PS3 Sales Surge By 900% In Japan
Last week, the numbers were bleak. According to the Media Create weekly sales statistics, only 3,931 PlayStation 3 units were sold in Japan, placing it firmly in the basement.
But with the release of Grand Theft Auto IV and LittleBigPlanet in late October and the impending launch of Resistance 2 on November 13 in the Land of the Rising Sun, PS3 sales have leaped over 900%- this week, Sony sold 39,587 PS3s, which is more than the Xbox 360 and Wii combined, although the handhelds continue to dominate the hardware sales charts. Oddly enough, some might not think games like GTAIV and R2 could spur such a huge sales spike in Japan; those two games don't typically fit into the Japanese tradition. But as we've said numerous times before, Japanese gamers are starting to adopt more of the Western gaming preferences as time goes on, and the numbers reflect that shift. Here are the Media Create weekly hardware stats, courtesy of PS3Fanboy:
- DSi -- 171,925
- PSP -- 50,358
- PS3 -- 39,587
- Wii -- 23,123
- DS Lite -- 16,369
- PS2 -- 6,714
- Xbox 360 -- 6,119
The PS3 version of GTAIV easily tops the software list at 132,676 copies sold with LittleBigPlanet sliding in at #3 with 51,705, and because there are so few 360s in Japan, GTAIV can be considered to be a legitimate PS3 system seller. Only 33,648 copies of the 360 version were sold...but that must mean everyone with a 360 in Japan must've bought it.
