Testers Issue Killzone 2 Beta Feedback
With the Killzone 2 open beta in full swing - in Europe, at least - more and more people are beginning to offer new details and information gleaned from their experience with the test. So far, a lot of it is interesting and all of it seems to be overwhelmingly positive.
Firstly, what we're hearing from testers is that Killzone 2 offers a sense of "heavy realism," of sorts. In other words, rather than just kinda floating around the screen with this disembodied hand holding a gun, you actually feel like a futuristic soldier clad in extraordinarily heavy armor. This doesn't mean you won't be clumping around like a mech, though; the controls and overall gameplay mechanic reportedly work extremely well. Another interesting little tidbit popped up today, which talks about the role of the Sixaxis motion controls when attempting to snipe. See, sniping requires a steady hand, so if you can't manage to keep the controller perfectly still, your scope will be shifting about. We assume you can turn off the motion sensing, though, in case you don't like this idea. Lastly, everyone continues to comment on just how pretty and atmospheric the game is; the backdrops and combat effects are apparently second-to-none, which ought to make the graphic hounds happy.
All in all, Killzone 2 is shaping up quite nicely, and if we ever land a spot in the beta, we'll bring you our impressions as well. We don't particularly like to rely on second-hand information for such a huge title, but it's okay for now. For now, Guerilla. We want in!

As you stated in the article Ben, I have had much trouble joining heavily populated games, i.e. games that have more than 15 odd people logged in at any one time. I have had to try to log in multiple times to get onto the server... it seems the more people there are on one particular served game, the more network error codes I get. Joining a newly created game of only 1 or 2 persons is not an issue. I have also successfully created online games for people to join; and i have had people join my hosted games without a problem.
The only thing I can think of at this time is that it is a host/ping issue. The game does not describe the problem I am having if I fail to log on, it simply displays different network code errors... that is all, it then fails to sync the game and promptly disconnects me back to the main game screen :(
On the positive note; for all you hungry KillZone 2 fans... the graphics so far are very good. I can tell you there are some nice lighting and lens flaring effects as you pan across light sources... plenty of post processing going on, including full AA. Note though; it is running in 720p and not 1080p. I was expecting the latter... The rag doll effect is very well done... and there are bits of splatter and blood being emitted as you fill your enemy with metal slugs...
So far so good...

If a dev needs to bring the resolution down one step to bring us a nice steady frames/sec with no tearing or aliasing then I am all for it!

We still have the R2 beta here in the UK (well, last time I looked anyway)..and without saying too much when I went back to R2 it felt light, fast and arcadey where as KZ2 was feeling very solid indeed.
Now im not saying R2 is a skatey floaty piece of rubbish, because its not, and as soon as its out here in the UK I will most probably pick it up.
What im saying is that KZ2 is an awesome FPS, damn well made, solid game that imo deserves the hype.
R2 and KZ2 are just for starters.. what the hell are we going to be playing in 2 or 3 years from now?!

I agree that COD4 set the bar high. I do truly believe that as we get further away from when COD4 released and as developers like Guerilla start to understand the workings of the PS3 games like K2 will set the bar at the next higher level. I really have a feeling that a game like COD World at War will blow most people away because developers like Treyarch are working on the success of COD4. They're also working off of it's failures, and it did have some, and improving the FPS experience.
It's just the beginning.

The beta invites went out randomly to PSN members. I'd say everyone that got one felt pretty damn lucky.

Ben you mentioned in a previous article how games like R2 and K2 are putting the PS3 ahead of all other consoles with regards to first person shooters. I have to agree that by the first week of K2's release all other consoles will be buried. February can't come soon enough.
