Game On: Resistance 2 And Gears Of War 2 Clash This Week

If you take a look around the Internet today, game sites and forums are ablaze with one prevailing hot topic: this is the week, where two colossal competing exclusives go head-to-head; Resistance 2 for the PlayStation 3 and Gears of War 2 for the Xbox 360.

Going in, there's no question about either game's quality. That simply isn't debatable; both are going to kick serious ass. But the more interesting questions are, "will consumers be able to afford two games in one week, what with the ailing economy?" and "has the PS3's userbase increased enough so a powerful exclusive title can compete in sales with a powerful 360 title?" The latest estimate puts the PS3 at about 17 million units sold worldwide, while the 360 sits at about 24 million. Given the one-year head-start for Microsoft's console, Sony has managed to close the gap relatively quickly, and recent retail statistics indicate the PS3 has continued to - and will continue to - sneak up on the 360. But is it enough? What about advertising campaigns? In your experience, do you see more R2 or Gears 2 ads? It's hard to say, as we've seen both on TV and neither more frequently than the other, and of course, there are ads plastered all over the Internet for both. This week, you can expect stores to have plenty of intriguing promotions, too; like midnight launches, for example.

We're not about to tell you what to do, but the bottom line is that if you can swing it, you should own both. Resistance 2 launches tomorrow and Gears of War 2 hits on the 7th, so you don't have much time to debate. For our part, we've played the R2 beta and we're convinced the game will be incredible, so perhaps the only question left is, "do you prefer a FPS or third-person shooter?" ...this ain't easy. But man, we always love a clash of the titans!

I'm still waiting to get LBP and RB2, they aren't available in Mexico yet!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know I'm psyched. time to party like it's 2006. R2 will definitely make a better showing this time since it's not a launch title, but will it do enough?

I know I've seen a lot more Gears 2 stuff on tv, console neutral websites and such, but I do know that I saw an R2 trailer on TV also, which is a much larger fanbase.

R2 has 400+ hours of coop while Gears 2 has Horde mode. Both have 4 player coop I believe.

As far as I go, it's a tie, cuz I'm picking them both up friday.

I could be wrong, but 360 owners, and gamers in general, are more in to the likes of COD4/5 these days. Gears1 generated huge interest coming in with fantastic graphics and being one of the first AAA titles of this generation, but since then, it has lost much of it's glamour. Will the 2nd reinvigorate the franchise? I'm sure it will be well-received. But with a formula of addiction closer to the frenetic COD4, I think people will be enjoying Resistance 2 more so.

I noticed the advertising on both R2 and Gears to be about the same on TV. I actually spend a lot more time gaming then watching TV.

Oddly enough I've seen Motorstorm Pacific Rift commercials more than the other two combined. I'm glad Sony is pushing this game. I picked it up last Thursday and I absolutely love it. I will get R2 sometime after or hopefully during the holidays.

microsoft is trying to make Gears 2 second HALO. they r spending millions just on marketing.
I think it will sell around 8 million. MS need to teach Sony a marketing lesson. Sony's ads r gay/weird/ugly.Every single xbox exclusive got its own midnight lauch.I'm pretty sure MS paid alot of money to reviewers, just like they did when halo came out.

I haven't played Gears 2 yet but it looks quality. I've always been an insomniac fan ever since the first R&C on PS2, so I know R2 will be a quality game too(played the beta too and it's a load of laughs).

I think the real winner here is the consumer because no matter which one you get they're both excellent games. The question is can you afford it or not? :P

to be honest here in irland i have yet to see any ps3 ads in awhile where there is alot of xbox and fallout and gears ads about.i was actually wondering where the ads where and when where they coming.

PS3 and 360 are really close in Ireland. 50-50. If Sony advertise just a bit they'd have MS. I don't think that RTÉ even show games ads like GeoW and R cus they think it's too violent.

GoW and RFOM were both really good games. I would consider them the pinnacles of their respective genres at the time. Neither one of them is a flash in the pan.

MS has made GoW the Halo of the next-gen, whereas Sony seems to think that R2 will make its own buzz, which is partly true because of the lack of good exclusives for the PS.

But if you look at almost any site (IGN, 1up) what'll yo see? GoW articles and ads.

Do a search for Resistance 2 on kotaku and you get 266 results. Search for Gears of War 2 and you get 453!

I have high hopes for both games,and my heart tends to lean towards first person over third when it comes to shooters. But if I was going to go based on hype alone, I would pick GoW 2 because of so much info that's out there.

