Valkyria Chronicles A Sleeper Hit?

With so many fantastic games hitting store shelves for the PlayStation 3 between October and November, it's easy to get distracted by the blockbusters. But certain titles may go undeservedly ignored if we're not careful, which is why we're turning your attention to Valkyria Chronicles.

We at PSXE have never really classified this Japanese strategy/RPG as a potential gem, and now we may have to admit our mistake. Early feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, including the GamePlayer review, where it actually says Valkyria Chronicles is "almost worth buying a PS3 for." They give it an 8.5, and we can add even more critical goodness to that: the Official PlayStation Magazine handed out a glowing 4.5/5 review, RPGFan gave it an 8.8, and Euragamer gave it an 8.0. For a title that typically doesn't sit as well with North American and European critics - seemingly designed more for Japanese audiences - this is excellent news, especially for fans of the niche genre. Remember, this is a PS3 exclusive, and the only other option available is Eternal Sonata, which is a fine game from what we hear, but it was out on the Xbox 360 last year. Hence, many have already had the opportunity to play it.

The only downside is that Valkyria Chronicles is scheduled to launch on the same day as Resistance 2 (November 4), which means it'll certainly be overshadowed by Insomniac's massively anticipated sequel. However, this is the reason we're alerting you to Valkyria's excellence: if you're a fan of the strategy and/or RPG genre, and you're a PS3 owner, you've been frustrated at the lack of games in your favorite category. But here's one game that should slake your thirst!

Last warning. Nobody here wanders around yelling about how great the PS3 is and how crappy the 360 is; if they do, I put a stop to it.

Like I'm putting a stop to YOU if you don't stop talking about "how you should act at a PlayStation site."

@FLYING_APE The only hate I have is for your stupid posts! Go back to posting on Gamespot.

On another note,I played the demo for Valkyria Chronicles and loved it! This game is a must buy for me.

There was no fecking mention of the Xbox anywhere in the article, you're so much of a nuisance I can't even lurk without feeling compelled to counter your idiocy.

By the way, this game had previously gotten my attention by the art style, and I didn't really know anything about the game other than it was 'an RPG'. After playing the demo I found it was nothing like what I expected (in a good way), and I do plan to buy this when it comes out. :P

Man I really should have bought this instead of farcry2. If I have money I will definitely get this game. I loved the demo soo much. I almost cry everytime I watch the intro cinematic. And the gameplay is so fun that I played the demo lvl 10 times already.

I played the demo from the PSN the other day, and it does seem pretty promising, Im not big into those type of strategy games, but if I were to sit down with this one, that may change. It also doesnt help that its really nice to look at either :D

I liked the demo, however I dunno whether it has enough replay value or not, since there are only skirmish mode and campaign mode.
On a side note, I'd love to see more full blown games be released on the PSN and Valkyria Chronicles, should be downloadable in the near future.

I'm pretty sure I heard its a location by location thing like tactics.(ie not an open world) But that shouldn't really stop you from loving this game.

I wasn't giving this game a chance. Then I played the demo. Now I'm craving the full game.

I'd pick this one up over Eternal Sonata. I'm just more interested in the gameplay.

The strength of the characters and how their personality traits and quirks come into play in battle is what really grabbed me about this title. If I weren't dirt poor, I would snap it up on Day 1. Alas. I'll have to wait to get it from Gamefly.

I'm downloading the Demo right now, I've been checking for it every day. I'm really digging on Eternal Sonata but I hope this one goes well since I tend to like less than half of the strategy games half as much as they deserve. WHAT people are ignoring here (but I think PSXE did report on) is the BIGGER story in this title. That is of course the cameo appearances of Vyse and Aika from Skies of Arcadia, if that isn't an introduction of hype for another Skies title then I don't know what is. That was the best. Dreamcast game. Ever.

This and Eternal Sonata have both been on my radar. However, I only have enough money for 2 games and one of those slots is reserved for Fallout 3. After the demo I can't help but tilt in favor of this game.

I am downloading the demo too. I did not put too much expectation on it before cuz the cartoonish look RPG usually does not go my way (hence I am not a Disgaea fan), however, since the demo is out, it does not hurt to try. Eternal Sonata and this one might be the dawn after the darkness in the "PS3 JRPG land". We will see the true light when WKC and The last Remnant and FF13 are released. :D

Valkyria Chronicles is one of the best RPG games you can get your hands on. Storyline and character development is very deep and you'll get attached easily to it. Tactical battles are superb, the demo is NOTHING like the gameplay and just as you all know this, the graphics are freaking superb! Nothing like you have ever seen in any gaming console, and the engine was specifically designed for the PS3. I'm getting this with R2, and you bet I'm playing this game and draining as much power of my PS3 as possible to beat it.

This game was received well but thats not the reason I would like to pick up a copy. Finally a quality RPG, and maybe I won't suck as much as I usually do on RPG's.
