Testers Issue Killzone 2 Beta Feedback

With the Killzone 2 open beta in full swing - in Europe, at least - more and more people are beginning to offer new details and information gleaned from their experience with the test. So far, a lot of it is interesting and all of it seems to be overwhelmingly positive.

Firstly, what we're hearing from testers is that Killzone 2 offers a sense of "heavy realism," of sorts. In other words, rather than just kinda floating around the screen with this disembodied hand holding a gun, you actually feel like a futuristic soldier clad in extraordinarily heavy armor. This doesn't mean you won't be clumping around like a mech, though; the controls and overall gameplay mechanic reportedly work extremely well. Another interesting little tidbit popped up today, which talks about the role of the Sixaxis motion controls when attempting to snipe. See, sniping requires a steady hand, so if you can't manage to keep the controller perfectly still, your scope will be shifting about. We assume you can turn off the motion sensing, though, in case you don't like this idea. Lastly, everyone continues to comment on just how pretty and atmospheric the game is; the backdrops and combat effects are apparently second-to-none, which ought to make the graphic hounds happy.

All in all, Killzone 2 is shaping up quite nicely, and if we ever land a spot in the beta, we'll bring you our impressions as well. We don't particularly like to rely on second-hand information for such a huge title, but it's okay for now. For now, Guerilla. We want in!

I got in the beta on Wednesday. I can't really say much about it but I will say that I am extremely, and I stress extremely, impressed with what I've seen so far. I had great anticipation of this game after watching the videos and I will say even the beta has lived up to it.

Ben you mentioned in a previous article how games like R2 and K2 are putting the PS3 ahead of all other consoles with regards to first person shooters. I have to agree that by the first week of K2's release all other consoles will be buried. February can't come soon enough.

It seems like all I've been reading from beta testers is positive news. I didn't expect that from K2.

There is everything positive about KZ2. However Guerilla is ensuring that the game is 100% correct

x360 died in europe and Japan. KZ2 will give it the final death blow in USA

Well, I too am in the Beta... echoing what snglbck26 stated above I am very impressed thus far. This will be a spectacular game and would expect nothing short of a 10 for this one I suspect.

As you stated in the article Ben, I have had much trouble joining heavily populated games, i.e. games that have more than 15 odd people logged in at any one time. I have had to try to log in multiple times to get onto the server... it seems the more people there are on one particular served game, the more network error codes I get. Joining a newly created game of only 1 or 2 persons is not an issue. I have also successfully created online games for people to join; and i have had people join my hosted games without a problem.

The only thing I can think of at this time is that it is a host/ping issue. The game does not describe the problem I am having if I fail to log on, it simply displays different network code errors... that is all, it then fails to sync the game and promptly disconnects me back to the main game screen :(

On the positive note; for all you hungry KillZone 2 fans... the graphics so far are very good. I can tell you there are some nice lighting and lens flaring effects as you pan across light sources... plenty of post processing going on, including full AA. Note though; it is running in 720p and not 1080p. I was expecting the latter... The rag doll effect is very well done... and there are bits of splatter and blood being emitted as you fill your enemy with metal slugs...

So far so good...

* snglbck24, what is your PSN, maybe we can hook up and have a go on KillZone 2, testing it further...

I don't know why everyone gets hung up on 1080p/720p. I personally like the idea of less graphical errors on the lower 720p resolution. Higher resolution = more resources to allocate = lag, tearing, chops etc.

If a dev needs to bring the resolution down one step to bring us a nice steady frames/sec with no tearing or aliasing then I am all for it!

agreed with you... KZ is one hell of a Beta, I would say (imo) better than R2.

We still have the R2 beta here in the UK (well, last time I looked anyway)..and without saying too much when I went back to R2 it felt light, fast and arcadey where as KZ2 was feeling very solid indeed.

Now im not saying R2 is a skatey floaty piece of rubbish, because its not, and as soon as its out here in the UK I will most probably pick it up.

What im saying is that KZ2 is an awesome FPS, damn well made, solid game that imo deserves the hype.

R2 and KZ2 are just for starters.. what the hell are we going to be playing in 2 or 3 years from now?!

I also played the R2 beta and as much as I liked it have to say Killzone is much better on-line. For those graphic hounds they are as good as MGS4. At least in my opinion.

The graphics are by far the best for FPS standards, i can't stop playing lol

My only criticism of it would be that sometimes the movement and aiming feels sluggish but apart from that it's more or less the best FPS i've played since CoD4.

yeah, the movement takes a little to get used to but i love it now. at first the controls felt wack as hell, but my friend (who has the ps3, i have a 360) looked like he had no problem with it and i thought maybe i should try it more and now it's like second nature for me with the movement.