Sony: Playing it close to the vest works in poker, but you gotta give us a little more to get excited about.

Why would Sony do that? Sony knows that most of their consumers that are interested in r2 don't buy into hype. So why advertise heavy on a game that's gonna sell like crazy anyway? They advertise on games that they think need some hype because they are unique/fresh (which isn't a bad thing i.e. Motorstorm & LBP).

They know what R2 is gonna do. No need to throw unnecessary ad $$$ at it.

Ummm... Soney needs to step up the advertising for both the console and its games, even the hot ones like RFOM2, to lure in gamers on the fence. Not advertising these games because Sonu knows its hardcore supporters will buy them anyway doesn't make any business sense at all. If Sony wants to GROW its install base, it needs to show people it HAS the games.

By the way, TV adds are probably three to one in favor of the 360, especially with the plethora of M$sft's "only on" and "now $199" ads.

i think gow2 is gonna pwn r2 in both game quality and sales

I have played gow1 and r1 alot, and I think gow is the better game by far, tbh i only played r1 cause it was the first online shooter on the ps3, and from what I've seen from the r2 beta, I seriously doubt I'll buy r2:(

He's just stating his opinion. As good as resistance may be, a lot of 360 fans like gears compared to PS3 owners going for resistance. I think they are two completely different games so there shouldn't even be a comparison.

Can someone explain the fascination with Gears of War to me? The game is way overrated! First of all, it was like 10 hours long. The story and the voice acting were ridiculous. And the graphics were sharp, but there was like 4 colors tops in the players and environments. I am sorry, but I just dont get it.

GoW had a great, gritty, intensity to it that I have rarely received from other games. The blood spatter, the slowly buiding tension, the great mix of desperate attacks and even more desperate retreats.

Yeah the palette wasn't the greatest, but it did give you a feel that you were on another world, albeit a human one.

The cover system was quite frankly the best I had ever used to date. It felt natural, worked well, and I could easily disengage if something came up from behind.

But really, it all comes down to three words: Freakin Chainsaw Gun.

IMHO, people tend to look like they are desperately trying to find something wrong with the game when they say the color palette is a bit lacking. Yeah its somewhat true, but some dock points on titles just because of this factor.

The game is simply a fun title, one that most ps3 owners (myself included) wouldn't mind having the the ps3.

Well from early reviews, it seems like Gears of War 2 will beat out Resistance once again. It's received multiple 100's while Resistance has received mid to low 90's.

And I've read more than a few reviews that say Gears 2's graphics are the best of any game out there. I haven't seen it in person, but from screenshots, it seems to be true.

Kinda sad, where does that leave the PS3's awesome power?

I enjoyed the Resistance ad more than the Gears ad. The old Gears 1 ad was the best, with I believe "Crazy World" playing softly in the background while the Gears character realizes he's not alone.

IMO gears will win. I've seen gameplay vids of both games and I have to say R2 just simply is a no for me. Standing there with a gatlin gun and having a boss just take the shot is just simply boring, at least in gears 2 the bosses are much more complicated. thats just my personal opinion that Gears2 will win R2 won't. LBP will get game of the year i know it will

I don't like comparing these 2 great games, since the only things the have in common is guns and aliens and aren't in the same genre.

Gears 2 "should" sell more with the larger install base it has. But will have have to look at the attach rate compared to how many consoles are owned to really have a good view on all of this.

Neither game will get game of the year though

i just checked it, the actual articles on metacritic, R2 has a 89, Gears a 95. when i checked it at the time of my last statement, it was 92 95.

scores dont really mean sh*t though to be frank, as im sure there will be some 80's coming for gears soon enough, simply because you cant make everybody happy

One of the main reasons it will sell more than R2 is the fact that there is only a handful of exclusive must have games coming coming out for the 360 this month or that have hit recently,Fable 2 and Gears 2. Of course Gears 2 will sell huge

but...

LBP > Gears2 > Resistance2

Gears2 will be the best selling game during the holidays. Resistance2 will sell very good also but not as good as Gears2. I hope LBP does well saleswise to ensure future LBP titles. LBP is not getting the attention it deserves!

