EA Confirms Thrid Mercs In The Works
This probably won't fall into the "shocker" category, but it's great news for fans of the go-anywhere, blow-crap-up franchise that's zanier than GTA and in some ways, even more brutal than Saints Row.
According to GameSpot, EA has confirmed they plan to make a third Mercenaries title, which follows close on the heels of announcements for Dead Space, Battlefield: Bad Company and Army of Two sequels. During a conference call this past week, EA CEO John Riccitiello revealed that Mercenaries 3 is also in the works at Pandemic Studios, but that's not all. He says that if he gets his way, this franchise will never die: "There will be a Mercenaries 3 and, if I have anything to do with it, there will be a Mercenaries 10," he said. Despite the fact that Mercenaries 2: World in Flames fell short of expectations - and we weren't the only critics to say so - the game still sold very well. As of September 30, EA had sold about 1.9 million copies worldwide, which matches Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09 and isn't far off from Spore's international sales total.
So of course there's going to be another Mercs. And although EA's Q2 financial reports came with a "cost reduction plan" that resulted in 600 layoffs, the company continues to look forward and plan for the future. It's what big corporations do.
