systems anymore? look at the Wii, not one game in sight yet sell more than half a mill a month, its all down to price especially with this credit crunch and the rest. Can people really afford a $400 system with $60 a game to go with it?

And believe me, no one but the developers are happy about multi plats. I own both consoles and I hate multiplats. Especially delayed multiplats like Bioshock. I wouldn't have played it on the 360 if I knew I could get a longer game waiting for the PS3 version.
But October should be a lot better for PS3 with the MGS4 numbers. What has the 360 got? Fracture...Which sems cool, but its not MGS4. Well, that and RB2, but anyone who got RB1 for the PS3 is waiting for it instead of switching consoles.

About the sales,i know 2 chaps, one who is buying a third 360 n the other a second one,so im thinking a quarter or mo of xbox sales are from people replacing their bricked system, besides, people will realize that the $200 xbox is'nt as cheap as ms claims it to be (internet connectively n a hard disc)

There is no way it can compete against a console that can play the same games for $200 less. There needs to be a price cut. We all know that the PS3 is a better value, but regular folk don't care.

Let's be real. Socom isn't going to make someone go out and buy a PS3. LBP will. Motorstorm isn't. I was very excited about Motorstorm 2 until I got my hands on Pure. I'm sure 360 owners can live without Motorstorm 2. And RFOM2 is going to be awesome but so is GOW3. And it's a lot more popular.
All I have seen lately on TV is 360 commercials saying NOW $199
I don't have any doubt that the PS3 will be selling well if you take into consideration how much more it costs, but I really don't see it topping the 360 again anytime soon. I hope I'm wrong, but I dunno.
Come on, it's even being outsold by the 360 in Japan.

The PS3 easily has a good chance at momentum. Especially after 02/09.
With a number of people forced into HDTVs because everything is going with a digital broadcast, people will realize that DVDs can't match the quality of a Bluray disc. IIRC, the PS3 is still the cheapest BD 2.0 compatable player (BD 2.0 requiring a min of 1GB hdd installed to keep settings for those who might not know).
However, M$ and a slew of other companies are trying to push towards direct dloads instead of using medium. If that really takes hold in this gen of consoles, one of the PS3s main advantages goes away.
The PS3s main problem -- and its too late for this gen -- is that they spent way too much R

konami has mysteriously deleted the line where they said they were considering a 360 port, and speculation of the man called Arai is probably getting into some trouble...or konami just wanna cover up something...

with the price cut no significant sales spike.
by the time people start to realize that you still need to get extral accessories for the game, they would definately begin to back out.
it just a temporary measure that cant last.
october ps3 sale sholud come as a shocker!
trust me.
meanwhile, ps3 sales didnt reduce in sales.
bravo! sony

no one is being forced into hdtv, its digital tv,big difference.Besides, cable companies are protecting their consumers, only the chaps using antennas will be affected.
Just a thought but, what if Sony used to treat developers like crap back in the ps2 era? maybe that explains the hostility of some developers towards the ps3

Yes, technically DTV includes EDTV as well as HDTV, but what does EDTV carry? 480p, 480p widescreen, and 545p/i. No one uses 480pw or 545p/i. And very few will take their 480i broadcasts and upconvert them, reducing their quality.
And no way will cable/sat companies survive standard definition channels after consumers realize that free local channels have better quality at a much reduced price.

I know Sony has a crapload of great exclusives lined up; but that only matters to we hardcore gamers, who will find a way to buy the PS3 anyway. But to the average joe, the deciding factor will ALWAYS be price, not feature sets and better overall value. We PS3/Sony supporters, as well as Sony, need to look at the bigger picture, which includes a soft economy right now. And no amount of great exclusive games will overcome that price deficit.
I reiterate, Sony needs a PS3 price cut now!

(From The Magic Box) Here are the latest console hardware sales from Japan for the week of Oct 6 - 12:
NDS Lite - 31,914 [2,245,049]
PSP - 23,901 [2,681,966]
Wii - 22,877 [2,101,752]
Xbox 360 - 7,763 [185,745]
PlayStation 2 - 6,982 [367,822]
PlayStation 3 - 5,734 [642,803]
This means M$ft has been regularly beating Sony in weekly sales in the U.S, Japan, and Europe since the 360 price cut.
See what I'm writing above. The PS3 was outselling the 360 for most of 2008, but all that Sony momentum stopped cold in its tracks with the 360 price cut.

But I really don't see PS3 outselling the 360 by much in the next few months.
@Joe - You're assuming consumers want and NEED the clearest of pictures. Most don't really care. If they did, the Wii wouldn't be selling so well.

Nintendo's Wii sits atop the console wars simply because Nintendo designed and marketed a console that fit nicely into people's strapped budget and by doing that they made the Wii affordable for most to buy.
Sony on the other hand designed a console with bells and whistles that sound good but weren't cost effective and as a result while the PS3 does sell, it isn't selling at the rate that say the PS2 did at the same time in the PS2's life cycle.
If Sony wants to prevent being in 3rd place, they better cut the price again on the PS3 to at least around $250.
At $199, the 360 is a good buy and by doing digging around, you can find an affordable HDD for 360.
Sony keeps selling bundles that cost upwards of $500 plus and in these tough economic times, people just aren't willing to part with that kind of money when they have other pressing important things to do.