I like Gears1, and most likely will get Gears2, but to give you an idea of how fanboyish these folks here are who speak of Gears1 like it is the best game ever, just go to ign, and check out the reader reviews. To even the average Xbox gamer, it's a good game, not great...In fact a larger number of reviews simply talk about how overrated the game is. And as for myself, I waited along time to play that game, and when I did. I wasn't impressed. Some reviewers gave it a 10 for graphics which was bs. They were cool, but animation was clunky, bosses were vegtables, and the controls were clunky: comparable to a forgotten game, Dark Sector, which mind had better controls.

gears 2 will sell much more than R2... its simple, the ps3 has 4 or 5 huge games to get this yr, most ppl ( not the hardcore gamers who will get more ) will only get 1 or 2, this might be LBP, might be socom, might be R2, with the 360, theyve only got gears 2 this yr, so everyone who is anyone will be buying gears 2 this holidays, just like they did with halo, its the only game worth having this holidays if uve only got a 360, therefore it will sell millions.

Even though i hate to admit it cause i do have a soft spot for XBOX 360 you are right. When you look at it Microsoft every year puts all there eggs into one basket 2 years ago it was Gears of War, Last year it was Halo, this year its Gears of War 2, and next year it will be Halo: Recon (They r jus milking it now officially like FF7) In truth many of there consumers has also relized this, and when i asked many to name exclusive games for the 360 thats not Halo or Gears they where quiet and said they have also been looking into a PS3 FOR THE MANYY EXCLUSIVES. Eventualy PS3 will outclass 360 fully In games (It already has) and sales(within the next 2 years)

I guess Fable 2 is also big for them though.

In all fairness we only have LBP and R2.

Socom is so-so, especially since it doesn't have a single player campaign, and Motorstorm, while fun, isn't any bigger than Pure.

I guess I answered my own question. Still a good point though.

@Joe_III - I agree with most of your comments, the intesity and grit were definitely there, the problem is there should have been much more of it and a better story to go with it. And the chainsaw gun was awesome, but still all in all the whole experience was way overrated for my tastes.

You know, most games are overrated. I personally haven't given a game a rating higher than 9.3 since Halo. A few games have come close (CoD2 360/PC, GoW, ROFM), but it seems like most reviewers are willing to gloss over too many problems for advertisers money.

Gears was nowhere near perfect. Neither was ROFM. I liked both alot, but I would hesitate to compare them. R2 looks like it'll sweep the floor with other FPS games coming out, just like GoW2 will kill any TPS games (are there any?) coming.

If you want to pitch out str8 numbers, GoW looks to sell better because of a higher market share of consoles and a better software attach rate.

However, you can't forget the frat boy/12yo racist factor. They have to be tired of CoD4 by now and they'll be able to scream out obscenities online to a much larger base in R2 rather than GoW (up to 60 ppl!), so they might pick that up first and foremost.

Now if you want to compare R2 to something, compare it to L4D coming out a couple weeks after. They're both FPS games. R2 has a huge number of pre-orders, and L4D has more right now than Orange Box did. They're both AAA titles, one from Insomniac, and one from Valve.

That's an interesting matchup, despite the 2 week release date difference. But you won't want my opinion on that either ;-D

My friend returned 10 xbox games yesterday so he could get Fallout 3 and Fable 2.Gears was one of them.He says he prefers Resistance over Gears.I agree.He says hes gonna get gears 2.im getting R2 so were covered!As for overall id say Gears will sell more.There seems to be absolutely no advertising for it at all in Ireland!!but thats already been stated.

as for ads in the UK, well whenever i see a game now, from GTAIV in april to dead space or far cry 2 or any other ad, they all end with:
"jump in" of the wonderful(?) Xbox360. now i am no fanboy, but where the heck are all the ps3 ads. i've never seen one.

I think to some extent both Gears and Res. were just a taste of things to come. Gears felt like a fling thing. Online got boring. The potential was there and should be better.

Res. was not as sophisticated as Gears but was addicting!

If both have improved their weakness it should be Friggin awesome!

Seriously guys, this is a no-brainer. Maybe GeoW 2 will sell more, but in terms of what they both offer... R2 will dominate, with my name in it of course cuz' im so good ;)

Gears is obviously going to sell more, and in my own opinion and experience I'm probably gonna say that online is going to be more fun too. Although Resistance is def. going to win it in the single player.

Since I've always been more about single player, Resistance is my pic :).

I am not overly fussed about R2. I play FPSs, but did not enjoy R1. The campaign seemed a bit stagnant. Not enough enemies, too much walking around. So am gonna wait for a mate to get it, so I can see what it's like firsthand.