I think the issue is that I am based out of Singapore, but I am using a US account and "trying" to connect to the US based servers. My US account was the first account I had when I purchased and activated my PS3, so I would expect no problems. As stated before, creating a match and seeing people join the match is not an issue, but joining an almost full match is... strange hey?

It seems as though most of the server problems are with the newer players getting in recently. I played with a guy from Ireland last night who has been playing for a while. That may mean he's been playing since the first phase. He told me he has never really had a hard time getting in.

I got into the Killzone 2 Beta, and I'll admit that it has good online play that seems to focus more on teamwork rather than everyone on both teams going solo. However, I've been having problems with signing on; I usually get network errors either while the game is logging me in and connecting me to a universe (the U.S. one) or once I enter a match. After trying numerous times to get to a match, I was finally able to enter one from the U.K. Have that many other people had the same network error problems as I?

I'm in Cleveland, and I'm in. Worst part is, between R2 and Midnight Club, I hardly play it. I think I've played it twice. Soon as I can't get into a game, it's like "That sucks. Might as well play something else."

But, it does look great. I'm sure I'll get into it more after I beat R2.

It's really too hard to say this early as it's only a beta. You get to play only a very small part of it. It's just a different game than COD4 and I have no idea what the single player version will be like. I'm sure it will be incredible though as I really have a sense that the developers really understand what the public wants.

I agree that COD4 set the bar high. I do truly believe that as we get further away from when COD4 released and as developers like Guerilla start to understand the workings of the PS3 games like K2 will set the bar at the next higher level. I really have a feeling that a game like COD World at War will blow most people away because developers like Treyarch are working on the success of COD4. They're also working off of it's failures, and it did have some, and improving the FPS experience.

It's just the beginning.

Beta is so amazingly realistic. One bit I have noticed is how when you are turning, you don't just turn on the spot like you would normally expect, instead you at first slowly turn and gradually get faster like one would in real life. Little tid-bits like that prove to make this game very spectacular. I do have slight issues with the controls though, I just wish they were more customizable (though I think they will be in the full game) and I have Major network issues. For days I could do nothing but get some #10002 Network Error Code.. Recently I got in again and got #2 Network Error Code.. But I tried again and could play for a while.

The USA beta invites went out last Wednesday. At least that's when I got mine. I believe the beta invites are closed now though I'm not 100% certain. Also I've seen some comments in the forum that it's over this Friday but I'd say at this point those are only rumors and Guerilla has not confirmed the end of it yet....that I know of.

The beta invites went out randomly to PSN members. I'd say everyone that got one felt pretty damn lucky.

I doubt there is any way to sign up for the beta, you just have to get lucky. I think they used the applicants of the LBP beta and the R2 beta, since those are the only two I've sign up for and I got an invite. If you haven't gotten a code yet then you will probably have to wait for phase 3.

I've been in the beta since last Tueday. I do have to say that i am very very impressed with the graphics and the controls for the beta. I sometimes to have an issue joining a match but it varies and depends on the time of night i am trying to play. The players are great too, i havent' come in contact with anyone that is offensive which i am so happy to see :)
I really do think the game will defently one i will be picking up next yr, and that it will sell well. Oh and i have had no lag at all during game play when respowning, basically for a beta i am super impressed :)

hey, those who still are hanging on CoD4 and getting into CoD5, well guess what? K2 BETA alone dominates BOTH games. K2 is super realistic, very realistic ... too realistic to be a game. How's that sound? physics, gameplay, shooting, blowing things up. I'll tell you one thing, I went in one stage with heavy geared players, I'm always Helghast (screw ISA!) and as soon as I came out, rocket launchers were going off at us, we tossed grenades and kept shooting down at them. My camera screen literally shakes and trumbles with whatever explosions occur, things I hit, when I jump, land, or even when I shoot, walk, jog, running as well. The sound of whatever is happening in the game will literally come to-life through your speakers. Its just too hard to describe, you HAVE to get into the BETA to see this for yourself.

I know this is bad, but check out some of the nice features in K2 --> http://www.psu.com/Impressive-Killzone-2-destructibility-footage-News--a0005331-p0.php

Killzone 2 is on a "whole nother" level in First Person Shooters. The beta is OFF DA CHAIN!!! I just don't see any other company touching Sony right now. People can argue that Sony's line-up was even w/ everybody else's (if they ignorantly disregard LBP), but Killzone 2 is that title that even the most elite fanboys can't ignore!

The beta really is amazing, I imagine one of the reasons it is doing so well is because it was supposed to come out this month, and they probably had a lot of their problems ironed out. I hope that is the case. If it is, than Guerrilla has a lot of time to polish up this game and make it better and better.
