Sony: "One Thing To Remember, Nothing Is Ever Exclusive"

Obviously, many PS3 owners were a little miffed to hear about the deal Microsoft made to secure exclusive rights to downloadable content for Grand Theft Auto IV. But as you should know - and as Sony UK managing director Ray Maguire reminds us - "nothing is ever exclusive" this generation.

According to Videogamer.com, Maguire was speaking at the recent Gamer 3.0 conference in London, and he was asked about Microsoft nailing down exclusive DLC for games like GTAIV, Fallout 3 and Tomb Raider: Underworld. In response, Maguire said Sony is more interested in "investing money into making sure" they have top-notch R&D so they can create and produce games like LittleBigPlanet. In addition:

"One thing to remember, nothing is ever exclusive. Things get wrapped up for a period of time for a large amount of money and if it's a strategic decision by competition to do that then we have to live with that."

Well, that seems to be the way of things this generation. True third-party exclusivity may be dead; only timed exclusivity is left. Earlier this year, SCEE boss David Reeves said PS3 owners can "probably expect to see" GTAIV DLC at some point, and it should be just another example of timed exclusive content. On the other hand, with Sony refusing to pay out for this stuff, some PS3 owners continue to wonder why they have to wait for certain things... Well, as Sony says, do you want LittleBigPlanet, or not?

I dunno how it looks from Sony's side, but I know I'd rather Sony put out LBP and I'll just get my DLC from MS.

Although I thought I remembered Rockstar saying they were planning DLC for the PS3, it was just gonna be smaller and take longer to get out because the DLC deal they had with MS was somewhat big...

Sony is the Best they have been Owing 08 looks like they will be owino9 as well with games like MAG,Infamous,Heavy Rain, God of War 3,Quantum Theory,Drakes Fortune 2,Jak 4, Final Fantasy Versus 13...just to name a great few.. o9 looks so sweet

That's a bit extreme... Hardware-wise it's impossible... No matter how much MS says the 360 can do it.
But hey, I could be wrong... the 360 might have more than 3 processors....

This is sad
It's one thing for a game to be multi-platform from the beginning.

But it's another thing when the ps3 has these exclusives and then lose them OUT OF NOWHERE.

"Things get wrapped up for a period of time for a large amount of money" This is an excellent subtle dig at certain nasty little bribes going around by a company that shall remain nameless. Although it does bother me that Sony can't or won't keep up with exclusivity deals, I see now later in the gen that that money IS best being spent elsewhere, namely on games published by any of the MANY in-house developers (Which are almost always quality) MGS4 is an excellent feather in our caps and I don't see it going anywhere, but future titles will likely go to the 720 as well. As long as Sony can fund the in-house projects then I think we are all on solid ground with the future firmly in front of us unlike said unnamed company that must leech off 3rd party to get anywhere.

as far as the 720 goes...

the one and only thing Sony needs to do to strangle the 720 is deny M$ a BD drive. in the next gen, It wont be able to compete without something bigger than a DVD.

Naa... Microsoft will try to get the HVD on their side. (holographic versatile disc). but they'll be forking out $15000US for one drive and $180US for one disc. XD

If someone paid anyone of us the money that some of these companies are being paid to make exclusive DLC or to have a game be exclusive for a certain amount of time who here could say they would ignore the almighty dollar?

Especially when the global market is in the shape it is right now?

I am not saying its right but when you force 90% of the people who buy a computer to also give you a chunk of money you can throw the revenue where ever you like

No exclusive content for GTA IV yet for 360. That's one, and two ... my brother and I could really careless for "timed exclusive" for other games when we get our game on the PS3. Because in the end, we ARE playing the game that we want, and we're not super-freaking hardcore to want every-bits and pieces. With the many games, and the little time ... no thank you.

I find it comical that M$ needs to buyout exclusive DLC for games anymore. Shows us that they are concerned in where they stand this generation. Yet, at the same time, it really freaking annoys the hell out of me!! I just got Fallout3 for PS3 and now I'm wondering if I'll ever want to play the DLC later, therefore having to purchase the 360 version... but I think I'll keep this copy and show M$ that they can't get my money by getting 'exclusive' DLC. Sorry but it seems rediculous to me.

No exclusives, ok, I understand its all about business and software companies do have a business to run, understand all that. but with that said, I only demand and beg (at the same time)--to keep these exclusives: MGS4, FFv13, GOW3, ICO3, WKC. thats my list.

I wish Sony would buy out Microsoft. Then they could make the ultimate game system that plays xbox, xbox 360, PS3, PS2, and PS1 games. nintendo wouldn't even stand a chance to that!

I don't know about the rest of you, but I never buy a game by reviewing what the DLC will be like....I buy it because I like the game. If it comes with DLC later, great! The only games I look for extra materials on are the Multiplayer online ones anyway (Warhawk anyone?)...because after awhile playing the same maps over and over does get mundane. But by the time GTAIV (or most games for that matter) gets DLC on either system, I'll have already moved on to newer and better games with better gameplay, graphics, etc...But that's just me....

On a side note, Ben I looked at my profile and it says I had a comment removed back in september....I can't remember what it was that I posted. Is there anyway I can find out what that was so I don't do another post like it? or is it pretty much gone..move on? Thanks!

The 360 downloadable content for GTA4 that MS paid for(which includes 2 seperate dlc episodes)IS EXCLUSIVE to the 360.As someone above said, the PS3 version of GTA4 MIGHT receive some lesser DLC but since Sony didn't pay for anythign additional and likely since the 360 version of GTA4 far outsold the PS3 version , it will likely be much smaller and show up only after the 360 exclusive stuff does.

The 360 version of Fallout is also outselling the PS3 version 3 to 1 and according to most reviewrers IS best on the pc,then the 360, with the PS3 having the least polished version, though playability is still excellent for the game on all platforms.