Well now I'm worried. Reviews are a bit lower than I expected. Not like it matters or anything, I'm still psyched to get it tomorrow, but it seems the story is lacking and the controls are clunky (or something). I hope these are fanboy reviews but I guess it could be expected seeing that we know absolutely nothing about the story lol.

I just don't understand how a game with a 60 player online competitive mode, an 8 player coop, MAJOR improvements from the first, and two stories can get anywhere near an 80. Whatever. I gotta stop reading reviews.

Dunno bout you but a game averaging a 90 from multiple reviews is still a win in my book. R2 was not even on my radar, but after seeing the reviews...I plan on picking it up. From Fable2, Fallout3, Gears2, Resistance2, and LBP the 360 and PS3 this holiday season are really showing what true HD gaming is all about. The Wii on the other hand... no comment.

Idk, I think GoW will sell more copies in the first few months but will peter off quickly. R2 with fantastic online (the beta ruled!) will, in time, over take GoW in units sold.

Don't bring up the Wii ! I'm still angry about that. Should have bought 6 more ps3 games instead.

Forget sells because we can only buy 1 copy of the game. We all know Gears2 will outsell Resistance 2. And we all know why, more xboxs in households (after Gears 2 about another 20% of them will Red Ring) and only 2 exclusive must-buys for the xbox (fable and gears).

But what I and the rest of y'all should care about is one thing....GAME QUALITY.

I STRONGLY believe R2 will pwn all the shooters out there in terms of overall game QUALITY. Insomniac is all about giving you quality (2 storylines in the single and 8 player co-op, and 60 user multiplayer). That's all they make. They are that talented. R&C and Resistance1 is proof enuff. Epic just gives you a quick fix that will get old in about 2 to 6 weeks. A FUN fix no doubt...but still quick.

Resistance 2 will pwn Gears 2 in being the better game overall. I put my Xbox on that.

To King James, I agree. Gears is very much like the ps2 game hoding the same acronymn, God of War, in that the game was more about a nicely dramatic paced story, atmospeheric, excellent art direction, and soundtrack, made around a competent, but loose, game engine. I very much liked the production values, and I'm glad to see this time around, R2 will not be falling behind in any department.

To me personally I know Gears will sell more.

That and it's more appealing to me as well. Hopefully the roommate gets it so I can play it. I'd rather spend my money on Valkyria Chronicles and I still have HOURS left to play in Fallout 3. I'm in no rush to get R2.

I was burned out of FPSs this year I suppose.

I am so psyched about R2. I have been waiting for it ever since I beat the first resistance, which was Fu**ing Incredible even for a launch game. I liked gears too, but it could have been better. The lancer was brilliant, one of my favorite guns since the BFG9000(you know what I'm talking about.)

I think the reason did so well in the first place was all those 360 owners waiting for Halo 3 to come out. R1 didnt get all the credit it deserved because the 360 was so much more popular than the ps3. I also think gears 1 could have been longer. R1 was incredibly long compared to most next-gen shooters, and R2 is looking like it could take some time too.

Unfortunatley, no matter which game is better, I think that Gears2 will sell better and be viewed as better, for the same reason the first one was, the 360 install base. But hopefully resistance will get some more respect this time around.

I have seen more Gears ads overall, but more R2 ads on tv. The R2 ad is really weird.

Only 11 hours and 40 min until I get my hands on it.

Yea, it took me like a minute or 2 to realize what they were advertising on that commercial, especially with that Asian boy on the ground. Random.

Anyways, Adam Sessler on X-Play always says how Resistance is a extremely underrated game. I couldn't agree with that statement anymore.

Resistance 2 is going to kick serious ass trust me on that. Gears of war 2 is takes only three hours to finish shorter than the first one. I have the leaked version. Gears of War is just hype.

However, he does bring up one good point: piracy. How badly will Gears2's sales be hurt by online bootlegging?

@Fabi: Some reviewer(s) also gave MGS4 an 8/10. Others gave Halo 3 perfect scores. I've played both extensively and the end result was that my faith in the review system officially died. No neutral system would ever have allowed a phenomenon like this to happen. Play the games yourself, decide which ones you like better.

Halo 3 should not have gotten a perfect score. I would have given it a 9.1 tops. Halo 2 was even more overrated tho.

I would probably have given MGS4 around a 9.1 too. But then again, reviews are subjective, not objective. Objectivity in markets where there are different genres for different tastes are impossible. Ideally a site/mag should have a seperate main reviewer for each genre.
